The “Animals in War” monument in Confederation Park, Ottawa, honors the essential role animals have played during times of conflict, providing support, companionship, and bravery alongside human soldiers. Today, animals, particularly PTSD service dogs, continue to play a significant role in supporting veterans and trauma-exposed professionals, offering comfort and aiding in the recovery of those facing mental health challenges. As we remember and express gratitude for the dedication of those who serve, it’s fitting to also recognize the invaluable contributions that animals make to their lives and well-being.

“Feel-good Friday photos” 💖
This adorable boy, Archie - recovering in style following a spinal surgery. We love our little red wagon for some of our post op patients. It allows us to take them outside for some fresh air - which is great for our team members as well! Even within the clinic, it’s easy to transport these little ones to be close to someone while they are typing up medical records, etc. TLC is as important as the more scientific therapies we use during post op recovery!

Feel-good Friday photos! 💖 Too cute for words!

These adorable 11-week-old Khao Manee kittens had Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) hearing tests with us today. Some breeds of dogs and cats have a genetic predisposition to deafness, and we applaud responsible breeders who test for these conditions.

The BAER test takes 10-15 minutes, assessing each ear individually. It can be performed on furry babies over 8 weeks old.

Electrodes placed just under the skin are connected to a computer, which sends clicks into each ear. The electrodes detect activity in the hearing pathways, producing waveforms similar to an EKG. Peaks indicate hearing activity, while flat waveforms show deafness.

Thank you to VSCAN Neurologist, Dr. Philip Jull for leading medical team members in another successful Bootcamp session. No push-ups, or forced marches - the goal is to connect in person with the veterinarians in our community to make collaborating on cases even smoother. He takes participants through his thought processes for diagnosing Neuro issues and discusses how they can connect with he and our other Neuro doctors.
We have such an amazing group of primary care and specialty and emergency practices in the city and surrounding area. It’s a pleasure for us to provide specialized services in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, and Advanced Imaging to them and their clients and patients.

Thank you to Dr. Colleen Wilson, Veterinary Behaviour Specialist, for her excellent talk last week. The subject was Dog Aggression - one of the top reasons that people relinquish their pets. She covered so much helpful information to a literally packed house. 50 doctors and veterinary team members were totally engaged in what Colleen had to say.
A key take-away is that there are so many approaches to consider when vet teams and veterinary behaviour specialists work together with pet families to address these problems.

“Feel-good Friday photos 💖” Thanks to Jane and Jessie Thornton for an amazing experience. VSCAN team members toured the incredible Canadian Guide Dogs facility. It was eye-opening and inspiring. These amazing woman and their dedicated team of trainers are passionate about what they do. From their breeding program, puppy raising families, fund raising, dog training and finally guide dog users graduating with their dogs, literally thousands and thousands of hours go into making that moment happen.
Dogs spend their lives in training - first with puppy raising families where they learn basic “good dog behaviour” and socialization skills. Then on to the Guide Dog facility where the professionals take over and provide the specific training needed to be a working dog. We saw non-stop tail wagging while observing the training process - lots of time for play as well!
Guide dog users live at the facility for a full three weeks (more like a 5-star hotel) participating in a rigorous program designed to have a successful partnership between them and their canine helpers - forming that bond is the key element.
As Jane said “the dogs are amazing, but they’re not magic” so it does take a lot of hard work on everyone’s part!
Trainers Caroline and Nadja took us through our paces with soon-to-be graduates Watson and Peta. We each had the chance to do a brief blindfolded walk with the dogs guiding. That experience gave us even more appreciation for how special the dogs and the people working with them are.
Thank you to the whole team for an unforgettable afternoon.

His grateful family truly knows the way to VSCAN team members' hearts - a handsome canine boy and a box of treats!
