A test run of poppies in the soil blocks. It's too early for poppies, but I have a ton of seeds. Peppers and eggplants are just starting to come up now, but I think they will be trickier as some are popping right out of their cubes! I am getting the hang of watering/moisture needs, bottom watering with a short dunk is working best so far, and no sign of surface mold or damping off. So far, so good for the soil block switch!🙌

I lost my stash of sweet potatoes saved for slipping this year. Long story short, I stored them improperly because I forgot about them. Throwback to this giant sweet potato I grew in 2017. It is from a breeding project and I am not sure of the variety. Luckily, has been carrying on with the sweet potato project and has slips and potatoes for slipping available and I am excited to be adding 6 new-to-me-varieties this year. Pepper seed germination tests🌶
I find the easiest way to start seeds like peppers and eggplants is by placing them in a damp paper towel or coffee filter and then into a plastic baggie. The heat, moisture, and controlled conditions inside the baggie (versus starting in soil) help them germinate in a few days instead of up to 21 days. It is also handy to do if you want to test germination rate of older seed!

I am finding so many flower pics on my old phone, and apparently I have a thing for zinnias. When I started growing, it was strictly vegetables, sunflowers and marigolds. I did not see the point of flowers taking up garden space. Over the years I learned about the importance of pollination and acquired bees so I started adding medicinal flowers and herbs. Last year there were LOTS of flowers. This year? I am hoping to add some small bouquets to the mix of vegetable offerings and am adding some gorgeous poppy and cosmos varieties to the gardens.
