Here is the update everyone has been waiting for!

Lily, the now 15 week old Labrador Retriever, has been coming to see us weekly for splint changes over the last 4 weeks.

Today, radiographs confirmed that her fractured leg has healed nicely, see the attached photo of the before and after.

As you can tell Lily is very excited to go back to running around like the crazy puppy that she is.

To our valued clients,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement from veterinary practice, on June 1, after 25 years at Queensway West Animal Hospital. Serving you and your beloved furry companions has been the highlight of my career, and it is with a profound sense of gratitude that I reflect on the journey we have shared.

I want to express my deepest appreciation for your loyalty and trust throughout the years. Your confidence in our clinic and the care we provide has been the driving force behind our success, and I am truly humbled by the relationships we have built together.

It has been an honour to be a part of your pets' lives, witnessing their joys, triumphs, and even their challenges. I consider myself fortunate to have cultivated strong bonds with my clients throughout my career and these are memories that will stay with me forever.

While I may be stepping away from active practice, I leave you in the capable hands of our dedicated team of veterinarians and staff members, people who I have the highest respect for and who share the same passion and commitment to providing exceptional care to your cherished companions. They will continue to uphold the high standards of service and compassion that you have come to expect from us.

Please know that I will carry the memories of our time together always. Your trust and support have meant the world to me, and I am deeply grateful to have had the privilege of serving you.

As I move into this next chapter of my life, I do so with immense gratitude and a profound sense of fulfillment. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me to be a part of your pet's lives.

Wishing you and your furry family members continued health, happiness, and countless cherished moments together.

With warmest regards,

Steven Duns, DVM

Yesterday our team had the pleasure of meeting Lily, a very sweet 11 week old Labrador Retriever. She came to us because she fell off her owners bed and was not putting weight on her left hind leg. X-rays confirmed a fractured leg.

Lily was so comfortable while getting her cast placed by Dr. Morrison that she fell sleep in the arms of our technician. We are expecting a speedy recovery for little Lily over the next several weeks.

With the colder weather upon us, our team is excited to get our 4th Annual Winter Coat Exchange up and running again. We begin with asking for donations of pet winter coats, sweaters, boots, etc. that you may have stored away and no longer use. Almost every donation from our exchange last year found a new home and we are so grateful!

Winter clothing can be dropped off outside our hospital at the below location whenever is convenient for you!

We would Iike you to meet Miss Dolly. This sweet girl was found as a stray and brought to us by a client needing some care and attention. As they were unable to keep her and the Ottawa Humane Society has recently taken in a large number of cats, we decided to house Dolly at the clinic while we sorted her out. She has been spayed (last week), dewormed and will be vaccinated.

She is currently hanging out in our office, stealing the chair of whomever got up last, roaming around the desks and begging for attention (she’s actually been pretty good about not sitting on keyboards too often, through she does traipse across them sometimes when she feels the need). This sweet girl LOVES attention, in whatever form. She is looking for a loving home where the attention can be around the clock!

She gets along well with Ginny (Dr Morrison’s dog who many have met), but has hissed at other cats- pretty much like all cats do.

If you think you can give this sweet girl a second chance at being number one in your life- please contact us! Email is probably the best way to make your case, then we can for sure arrange a meet and greet.

Our “wildlife season” with Holly's Haven Wildlife Rescue (https://www.hhwr.ca/) is well under way and here are some fun posts to let you know what we've been up to.

We kicked off the season early in April with Margaret Anne, the beaver! We believe Margaret Anne was run over (getting her foot caught) by a car, and ended up with a dislocated hip. After an attempt to put the hip back in place was unsuccessful (under heavy sedation of course), we decided the best course of action for Margaret Anne was surgery. On April 24, she underwent a surgery called a femoral head excision. This is a surgery commonly done on cats and small dogs for fractures at or near the hip or hip dislocations that can’t be put back. It sounds kind of extreme, but the ball joint at the top of the femur (thigh bone) is removed, so there is essentially no hip joint left. In smaller animals, there is enough muscle tissue the joint to hold things together and the leg actually functions quite well, and most importantly, without pain. We were very fortunate to have Dr Mary Thompson from the Ottawa Humane Society donate her time and skills for Margaret Anne’s surgery and she did great! Margaret Anne was up and eating hours after surgery, was restricted to only a very shallow pool for 2 weeks, then allowed to climbs and swim more after her incision had healed. When we determined this feisty girl was more than capable of making it on her own back in the wild a mere 6 weeks after surgery, she went back to an area near where she was first found.

What a treat to work with one of Canada’s national symbols! (We are not so sure she completely appreciated us as she was a pretty feisty girl, but her release back into the wild, with a pain free leg, is all we needed for appreciation).

Have you ever wondered how Porcupines are handled for exams and radiographs?

The answer is very carefully and using multiple PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

This is 1 out of 2 young porcupines that we have seen in the clinic this week. Please keep an eye out for these critters when out walking your dogs.

Everyone At QWAH is very excited to announce that we have a new Veterinarian joining our small family. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Blanaid Donnelly.

A native of Northern Ireland, Blanaid has been living in Canada since 2002. She graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2009 and, driven by her interest in the interaction between human and animal health, went on to complete her Master’s in Public Health at the University of Guelph in 2011 and her PhD at McGill University in 2016. She returned to practice at the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital in 2016 where she has predominantly been practicing emergency medicine.
Outside of work she loves reading, cooking, traveling and spending time with her husband, daughter and their three cats Stylo, Nugget and Daisy.
Blanaid is very excited to be joining the QWAH team! She is looking forward to building lasting relationships with pets and their families in the Kanata area and to using preventive medicine to keep them out of the emergency room!

09/26/2022

Please join all of us at Queensway West Animal Hospital in extending our best wishes to Anne Davies on her retirement at the end of this month. Our hearts are heavy but we are excited for the new chapter Anne will be starting in her life.

Anne started with us back in 2000 and has been an integral, important part of our team since then. She has seen the hospital grow from a small, brand new practice to what it has become today. Anyone who has come into the clinic will have experienced Anne’s warm greeting and the personal touch she gives to our clients and patients. She has kept us running smoothly through thick and thin – even through the last couple of challenging years – with her characteristic good humour.

She will be missed, QWAH won’t be the same without her but we are all so happy that we have had the opportunity to know and work with Anne. HAPPY RETIREMENT ANNE!!

If you would like to email us a nice note about Anne to [email protected] we would be happy to pass them along to her.

We keep up with the rapidly changing nature of pet health through a commitment to continuing education for all of our staff, to ensure we provide our clients with the most up-to-date techniques and knowledge. There is a lot of information regarding pet care available from a variety of sources these days; we are always ready and willing to guide you through this information to sort the relevant from the irrelevant.
