Let’s Review: Cherry Eye 🍒👀

Have you seen 🍒👀’s before? Cherry eye is a common term used to describe a prolapse of the third eyelid gland.

The third eyelid contains a special gland that produces some of the eye’s protective tear film, and when it prolapses or “pops out” the condition is known as cherry eye🍒👀, as it appears as an inflamed and swollen mass on the lower eyelid that kinda looks like a ‘cherry’.

Treatment involves surgical replacement of the third eyelid gland as soon as possible in order to minimize permanent damage to the third eyelid gland. This is critical because the third eyelid gland produces up to fifty percent of the watery portion of tear film and if comprised without adequate tear production, your dog is much more likely to develop dry eye syndrome, and or a corneal ulcer as a result of irritation.

If you suspect your pet has a cherry eye issue, please consider making an appointment with your Veterinary team to come up with a therapy plan for your pet!

📣🗓️MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!🗓️📣
It’s that time of year again! We are excited to announce that we will be offering Snap4DX Clinics at our facility again this year!🙌🏼

Pets must be a current client of Carleton Veterinary Services and have been seen by one of our Veterinarian’s within the last year.

What is a Snap4DX test?
👉🏻 An all in one blood test that screens for Heartworm, Lyme Disease, Ehrilicia, and Anaplasmosis.

Why do we host these clinics?
👉🏻 Symptoms of Heartworm, Lyme, and other tick borne diseases don’t appear until the infection has already set in. It is our policy to test every year in order to provide you with the proper preventative medication, to keep your pets healthy and safe.

Clinic Dates & Times:
🗓️: Saturday, April 13th from 10:00am - 2:00pm at Carleton Veterinary Services!

🗓️: Saturday, May 24th from 10:00am - 2:00pm at Carleton Veterinary Services!

Upon arrival please follow the steps displayed in the “Patient Exclusive Snap4DX Clinic” graphic!🐾

The clinic will be curbside, first come first serve. Please remember this is always a very busy clinic day. We ask that you please be patient with us as we will be trying our very best to get your pet inside as soon as possible.

Test results will be sent out later in the day or the following Monday. You may also pick up your preventative medication on this day.

Please reach out to our team if you have any questions!👩‍⚕️📞

Tick Tuesday: Species Edition!🩺

Did you know that there are several different tick species in Ontario? They come in various sizes and are especially active in our area!📍

4 species of ticks most commonly encountered by our pets and families are the American Dog Tick and the Blacklegged Deer Tick (both of which transmit Lyme disease), the Lonestar Tick and the Brown Dog Tick (these do not transmit Lyme disease but do transmit other tick borne diseases). An additional tick species making its sway into our area is the Asian Longhorned Tick. Asian Longhorned Ticks do not transmit Lyme disease, though they do transmit other tick-borne diseases.🦠

Make sure your pet has their parasite prevention on board to stay protected from these pesky parasites! Contact our friendly and knowledgeable team for more parasite prevention information, or to stock up for the season!🥼

Senior pets bring so much love and wisdom into our lives, and it’s important to ensure their golden years are filled with comfort and care.

Here are some Senior Pet Health Tips!⬇️

🩺 Regular Vet Check-Ups: Just like us, pets need more check-ups as they age. Keep an eye out for any changes in behavior or mobility, and schedule an appointment with our team!

🥗 Tailored Diet: Senior pets often require special diets to support their changing nutritional needs. Consult your our team to find the right plan for their lifestyle.

🚶‍♂️Gentle Exercise: Encourage gentle exercise to keep their joints limber and their minds active. Short walks and interactive play are perfect!

🦷 Oral Health: Dental issues can be very painful - don’t forget about their pearly whites! Regular dental check-ups are important as oral health is crucial to optimal organ function.

💤 Comfortable Space: Create a cozy and comfortable environment at home. Soft/orthopedic bedding, ramps, and non-slip surfaces can make their lives easier.

💕 Emotional Well-being: Senior pets thrive on love and attention. Maintain routines and offer reassurance to reduce anxiety.
