Happy Easter! As you celebrate, please remember rabbits and baby chickens do not make good Easter gifts. These animals require proper shelter, food, and medical care from a trained veterinary professional.

: https://ow.ly/7OzO50R4cCO

Colder weather and higher risk? Tick-borne diseases are spreading in Canada…and our cold winters aren’t helping!

New Canadian research shows that when a Blacklegged tick is infected with the Lyme disease bacteria it may be more likely to be active on mild days during the colder months AND more likely to survive cold weather compared to uninfected ticks!

Did you know…. About 1 in 5 of Blacklegged ticks you encounter in Canada could be carrying the bacteria that causes Lyme disease! This number can be even higher in known risk areas!

It is important to protect your pet and yourself, even when you might think it’s “too cold for ticks”! Discuss the best tick control options with your veterinarian and visit ticktalkcanada.com to learn more about the risks in your province.

***

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (represented by our CEO, Joel Neuheimer, President, Dr. Trevor Lawson, and Manager, Communications and Public Relations, Lori Ahronson) was on Parliament Hill today to call on the federal government to address workplace shortages and support a robust veterinary workforce through additional investments for programs, projects, and veterinary infrastructure as well as investing in the mental health of all veterinary professionals and paraprofessionals.

This shortage has significant implications for animal health and welfare, public health, the Canadian economy, communities across Canada, as well as the well-being of individual veterinary professionals and paraprofessionals.

Did you know…. Blacklegged ticks (the ones that can transmit the Lyme disease bacteria) can survive freezing temperatures? One way is that they create their own “anti-freeze” that helps them tolerate the cold!

However, a new study showed that when they are infected with certain bacteria, like the one that causes Lyme disease, they may be even BETTER at surviving our cold winters! Call your veterinarian to discuss the best tick control options for your pet.

***

Did you know… That instead of making them weaker, infection with tick-borne pathogens (like the one that causes Lyme disease) can make ticks stronger!? That’s surprising!

During Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, the CVMA would like to remind all farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural workers of the importance of farm safety — today and every day.

Hazards, both physical and mental, exist in every workplace, and your farm is no exception. Make safety a priority on your farm to protect your animals as well as yourself, your employees, and family.

03/07/2024

Inflation and price increases have been seen across many Canadian businesses throughout the past few years, and the veterinary medicine profession is, unfortunately, no exception.

Costs associated with veterinary care help ensure animal owners have access to high levels of care they expect for their animals; provides training and ensures the well-being of veterinary teams; and safeguards sustainability of businesses to provide veterinary services in the long term.

However, animal owners can also take steps to help mitigate the effects of rising costs of care. These steps include purchasing pet insurance, practicing preventative care, budgeting for upcoming veterinary care needs, and taking advantage of payment plans.

Learn more about the cost of veterinary healthcare here: https://ow.ly/lmJn50QNzk0

***
