Two full days of meetings at Parliament Hill began today with a news conference at the Parliamentary Press Gallery. CVMA President, Dr. Tracy Fisher and Past President, Dr. Jean Gauvin represented veterinarians, asking federal and provincial governments to address three critical challenges threatening animal health, food security, and the well-being of veterinary professionals:

- Severe shortages of essential veterinary medications
- A widening workforce gap among veterinarians and veterinary technicians
- Escalating mental health pressures within the profession

It’s World Antimicrobial Awareness Week! Here are a few crucial reminders for animal owners:

- Administer your animal’s antibiotics as prescribed to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics
- Bacteria can develop a resistance to antibiotics if the complete course of prescribed medications are not taken
- Leftover antibiotics should never be flushed down the toilet, as this can have an adverse effect on amphibians, aquatic species, and the birds and mammals that prey on them

Remember, a healthy lifestyle includes regular veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention, exercise, and good nutrition.

C’est la semaine mondiale pour un bon usage des antimicrobiens! Voici quelques rappels importants pour les propriétaires d’animaux :

- Administrez les antibiotiques à votre animal en suivant rigoureusement les recommandations de votre vétérinaire pour préserver l’efficacité de ces médicaments.
- Les bactéries peuvent devenir résistantes aux antibiotiques si le traitement est arrêté plus tôt que prévu.
- Les antibiotiques ne doivent jamais être jetés dans la toilette, car ils peuvent avoir un effet néfaste sur les amphibiens et les espèces aquatiques, ainsi que sur les oiseaux et les mammifères qui s’en nourrissent.

N’oubliez pas qu’un mode de vie sain comprend des examens vétérinaires réguliers, la vaccination, la protection contre les parasites, l’exercice et une bonne alimentation.

Happy Halloween! As we get in the spirit of the holiday, let’s stay cautious and make today as safe as possible for our pets. Here are some tips from the CVMA:

- Keep pets away from candy and chocolate
- While they may look cute, avoid forcing them to wear costumes if they resist
- Pets who are scared, protective, or are at risk of fleeing through an open door should be kept in a crate or in room with a closed door

Joyeuse Halloween! C’est une journée festive, mais restez prudents et faites en sorte qu’elle soit la plus sécuritaire possible pour vos animaux de compagnie. Voici quelques conseils de l’ACMV :

- Rangez les bonbons et le chocolat hors de la portée des animaux.
- Ne forcez pas vos animaux à porter un costume contre leur gré, même s’ils sont très mignons!
- Gardez les animaux qui sont craintifs, protecteurs ou à risque de fuguer par la porte ouverte dans une cage ou une autre pièce.

This enhanced collaboration will extend access to Togetherall’s anonymous, clinically moderated, 24/7 mental health platform to thousands of professionals working across the veterinary field in Canada, including veterinarians, veterinary technologists and technicians, students, and all veterinary support staff.
