Motivation Monday….. just a reminder!

Don’t forget your why.

We unconditionally commit ourselves to this sport. We sacrifice enormous parts of our lives, and ourselves because we are so passionate about what we love.

But whilst we work, grind and graft to become the best riders and owners we believe our horses deserve, we sometimes forget the most important thing...we forget why.

Why we get up at 3am for a competitions, why we forgo new clothes so our horses can have special shoes, why we get up 2 hours earlier than “normal people” because stables don’t clean themselves, why we invest our hard earned money in saddles, entry fees, supplements and rugs.

We do it because once upon a time, a little kid fell in love with a horse and never looked back.

We do it because these animals bring us incomparable happiness.

They lift us up from the darkest of places and they give us a reason to get out of bed.

They push us, challenge us and shape us into better people by teaching us lessons we’d never learn anywhere else.

They unlock a whole part of us that we never knew existed. A stubborn, determined, strong willed part that refuses to give up.

They keep us grounded, reminding us that sometimes even though certain things may be out of our control, our own actions and emotions never are.

They make us laugh, when we don’t even feel like smiling. They are like warm soup for the soul, they fill our hearts without even trying.

So next time your in the saddle, just take a moment. Breathe, smile, laugh... and don’t forget why.

Throughness and how to get it with Steffen Peters…
“Don’t let him trick you into too much contact. He is allowed to go into your hand, but not an ounce more. Never cover up in training, never one stride with too much in your hand. One ounce too much will build up too much tension; shorten the frame creating the reason to let go of the rein. Don’t accept that when you engage him, he becomes more rigid – bend him in, bend him out, test if the suppleness can match the engagement. Make him looser when you collect him. When I collect, can I keep him supple? If you don’t test him, he’ll test you. Expose him to a touch more suppleness in extension and collection – a little more throughness. If you don’t ask for throughness you won’t get it.”

“I know, I know---”

I don’t know anyone who hasn’t said this. It happens daily in all sorts of situations.

Years ago, I was watching a dressage clinic, and the clinician made some comment to one of the riders, something typical like “look up,” or “shorten your reins,” whatever, and the rider replied, “I know, I know---”

There was some guy sitting next to me, and he muttered something in a foreign language. I asked, “What’s that?”

“Oh---Just quoting a Chinese proverb---‘To know and not to do is to not truly know.”

On ne renonce jamais aux chevaux vous savez, ça fait dix mille ans que les humains tentent de dresser les chevaux. Chaque humain recommence avec chaque cheval, le même travail, la même aventure, difficile et périlleuse. Dix mille ans qu'on tombe, dix mille ans qu'on se relève, qu'on invente les voitures, qu'on invente les avions, et pourtant on continue à monter à cheval...
