With the warmer weather in December, we strongly recommend picking up an extra dose of your beloved pet's flea and tick medication! 🐾

Ticks can carry diseases such as Anaplasma, Ehrlichia and Lyme disease.

Beware of Bifenthrin! πŸͺ² Here's what you should know:

Bifenthrin is a common insecticide used professionally and privately to reduce the insect population in the area in which it is spread. Bifenthrin can be found in many different forms, including granules, sprays, and aerosols. This insecticide is often seen in fire ant baits and can be purchased at most hardware or lawn and garden stores. Dogs are very sensitive to bifenthrin and can develop vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness or difficulty walking, tremors, and seizures. Always be mindful of what is being sprayed in or around your yard and keep all lawn and garden supplies secured from your pet. If your pet is demonstrating signs consistent with a bifenthrin exposure or you suspect an exposure has occurred, contact Pet Poison Helpline and seek immediate veterinary care.

Something to keep in mind when doing your gardens this spring 🌱

The temperature is warming and many people are back outside working on gardens or landscaping. During this time, slugs and snails are common to re-emerge. Many people try to exterminate these pests by using chemicals. While this may be effective, it can be very dangerous to pets. Read more in our new blog post linked here: πŸ‘‡

Easter and Mother's Day are two of the most dangerous holidays for cats for one reason: lily poisoning. πŸ’

As a part of our No Lilies for Kitties educational campaign, we're kicking off the series by sharing which species of lilies are toxic to cats. True lilies (Lilium species) and daylilies (Hemerocallis species) are extremely toxic to cats and can potentially cause severe kidney failure. Check out the graphic below for examples, and visit the link below to learn more:

Tick Newsletter, 2024

Well, I don’t think we have ever sent out a tick newsletter so early in the year but here we are! People are disappointed the canal has not been open for Winterlude and veterinarians are frustrated by the temperatures allowing ticks to spread their awful diseases almost year-round!

I was quite disappointed to see a friend’s picture of a tick in her arm the first week of February. That means our pets could be infected as well. We have had very tiny dogs (Yorkies and Chihuahuas) coming in with active Lyme, so painful they are having trouble walking. Last year we had a shocking number of cases of exposure to the disease Anaplasmosis in dogs with no travel history. This disease can rob animals of their platelets, causing bruising and spontaneous bleeding. The key to helping our pets avoid these diseases is keeping the ticks off and killing them if they do attach.

The products we carry and want to help you with can be a little complicated, so here is a brief summary:

K9 Advantix – a topical that kills the ticks before they attach and helps with mosquitoes and black flies, does not expire.

Nexgard – an oral control, kills the ticks and fleas after they bite, no heartworm test required.

Nexgard Spectra – an oral control, kills the ticks and fleas after they bite and provides protection from heartworm and intestinal parasites – requires an annual or every other year test for heartworm for us to dispense.

Nexgard Combo - a topical solution for cats, working on ticks, fleas, many other parasites, including tapeworm!

In order for us to provide you with protection, your pet does have to have had a physical exam at Hazeldean Animal Hospital within the last 12 months to have a current veterinary patient client relationship.

Until June 1st, Spectra is not needed in our dogs but if a 4Dx test is current can be picked up to be ready for the season. Unfortunately, we feel from what we have seen, outdoor pets should be covered for something to handle ticks now!

We, at Hazeldean Animal Hospital, are here to help you make the right decision for your family – please call to have us set aside you tick prevention.
