Waking up from anesthesia can sometimes be scary and confusing for our patients. We do everything possible to help take away their concerns. That can range from a quiet room, low lighting, bundling them in warm blankets, or in some cases we'll even walk around with them to reduce their stress. Here's a picture of our awesome summer vet assistant, Danny, who really helped our little friend recovering from a dental procedure. πŸ₯°

This is a great example of how a pet's tooth can look healthy on the outside but hide severe dental disease underneath the gum line. The roots of this tooth were very diseased and the tooth needed to be extracted ASAP! This is why we never recommend anesthetic-free hand scaling as an alternative to a thorough dental examination and radiographic assessment by a veterinarian.

Thankfully this gorgeous pup is going to be feeling much better with that problem tooth out! 😁🦷

πŸ”₯HOT WEATHER WARNING πŸ”₯

There is an hot weather warning for Ottawa today and tomorrow. Please consider your pets and take extra precautions to ensure they remain safe.

1. Provide shade and water - Make sure your dog has access to shade and plenty of fresh water throughout the day.

2. Plan your walkies - Walk your dog in the early morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. This will reduce their risk of heatstroke. Be particularly careful if your dog is old, overweight or suffers from breathing difficulties. Missing a walk will not do them any harm.

3. Do the five second pavement test - Pavement can get very hot in the sun and could burn your dog’s paws. Check the pavement with your hand before letting your dog walk on it β€” hold your hand down for five seconds, if it's too hot for you, then it's too hot for your dog's paws.

4. Don't let them get burnt - Keep your dog out of direct sunlight where you can. Use pet-safe sun cream on exposed parts of your dog’s skin, like the tips of their ears and nose. Ask your vet for more advice if needed.

5. Don't leave your pet in the car, cars become very hot very quickly! If you absolutely have to travel your pet use your air con if you have it and keep journey length to a minimum, stop regularly for water breaks.

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!

Today we are featuring our fabulous Geneva! Since Geneva is camera shy, here’s a picture of their dog Sassy - their beagle lab mix.

Geneva completed an honours degree in Women’s and Gender Studies with a minor in Sexuality Studies at Carleton University in 2021 and fortunately followed their love of animals and client care to a position as a veterinary receptionist.

Geneva has been in the vet world since 2022 and cannot explain how fulfilling it has been. First working as an emergency receptionist and finding emergency medicine a bit too fast paced, they’ve switched to general practice reception where they can apply their love of making people laugh, hugging big fluffy dogs, and building a friendly rapport to work.

Besides their job, Geneva enjoys hiking, educational videos, Minecraft, sustainable living, and feminisms. You can often find them hanging out with their friends and family, doing DIY projects, and patting Sassy on the belly!

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!
This week we are featuring our lovely Taylor! Taylor originally came to GVC in the spring of 2023 for her co-op while she completed the veterinary technician program at Algonquin College. After a few months here, Taylor knew she wanted to be a permanent member of our team.

That summer she passed her VTNE, the veterinary technician national exam, and earned the title of registered veterinary technician. She has interests in surgery, dentistry, and in-hospital patient care. Her technical skills are well beyond her years, and she's a superstar at collecting blood samples.

Outside of work Taylor enjoys reading and collecting books, playing guitar, attending concerts, spending time with friends, family, and her 11-year old beagle-lab mix named Sandy.

GVC had a unique patient yesterday! This juvenile red squirrel was saved by our amazing wildlife protector RVT Rachel. She heroically rescued the beautiful squirrel from a busy highway filled with traffic. The squirrel was later transferred into the capable hands of a licensed wildlife refuge. 🐿️ πŸ₯°

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!
Today we are featuring someone very special. Rachel is our lead technician, and she has been a registered veterinary technician for 25 years! Rachel has forgotten more about medicine than most of us will ever know, which says a lot since she rarely forgets anything.

Rachel joined the GVC family in 2011! She is a jack of all trades with a true passion for veterinary medicine. She takes pride in providing the highest standard of care for her patients. She loves training, and our other techs credit her with helping them to become the techs they are today.

When she's not at work, Rachel enjoys painting, gardening, preparing for Halloween and riding her motorcycles, SeaDoos or snowmobiles with her husband nearly as much as spending quality time with her Havanese pups Hazel and Zeke and her birds Trooper and George.

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!!

This week we are featuring our fabulous RVT, Keri!
Keri joined the Greenboro family as a placement student after finishing the veterinary technician program at Algonquin College. Eight years later and she still loves what she does.

Keri has a passion for dentistry and loves filling the role of dental technician. Keri is responsible for the anesthesia, dental radiographs and dental cleanings of all the patients who undergo a comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment at GVC!

In her down time, she enjoys playing board games and computer games with friends, reading, or watching movies with her 3 cats, Finn, Charlie, and Milo.

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!!

While our human staff is very important, this guy would argue that he is the MOST important member of the GVC family.

PAWL is a fulltime resident at GVC, and the self appointed meownager. We're unsure of his age (maybe 9?) but he has been running things here for 4 years. His daily duties include decreasing productivity by sleeping on keyboards, performing quality control on any food items left in his territory and bird watching. 🦜

Pawl stays out of reception, so you may not see him at your appointments. He has free run on the rest of the clinic, and can usually be found sleeping in the sun.

We're taking a break from our team features to celebrate a special week at the clinic! We want to give a special thank you to our two receptionists, Cassidy and Geneva! Without them we wouldn't be able to provide the level of customer service that we pride ourselves on. Thank you for all that you do

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!

Today we are featuring our superstar veterinary assistant! Katie is the heart of our GVC family and is always looking out for others. She advocates for all of us and makes sure that every birthday is celebrated with a tasty treat!

Katie is responsible for assisting our technicians by restraining patients or distracting them with treatos, cheez whiz πŸ§€ or the occasional interpretive dance. She also takes care of hospital maintenance and surgery prep.

Katie has a degree is psychology, but her love of animals pulled her towards the veterinary field. She loves cats and shares her home with a tuxedo cat (her favourite kind!) named Meeko.

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!

Today we are featuring Dr. Justine Antunes! Dr. Antunes has been part of the Greenboro family since 2018 when she moved to Ottawa. She comes from a small town near Toronto, where she spent her childhood obsessing over dog encyclopedias. She shares her home with her 2 golden retrievers, Ellie and Susie.

Dr. Antunes has a special interest in animal behaviour and soft tissue surgery. She loves sharing her skills and techniques, and is currently providing surgical mentorship to a handful of newer veterinarians in the Ottawa area.

In her free time, Dr. Antunes can be found taking her pups on adventures or playing video games.

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!

Next on our list is Dr. Hayley Inkpen! Hayley joined our team in October and we are so happy to have her.

Hayley was born in St John's, Newfoundland, but spent most of her life in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Hayley and her fiance Chris (also a vet!) finally settled in Ottawa, which they now call home. They have a young son, James, and share their home with a senior pit bull named Gordie and a highland lynx cat named Boris. Both are rescues, as this is something Hayley is very passionate about.

Hayley loves all aspects of veterinary medicine, but has a special interest in animal behaviour and dentistry. Hayley looks forward to meeting you and your pets!

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY!

This is a face that everyone will recognize. Cassidy has been a veterinary assistant for 8 years and is our lead client care representative. She joined the GVC family after graduating the VA program and never left.

Cassidy is responsible for taking care of our wonderful clients. It doesn't matter how good the rest of the team is, if she wasn't here, we would be lost. She helps us to triage all of the information coming in so that our patients can receive the appropriate care. She loves animals, but the thing she cares most about is their owners. She strives to make each experience a positive one, and always advocate for our clients.

Outside of work Cassidy can be found spending time with her family, human and animal.

We're bringing back MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS!

To kick things off, we have our fearless leader. Brenna has been a registered veterinary technician for 11 years. She grew up bringing her pets to GVC, and a year ago fate led her back to us when her career shifted her into management.

You may catch a glimpse of her helping at reception, but she spends most of her time in our treatment area flexing her skills. Brenna is responsible for the daily operations of the clinic, but her most important job is professional cat cuddler.

Her cat obsession is evident as she has more cat tattoos than she can count. She shares her home with her 2 ragdolls, Mordecai and Riley 🐱🐱
