Our onion crop went through a lot this season. And it’s about time they get a dedicated post on here.

First off, shortly after planting, we had an unprecedented widespread maggot infestation and we thought surely it was game over in the spring.

They were then hit by a hail storm in early June. That was a fun day. Luckily the damage was minimal and they were able to pull through.

Lastly, even with all hands on deck (thank you HCF team!) the weeds could not be stopped and the rain fed them all season long until you didn’t even know the onions existed in the first place.

BUT we have been pleasantly surprised with the harvest so far. Through the wading of weeds we have pulled up some of the nicest onions we’ve ever grown. And we’ve still got three more varieties to go! Not even sure where we will be able to cure them all but I guess that’s now a good problem to have.

Thank you rain, soil, sun and hands! And we hope you get to enjoy some tasty alliums going into the fall and winter!

We’ve got some really fun summer crops going bananas right now and we thought it would be great to introduce them to ya!

1. First up, this beauty tomato is called “Magic Bullet” and it’s quite similar to “Brad’s Atomic Grape” that we’ve grown in the past (and won best tomato at tomato fest in 2018!). It is soooo delicious and crazy looking and you must try it! Find it in our cherry tomato medley.

2. Matthew is in cauliflower bliss. This variety of cauliflower is allll about the amazingly delicious and beautiful green stem. We know you cauli-lovers have been missing it the last couple of weeks and we’re happy to say we’ll have some ready for this weekend’s markets!

3. This is a very underrated gem in my opinion. I didn’t think much about it until we grilled some up last week and it blew my socks off. This light green summer squash has such a beautiful sweet flavour and the texture is out of this world - other zucchini seems to bland next to it now. Definitely worth a try!

4. Matthew is learning how to play the Napa trumpet. This is a new variety we’re trying out and it’s rightfully named “Red Trumpet.” The pink/purple gradient of colour is a wonderful sight and everyone knows eating colour is good for you. Available this weekend at market too!

5. Lastly, eggplant, eggplant, eggplant. So. Much. Eggplant. This is “Fairytale,” a mini eggplant that is accompanied by “Hansel” and “Gretel” (who comes up with these names?!). We’ve been eating so many of these. Super easy to throw on the grill and dip in chipotle sauce. Fry them up, marinate them, stew them. Super easy to prep and they have great flavour and texture. Come buy a boatload this weekend. I’m sure we’ll have enough!

The last wrap of the season. And a wonderful flower season it has been! It’s time to focus on getting the storage crops in and fall farm cleanup, as well as tucking in lots of bulbs for next spring. But we’ll still see you at the farmer’s market every weekend with all the veg! Thanks once again for your continued support Ottawa 💚
