Cats can be pretty fastidious about their grooming, so if you notice changes in their coat or grooming habits it is best to bring them into their veterinarian for an exam. Decreased grooming and a more dishevelled looking coat can be signs of an underlying medical issue.

Our team and our x-ray machine were working hard last week! Our technicians took a total of 29 x-rays over 3 days!
These two x-rays stood out the most. They are from two different dogs, showing two different kind of bone fracture.
The first x-ray shows a pelvic fracture, which you might have to zoom in to see.
The second image shows a very obvious femoral fracture.
Determining a course of treatment for fractures is very different for each animal, and our veterinarians often consult with orthopedic specialists to determine the best treatment. Both of these dogs were sent home with good pain management and strict rest while we decide what the next steps are!

Ever wondered what 🩸looks like under the microscope? This sample was taken from a pup that was in for surgery last week after his Complete Blood Count (CBC) showed some abnormalities.
In the images, we can see lots of red blood cells, two white blood cells: a neutrophil and a monocyte, and several thrombocytes (platelets). There are three cells on the second image that are slightly larger and darker, and this is called polychromasia. This usually means that these red blood cells are slightly immature.
Bloodwork is often processed through our IDEXX machines, but sometimes we need to look at the blood under the microscope to get a better look at what is going on!

Fun fact Friday!
This chart shows how we track glucose monitoring on our diabetic patients. Timing for feeding, insulin injections, and tracking blood glucose levels is very important for these patients so that we can tell how their body is responding to the insulin injections. It's also important for these patients to be on a diet that helps to control their weight and glucose management.
By doing what is called a "glucose curve" on this dog, we were able to determine that his insulin dose was too low, and that he needed more units of insulin through the day to control his blood glucose. A diagnosis of diabetes may be intimidating for you and your pet, but we make sure to provide these owners and patients with lots of information and support while they navigate this new change!
