Melvin is looking for a very special foster to adopt home! Must be located in Grey Bruce and able to attend vet visits in Owen Sound.

Melvin / M / 10Y / 7lbs / Dashchund

Melvin (aka Melly) is a very sweet and sensitive little guy. He is very cuddly and wants to be sitting with his person or being carried around around by them. He enjoys getting pets and love all day. When he is excited to see you, he will walk over and wag his little hairless tail and it's the cutest thing.

Melvin is house trained and is trusted free roaming when left alone. He is low energy and would rather snuggle than go for a walk. He does have separation anxiety and will cry when he can't see his person, but he does settle after about 10-15 minutes. He has a few health issues, which we are continuing to work through (this is why he is a foster to adopt). When he came into our care, he had a severe skin infection, which has been successfully treated. He did lose a lot of his fur though because of this, so his back half is almost naked. He is receiving a medicated bath once a week. He is also on hypoallergenic food from the vet. He also has some mobility issues which is possibly from arthritis and malnutrition but could also be from a previous injury. He does get around well, just slowly. He is working on gaining a few more pounds as well.

Melvin is shy when meeting new people but eventually will warm up. He gets along well with other dogs and cats. He would be fine with respectful children 8+. Melvin is looking for a quiet home with minimal stairs or a family who is comfortable carrying him up and down the stairs. He is looking for someone who is home often as he doesn't like to be alone, or someone who can bring him with them on their daily activities.

If you are interested in fostering to adopt Melvin, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Lexi / F / 4Y / 11lbs / Shih Tzu / Fostered in Owen Sound

Lexi is a dream dog....she is affectionate, quiet, easy going and incredibly sweet. Her fosters gush about how she is a joy to have around! She loves to cuddle and sit on your lap, playing with the other dogs in her foster home, and going for walks. She is a little nervous of loud noises.

Lexi is house trained and is trusted free roaming when left alone. She walks well on leash and is low/medium energy. She has shown no signs of separation anxiety and has been left alone for up to 6 hours with no problem. She is a smart girl and is working on learning basic commands. Lexi had bladder stones when she arrived in our care and has undergone surgery to remove those. She is on a urinary support diet (from the vet) and has her kibble soaked in water to help prevent reoccurrence. Her adopters will need to continue this diet for her. There is always the chance of a reoccurrence and need for future surgery.

Lexi is friendly and outgoing when meeting new people. She loves to soak up all of the attention! She is great with other dogs, cats and kids. She would love a family who is home often to give her plenty of attention and include her in daily activities. She'd love a dog friend to play with but would also be fine as an only dog. She would do well in a house or apartment, in a quiet neighbourhood.

If you are interested in adopting Lexi, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Addy / F / 10Y / 26lbs / Beagle mix / Fostered in Owen Sound

Addy is the sweetest older gal you'll meet. She loves a good nap, food (she's the first to let you know it's feeding time), bum scratches, sorting the recycling and being part of the family and join in whatever is going on. She's true to her hound roots and will sneak the other dog's chews and hide them around the house when they're out. When asked what her favourite thing about Addy is, her foster said "Where to start....she is so sweet; a very easy dog to look after, quiet in the home but rewarding to interact with. She lets the kids 'tuck' her into bed (cover her entirely in blankets). "

Addy is house trained but if you miss her cues, she will potty in the house. She is trusted free roaming when home alone. She is a very slow walker who moves at her own pace and can be stubborn when she wants to investigate something, be prepared for lots of stops and a leisurely pace. She is currently getting 3 to 4 15 minute slow paced walks a day. Addy is very arthritic and requires gentle handing. She is receiving Meloxicam daily as well as librela injections. She is also receiving apoquel for her itchy skin. She did recently have a dental and had a few teeth removed.

Addy is polite when meeting new people. She will happily go up and say hello and see what is going on but does not require attention from guests. She is good with other dogs, cats and respectful children. Her ideal home has minimal stairs and someone who is home often. If there is another dog in the home, they would need to be lower energy or respect her space and not try to play rough with her. She is looking for a retirement home to spend her remaining years getting lots of love and snacks.

If you are interested in adopting Addy, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Happy November everyone! Or should we say…Happy Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

This month we’d like to raise awareness for senior dogs looking for homes and highlight some of the benefits to owning an older canine companion.

It is unfortunate when any dog is in need of rescue, however it’s even harder to see a dog surrendered by the family they’ve known their whole lives. Senior dogs tend to stay in shelters and rescues longer and are repeatedly overlooked by adopters...but did you know that senior dogs can often be calmer, require less work than a puppy or younger dog and also have lower adoption fees?

We have three very sweet seniors in our care right now - Teresa, Addy and Buddy- and they are both looking for a retirement home.

Teresa is a gentle, cuddly, 8 year old Chihuahua. She is very loving and wants to snuggle on the couch with her person all day long. She is working on her house training and is doing well with her crate training. She would be fine with kids 12+. Her ideal home is with someone who has lots of time to spend with her. She would love a house with a yard in a quiet neighbourhood to continue to practice her leash walking skills.

Addy is a sweet 10 year old Beagle mix. She loves a good nap, food and bum scratches. She is quiet and described by her fosters as easy to look after. Addy is house trained but if you miss her cues, she will potty in the house. She is a very slow walker who moves at her own pace and requires gentle handling. She is good with other dogs, cats and respectful children. Her ideal home has minimal stairs and requires someone to be home often too.

Buddy is a calm and gentle 15 year old shih tzu Yorkie mix. He loves to cuddle up on the couch with his person and have a nap. He also enjoys snacks and going for short walks around the block. He is good with other dogs, cats and kids. He's looking for a home with minimal stairs. He is a simple guy who is looking for a comfy bed and loving family to spend his time with.

If you’d like to find out more about either of these seniors, please visit our website to view their full bios: https://www.secondchanceanimalsanctuary.ca/adoptables

Perdie / F / 3Y / 7lbs / Terrier mix / Fostered in Owen Sound

Perdie is a lovely little dog to have around! She is super affectionate, playful, funny and smart. She enjoys cuddling up on the couch with her person, watching a movie and having a snack. Her fosters say their favourite thing about her is how excited she gets when they come home, she'll jump in the air so high! She does well in the car and loves to lounge in the yard. She is a flight risk so no off leash for this girl!

Perdie is house trained with frequent trips outside and she is also p*e pad trained. She is trusted free roaming when left alone. She is nervous on walks and needs encouragement to continue. She has not shown any separation anxiety. She does guard her food from other dogs so she's fed in a separate room. She does not guard anything from people though. She is medium energy.

Perdie is shy when meeting new people but quickly warms up. She is good with other dogs and kids 8+. She has not been cat tested but would likely be fine with slow intros. She is looking for someone in a quiet neighbourhood who will help her build confidence on her walks. Someone with lots of time to give her plenty of snuggles and playtime!

If you are interested in adopting Perdie, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Update: Adopted!
Buddy / M / 15Y / 17lbs / Yorkie Shih Tzu mix / Fostered in Owen Sound

Buddy is a very easy going, gentle, and affectionate old gentleman. He always wants to be near his person and will be their shadow. He loves snacks, pets and sleeping. He also enjoys lounging in the yard and going for short, slow strolls. He is so sweet and calm. He does great in the car and loves going on adventures and to Starbucks for a pup cup!

Buddy is house trained, with frequent trips outside. He is trusted free roaming when left alone. He does have mild separation anxiety and will occasionally cry when left alone, but does eventually settle. He walks well on leash. He had a dental while in our care and had to have his remaining teeth removed and a nasal fistula repaired. He has a grade 5 heart murmur and is on the medication Vetmedin (approximately $170 for 50 days). He is starting to lose his hearing but compensates just fine!

Buddy is good when meeting new people and will happily go up and say hi and receive pets. He is good with respectful children, other dogs and cats. He is looking for a quiet home where someone is with him more often than not. He needs a home with very few stairs. He is looking for a place to retire and live the good life. His adoption fee is $300.

If you are interested in adopting Buddy, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Blue / M / 3Y / 20lbs / Boston Terrier / Fostered in Owen Sound

Blue is looking for a special home! This little guy came to us from a shelter in Quebec where he was an owner surrender but escaped the shelter and was on the run for almost a month. He was finally caught and returned to the shelter. He was very underweight when he came to us but he's already gained a few pounds in the living care of his foster! He loves his toys, snacks, pup cups and belly rubs. His foster says "He is a complete sweetheart and loves to give kisses and to smoosh his face up against his person". He is described as energetic and playful when engaging with him, cuddly, and will chill with you when he knows you want to relax. He also does great in the car!

Blue is house trained and crate trained. He walks well on leash in a quiet area with no distractions. He can be reactive to other dogs, joggers, bikes or anything that approaches him too quickly. He will bark and pull but he is getting better with his engage/disengage training. This is something his adopter will need to continue to work on with him though and he would benefit from continuing his training with a professional trainer. He is medium energy and is currently getting 1 medium length walk a day plus backyard time. He has shown no separation anxiety and has been left up to 7hrs alone with no issues. He has not shown any guarding behaviours either.

Blue is cautious when meeting new people and prefers slow introductions. He loves to play with other dogs and is submissive with them. No cats. He would be ok with kids 14+. He is looking for a quiet home in a quiet area. He needs a confident and experienced handler who will continue to work on his confidence building and reactivity. He is such a sweet little guy!

If you are interested in adopting Blue, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Teresa / F / 8Y / 4.5lbs / Chihuahua / Fostered in Owen Sound

Teresa is a very sweet, gentle, cuddly and tiny girl. She is so loving and wants to snuggle on the couch with her person all day long. The minute you sit down, Teresa wants up on your lap! She loves to lay across her person's neck, cuddled in as close as she can get. She is mostly quiet, unless the other dogs in the home start barking. She gets very excited when it's bedtime and looks forward to getting cuddled under the blankets for the night in bed with her foster. Her foster mom says that she has been one of the easiest and most enjoyable dogs to have around. Whoever adopts her is going to be extremely lucky!

Teresa is working on her house training and does have the occasional accident inside, if not taken out quick enough. She is currently being taken out for a potty break every 4 hours. She is doing well with her crate training and is crated when left alone. She hasn't had much experience walking on a leash and prefers to lounge in the yard in the sun. She is low energy and enjoys sleeping the day away in a cozy bed. She has shown no guarding behaviours.

Teresa is shy when meeting new people and will bark at them for a few minutes. Once she knows that she can trust you though, she will welcome all of the cuddles. She is good with other dogs and cats. She would be fine with kids 12+. Her ideal home is with someone who has lots of time to spend with her. She would love a house with a yard to practice her leash walking skills, where it's quiet and calm.

If you are interested in adopting Teresa, please complete an adoption application on our website. Her adoption fee is $600.
