Mission Statement
Dryden’s own Second Chance Pet Network provides a safe haven for surrendered and abandoned animals, pending their adoption into loving, forever homes. Vision Statement
To help control the pet population in Dryden and surrounding area through spaying and neutering and to have all pets adopted into loving, forever homes. We are a not for profit organization who relies on the genero

us donations from the citizens of Dryden and surrounding area. Donations are graciously accepted with charitable receipts provided for all cash donations of $20 and over. Second Chance Pet Network is a registered charity, #85116 7858 RR0001. To help with the cost of shelter, food and litter, we run a flea market at the shelter site. These items are available for a monetary donation – we only require that the donation amount be reasonable in relation to the value of the items received. We also manage the feral cat colonies at Dryden’s Hwy 502 and Barclay Landfill sites, as well as the landfill site in Sioux Lookout, through a T-N-R program (trap-neuter-return). We accept donations of cat/dog food, Canadian Tire money or Extra Foods superbucks for the Food for Pets program for Dryden’s Food Bank. Recently, a low cost spay/neuter program has been put in place. A Kidz Klub is also available for children to participate in. New members and volunteers welcome. We are currently in need of foster homes so we can start giving dogs a second chance as well. We accept volunteers of all ages. To foster an animal or to become a Friend of Second Chance Pet Network, please download and fill out our SCPN Friends Application & Waiver (pdf). Help create a shelter by purchasing a brick for $25. A permanent shelter to service Dryden, Sioux Lookout and the surrounding areas is desperately needed. Please donate to our Build-a-Shelter, Brick-by-Brick campaign. A $25 donation will purchase one brick in your name or in honour of someone else or in memory of a loved one or just because. Check out the campaign board at the shelter.

Tang is a sad story -- he's between 4-5 months old - AND IS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.

He was found on the side of the road, on the Hwy to Red Lake about 2 hours from Dryden. He had been attacked by another dog. He spent some time at the vets and now is in the care of Second Chance. He is very well behaved and appears to be fully house trained....no messes so far.

Adoption is $300 which includes vaccinations, micro-chipping and he has been neutered.
If interested in adoption please message myself or you can call Ann at Second Chance at 937-6943. -- Yvette Burns

While working on a different project today, I had to add up how many cats we have been working with in the last few years. In 2022, 2023 and so far in 2024, between TNVR and intake to the shelter, we have touched the lives of 817 cats. A large number for this small area. And just think, everyone of them are now altered and vaccinated!

This puppy, about 4 to 5 months old, was found on the side of the road, on the hwy to Red Lake about 2 hours from Dryden. He has been attacked by another dog. I think I need to take over Karma's job for a few days. The incoming calls to surrender cats is not believable but the icing on the cake was this morning....a person driving Ignace to Dryden saw a box on the side of the road....this person always checks boxes because they have found puppies like that. No puppies but 2 beautiful tabby cats...not kittens but young. Taped in a box and left....why?

We supply food.....we do spay/neuters....we take the animal you no longer care about....what more can we do?

SADLY, THE PEOPLE WHO NEED TO READ THIS WILL NOT.

Shelters and rescues are overflowing.
There is just nowhere for the animals to go.
Be responsible.

To the Public. An open letter,
You are breaking the strongest people I've ever met.
You, with your broken fence whose dogs get out and you don't go to the shelter to pick them up.
You, with that new baby so no more room for your "best friend."
You, who needs to go on vacation but doesn't want to pay for boarding.
You, who didn't vaccinate so rescuers pour their heart, soul, and wallet into watching YOUR cat/dog die in their arms or on the vet table.
You, who didn't spay your cat/dog so she's pregnant and you can't deal with it so you drop her at the shelter or call animal control.
You, who stands in line for two and half hours to surrender your cat/dog to an overfull shelter where owner surrenders are the first to be euthanized.
You, who dumps defenseless kittens/puppies in a field where coyotes are known to roam.
You, who throws kittens/puppies out your window as you drive down the freeway.
You, who buys from a puppy-mill or pet store when moms, puppies, juveniles, and adults were euthanized this morning at just one shelter among hundreds.
You, who just don't care about the living, breathing, feeling animals who depend on us to be their voice.
The strongest people I know are breaking, because of you.
And I don't know what to tell them.
There is nothing to say.
*WE* are those people breaking.

If You Think Shelter Cats are Expensive, Wait Until You See the Price of a FREE One!

How many times have you seen a post like this?

Wanted Free Kitten -- We are a loving family and will be a great home for a kitten. We went to the shelter last week and they want $125 for a kitten! That is outrageous. Who can afford to pay that for a kitten? That is way beyond our budget, so we are hoping for a free kitten.

When I saw this post on NextDoor there were already several responses from people offering free or "inexpensive" kittens. One woman proudly claimed that she lets her cats have kittens as a "community service for people who can't afford the insane shelter adoption fees."

Are rescue and shelter adoption fees unreasonable? Several years ago, my coworker "Annie" chose to adopt a free kitten to save money. She knew I was involved in rescue and asked me for recommendations for affordable vaccines and altering. Annie was certain that a free kitten was going to save her a lot of money. Since money was very tight in her household, I had her make an appointment at Feral Cat Spay Neuter Project for the kitten's spay. The cost for spay, initial vaccines, microchipping and treatment for parasites were going to be only $100. A bargain! But she still needed combo testing and follow up rabies and FVRCP vaccines. That was going to add another $125 to her total. At $225, this was more than the adoption fee for a fully vetted kitten. But before she could take her in to be spayed her free kitten became very ill. She spent over $1,200 trying to save her life.

What are the costs in your community? In our area, adoption fees for fully vetted kittens tend to run between $100 and $150. This includes a wellness exam, age-appropriate vaccines, treatment for fleas and worms, spay / neuter, FIV / FeLV testing and microchipping.

We are fortunate to have low-cost options in our community, but most areas aren't so lucky. At a regular vet clinic, expect to pay $250 on the low end and up to $800 for more expensive clinics. If your free kitten has a common health issue like an upper respiratory illness, add $150 to $500 to your total. For a major medical issue, it could be thousands.

If you know someone interested in adding a kitten or two to their family, be sure to tell them that they can save money by adopting from a local shelter or rescue. If they are skeptical, encourage them to call their vet and find out the fees ahead of time. Free kittens contribute to the homeless cat population in our country because their uninformed adopters don't realize the costs of vet care. If you can't afford the adoption fee for a spayed and vaccinated kitten, you absolutely can't afford a free kitten!
