Good Morning..I just want to talk about how clients can reach out to Us regarding booking an appointment/ advice/ questions etc. There are many of You who book appointments on messenger. We are not on the social platforms when We are actively working and will only answer when We have a break or at the end of the work day. I have notifications turned off of messenger but I do check when I can. We do not answer any messages during Our time off..once We leave the shop social media/ emails are left until We return to work.
We deleted Our instagram account because of trying to juggle too many sites to monitor. We have also decided to no longer book appointments on the email ( sorry) .
The best way to reach out to Us is by phone 519-343-3065.. We have voicemail and all messages are retrieved every work day morning and We will leave a message if We are off for holidays etc..
Thank You šŸ¾šŸ¾šŸ¾

We wouldn't want to wear a giant fur coat in the summer, so should your dog? As always, there's no black and white answer. It's entirely dependent on the type of coat your dog carries. Non-Shedding Coats There are several breeds that do not shed. Dogs like Poodles, Soft Coated Wheaton Terriers or Sh...

Continuing with the Spring has sprung..Today is all about the Winter fleeces. The pictures below are all Dogs who are mixes of Poodle and a double coat. The fluffy undercoat has twisted together with the curly coat..add snow, water and bathing and We get ā€œ sheep fleeceā€. All of the dogs pictured needed to be clipped short as there is no humane way to safely dematt . We try to get the largest blade under the pelt but sometimes there is no choice. Once the coat is off it is the perfect time to start daily combing/ brushing so hopefully the matts stay away..It is only hair and it always grows back..

Spring has Sprung and shed is happening..Today I am going to talk about double coats. Double coated means exactly that.. There is a coarse outer coat or guard hairs and a fluffy undercoat. The undercoat keeps the dog warm during the Winter months and then goes p**f as the temps become warmer.
Breeds who are considered double coated are Northern breeds ( Siberians, Samoyed, Malamute, Shiba etc), Golden Retrievers ( and mixes), Bernese Mountain Dogs ( and their mixes) Collies, Shelties, Aussies, Border Collies ( and their mixes), some Terriers and cats.
The 3 pictures I have included are dogs who were ready to ā€œ blowā€ and the comb out time was very easy and done in less than an hr. We will then bath these dogs with a deshedding product, blow out any loose coat that is left and then crate dry..If a dog comes in whoā€™s coat isnā€™t ready to come out We will bath with deshed products, blow dry, crate dry and send them home. We will then have them come back in a month or so to hopefully get them brushed out. Each dog sheds on their own scheduleā€¦Our own personal dogs blow at different times and sometimes We are just getting coat out in June or July.
We never recommend shaving a double coated breed..the outer hairs protect the skin and allows air to circulate to keep them cool in the summer. To shave a double coat We have to either comb all undercoat out or clip super short under it. Sometimes the guard hairs do not grow back so You get a patchy coat with thicker undercoat. If clipped short the dog is at risk of sunburn, bugs bites, scrapes and scratches and overheating.
Double coats are one of the easiest coats to deal with at home..A good brush through a couple times a week..Check for burrs etc and remove them..A full professional groom in the Spring to remove undercoat, another in the Fall to get coat ready for the Winter and then a good brush, bath, toenails and foot tidy in between will keep your Dog in tip top shape.
How do you know if your dog is ready to ā€œ blowā€..You can see what looks like chicken feathers, you can pluck hair out with your fingers..When you can reach in and grab some coat it comes out in clumpsā€¦
We enjoy blowing out coats ( but then both of Us are owned by double coated breeds) Deb has Siberian Huskies and Sue has Shiba Inu ā€¦

Today We are spot lighting nails. We see long and overgrown nails everyday. In fact many times the nails have begun to grow back into the pads. Long nails alter a dogā€™s foot and also make it hard to walk properly. Many clients feel that We havenā€™t cut their petā€™s nails short enough however We can only cut back to the blood vessel ( quick). The more nails get cut the more the quick moves back. We both cut Our own Dogā€™s nails weekly/ biweekly.
The chart shows and explains the nail structure. Nails can be done easily at home. Ask Us what supplies You need to do the job. We suggest getting a ā€œpawdicureā€ once a month to keep nails in good condition.
Cats also benefit from regular nail trims.

The answer to 'what is a professional?' is an individual who earns money by performing a specialised task or activity. Professionals typically undertake significant education and training to build professional skills. A professional requires competence and extensive industry knowledge. They typically obtain and hone their skills through a series of professional examinations, adherence to codes of conduct and the ability to maintain standards of ethics.
Someone asked ( out of the blue) if We are professional Groomers. Through the years We have heard rumours etc saying that neither of Us have actual training..so once again I will answer. Pet grooming is NOT a regulated or licensed profession like Hair dressers. Many years ago there were numerous private schools and options to also apprentice in salons. The Government shut down all but a few schools as they were going to add Grooming to Community Colleges. This hasnā€™t happened so at the moment there are a few grooming schools open or there is an online option. Anyone can open up a shop and say they are a dog Groomer.
Sue has 35+ years in the profession. She attended Petā€™s Beautiful in London and then became the Groomer at the Listowel Vet Clinic ( Clippers).
Deb was employed with the Government of Ontario and when Her job was downsized She decided to retrain and attended Dogs by Bryson in Caledon Ontario. Grooming wasnā€™t a new thing as She groomed her own dogs for Competition and helped out a local Groomer during busy times..Upon graduating Deb joined Sue at the Vet clinic..
Together We decided to venture out on Our own and Dog Grooming by Deb & Sue was born almost 25 yrs ago.
Yes We are Professionals. We belong to Professional Associations, belong to the Canadian Kennel Club, attend workshops, seminars, dog shows..We continue to take classes with Our Own dogs in performance sports.
We continue to learn new ways to make grooming a great experience for all of Our clients ( old and new).
New equipment, new techniques to keep Our hands and bodies safe and new products that clean and condition without added chemicals.
We have also had a review that said Our Shop was shabby . We moved to this new space for so many reasons.. A larger space , more parking, less traffic for exercising dogs. The larger area allowed Us to put down nonslip matting so dogs can run around and so that We can train Our own dogs. The big bonus is that We can open the back garage door in the warm months and be grooming ā€œ outsideā€.
I hope that this has answered some questions and cleared up some rumoursā€¦

We have been having many calls asking if We groom puppies..Yes We do..Yes We love grooming puppies BUT..
We love to get puppies introduced at an early age. A short calm and relaxed first grooming experience can set the stage for the next grooms. We usually just do feet, face, bum, nails and a bath..This short appointment introduces new sounds, combs, brushes, dryers etc..
We suggest that puppies donā€™t come until after their 2 nd set of shots..This protects them from so many nasty bugs..Right now there are confirmed Parvo cases in and around Our area so we feel better safe than sorry.
You can prepare your puppy for grooming..play with their feet, face and ears..have them stand up on a raised surface such as freezer/ washer..introduce a comb and brush..get them used to sounds of hair dryers etc.Lots of praise and gentle handling ensures a positive outcomeā€¦

01/20/2023

Today I am going to talk about Poodle mixes. They come in all sizes, colours and coat length. These coats are usually hard to maintain as many are a mixture of a Poodle and a double coated breed( Goldens, sheep dogs, Australian Shepherds and Bernese Mountain dogs, Shih Tzus, Schnauzers and Cockers)..Poodles have a curly coat that can be easily clippered to remain manageable however when that coat is mixed with an undercoat issues begin..The undercoat twists together with the curly coat and boom matts.
Many Owners love the look of the big, fluffy abundant coat however it needs constant combing, brushing and grooming to keep it looking itā€™s best. I have included 2 charts that show which parts need the most attention. If You want Your dog to have a huge coat then they need to be brushed & combed faithfully everyday. Some dogs need to be combed twice a day to keep knots at bay. If the dog gets to swim then they must be totally dried ,brushed and combed as water makes coats matt faster..snow ,rain and frequent bathing also causes matts.
Many of Our friends and colleagues no longer groom ā€œ Doodlesā€ due to the size of the dogs and the huge hard to manage coats. They are very labour intensive and difficult to keep in top condition.
The 3 pictures I have included are matted coats. As professionals We will never attempt to dematt any coat that has a vast amount of matting. This is very painful to the dog and honestly We would never be able to get near them again ( I donā€™t blame them ). We donā€™t shave short unless We have to..We always try to get the largest blade through to leave a coat cover.
It is a good idea for Owners to work with their Groomers. Decide how much grooming they want to do at home..What kind of lifestyle does the dog enjoy ( swimming, hiking, laying in the dirt)..are they country dogs..does the dog hate being brushed, combed or pulled on constantly..how often can You afford to have your pet groomed. All of these factors can help You decide what is best for You and Your pet.
As these mixes are just that mixes there are very many coat types going on. Most dogs will not show their adult coats until a year or so ..the texture can change..colour will change.
If there are any questions please ask..
Next week I will talk about the best tools to have at home for grooming..
