A $30,000 horse can't fix a 50¢ rider, but a good rider can fix a $0.50 horse.

This old adage holds timeless truth in the horse industry. While a talented horse can certainly make a rider look good, it's the rider's skills, knowledge, and horsemanship that ultimately determine success.

Many won’t like this or agree with it. Here’s the thing it only takes one mess up to create a problem with a nice horse. It takes 3 times or more to correct a problem.

Nice horses get ruined everyday!

Invest in Yourself, Not Just Your Horse!

As riders, we often focus on finding the perfect horse, investing in top-notch equipment, and seeking out the best trainers. But let's not forget the most critical element “ourselves”.

Developing your riding skills, understanding of the horse’s behavior, and ability to communicate effectively with your horse takes time, effort, and practice. It's not just about sitting on a horse and looking pretty – it's about becoming a true partner with every horse you ride.

Don't Rely Solely on Your Horse's Talent – Develop Your Own!

Congratulations to the connections of Ben Maher’s ride Point Break, who has been named as recipient of the Swedish Warmblood Association’s showjumping “rising stallion” award. The accolade is given to two sires – one dressage and one showjumping – who have made a promising start in their breeding careers, and whose offspring show potential as future sport horses.

Springbank II VH, ridden by Germany’s Yara Reichert, was awarded the dressage prize.

Congratulations to Becky Moody Dressage and Jagerbomb who scored two personal bests in Amsterdam to finish runners-up behind Lottie Fry and Glamourdale! That leaves them 19th in the standings with three more shows to go. The top nine in the standings will go forward to the final

Why $50 to $80 for a Riding Lesson is the Bargain of a Lifetime! 🐴

At first glance, $50 to $80 might seem like a lot for a riding lesson. After all, it’s just 30 minutes or an hour on a horse, right? But here’s the kicker: that price doesn’t even begin to cover the full value of what you’re getting.

Let me break it down for you:

When you pay for a riding lesson, you’re not just paying for the time spent in the saddle. You’re paying for decades of knowledge, years of training, and an entire operation dedicated to creating a safe, fun, and rewarding experience.

You’re paying for an incredible partnership between horse and human—something most people only dream of experiencing.

You’re paying for the *generations of knowledge and skill* that went into breeding or selecting a safe, reliable horse—a horse that can teach a beginner to steer or build confidence in an intermediate rider.

You’re paying for the *thousands of hours* that trainers and instructors spent educating that horse, putting on the miles, and teaching it to be patient, forgiving, and downright saintly.

You’re paying for the tack: saddles, bridles, bits, saddle pads, girths, and all the fittings—carefully selected for comfort, fit, and durability. You’re also paying for the endless supply of grooming tools, from curry combs to hoof picks to detangling spray.

You’re paying for feed: hay, grain, supplements, and the occasional treat. You’re paying for veterinary care, including vaccines, deworming, dental work, and emergency visits. Don’t forget the farrier—someone has to keep those hooves in tip-top shape.

You’re paying for the blankets: rain sheets, winter rugs, coolers—whatever is needed to keep the horses happy and healthy in every season. You’re paying for the halters, lead ropes, and fly masks that keep them comfortable and safe.

You’re paying for the facilities: the arena footing, jumps, fences, barn, and tack room. You’re also paying for the equipment that maintains it all—tractors, ring drags, hoses, water buckets, muck rakes, shovels, and the never-ending repair bills that come with running a stable.

You’re paying for the labor: the early mornings and late nights, the endless stall mucking, the feeding, and the hauling of hay bales. You’re paying for the nights someone walks a colicky horse until the vet arrives.

You’re also paying for the *risk*: every time a lesson horse takes a rider, there’s a chance they could end up hurt or permanently lame. These horses are worth their weight in gold, and it’s my job to keep them safe, healthy, and happy. That’s why they’re only worked a certain amount, jump sparingly, and have strict limits on their workload.

So when you hear, “$50 to $80 for a lesson,” what you’re really getting is the result of years of dedication, hard work, and care. You’re getting a piece of a much larger puzzle—the kind of puzzle that most people don’t see but that makes those 30 or 60 minutes possible.

It’s not “just a lesson.” It’s a lifetime of expertise and a whole village behind it.

I am grateful to my team and the incredible horses for all they bring to people’s experiences. 💝

This this and THIS again!! Even louder for the people at the back!!!
My program my rules. I will put you in competition when you are ready and at the level I think you should be in. Don’t like it, find another coach. Simples!
I WISH trainers and coaches didn’t want the status of “my rider jumped higher than yours” drives me nuts! I strive to see my lot go in and have clean correct rounds above all else at a fair level for there abilities!
Another thing that bothers me, your riders are training 2’9 3ft at home but you put them in cross rails!!! THIS should not be allowed!
We need to see more regulations 100%!

This is unbelievably sad news! Conrad was a joy to be around and took the absolute best care of my horses.
Thoughts go out to all his family, friends and colleagues 💔

It is with heavy hearts we share the news of Conrad’s passing on January 20, 2025.

Conrad was the heart of Momentum, and this practice would not be what it is today without his vision, hard work and leadership.

Above all else, he was an exceptional dad and husband, and our support continues to be with the Wilgenbusch family during this difficult time.

Thank you for your support and patience as we navigate this season.

Service details to follow.

Tack is there for a reason. If you don’t need something don’t use it!
I’m such a lover of my bridles not even having a nose band. Less is more! When I did have a nose band they were loose and not really serving a purpose.
I see all the time riders using this and that because “it looks pretty” or my favourite motto “don’t use something just because it makes YOU feel better”
Pay attention to what your horse needs and doesn’t need!
Here’s hoping that all the competition rings stop the rules to having your horses “dressed” to how they want them and focus on respecting what owners decide is best for there horses 🙏

With all the talk and argument surrounding the idea of a new contraption to measure the tightness of nosebands in dressage competition, I can't help but wonder... 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘥?

There's 𝗔𝗕𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 inherently negative about the use of a noseband (and if you want to preach your belief that nosebands are all just terrible tools of the devil, this isn't the page for you). Where the issues come in, as far as I can tell, is WHY are you using the noseband?

🐴 Are you using it to stabilize the bit?

- then you're probably pulling too much on the reins and causing the problem. (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘵, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘥).

🐴 Are you using it to stop your horse from crossing their jaw?

- then you're probably pulling too much on the reins and causing the problem.

🐴 Are you using it because the horse is "lolling" their tongue?

- then you're probably pulling too much on the reins and causing the problem.

🐴 Are you using it because he opens his mouth when you take contact and try to adjust the position or frame?

- then you're probably pulling too much on the reins and causing the problem.

If you're using the noseband to stop a problem from happening, then the problem lies in the education of the horse and the rider.

🐎 If you're using the noseband because you are competing and rules of tradition compel it, that's a different story.

🐎 If you like the look of it, that's a different story.

🐎 If you like to "bling it up" and feel snazzy, that's a different story.

🐎 If you're using a noseband because you like to honor and respect the traditions of your discipline, even though you don't compete, that's a different story.

🐎 I probably missed some good personal reasons you might have, and they're a different story, too.

So, let me know in the comments section, why are you using a noseband?
