Be aware of the signs of bloat and how to prevent it!

What is it and why is it important to know the signs?

Bloat is when a dogs stomach fills with gas or fluid and ends up twisting. This is serious and can be fatal. The cause of bloat isn't always certain but no matter why it's happened, it's important to get IMMEDIATE vet care.

Blue collar from a previous litter and his owner had this terrifying experience 2 days ago. Luckily, his owner spotted the signs immediately and got him to the vet where he was then transferred to an emergency clinic. He spent 5 HOURS in surgery and then over a day in ICU.

If his owner wasn't aware of the symptoms, this would be a very different post.

SYMPTOMS:

- A swollen, hard belly

- Painful abdomen, especially when touched

- Retching but unable to vomit, or unproductive attempts to vomit

- Rapid, shallow breathing

- Rapid heart rate

- Excessive salivation or drooling

- Restlessness, pacing, and inability to lie down

- Whining, especially when touched

- Collapse

Large, deep chested dogs in particular are at risk for it but any dog can end up with bloat.

There are preventative measures you can take:

- Feed your dog two or three smaller meals instead of one large meal

- Avoid raised food bowls

- Limit water after eating

- Avoid strenuous exercise for 1-2 hours after eating

- Consider a preventative gastropexy for dogs that are at risk of bloat

- Use a probiotic for dogs that are already prone to bloat

- Let your dog eat alone

Today I attended my very first grooming seminar with Nancy Johnson. She came in from Ontario to host this for us. It was a fully packed day dedicated to pet-grooming. It was great to meet some of my fellow groomers in the city, learn some tips and tricks for grooming, and learn ways to be successful on the business side of things too. There’s always so much to learn in this industry and it was nice to finally have something like this locally ❤️🙏

Like people, pets are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and generally should be kept inside during cold weather. No pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather. 🐾🐾

We’ve been back for a week now, and things are in full swing! We had a plethora of messages and voicemails that we are working our way through (if you haven’t heard from us yet, you will soon).

There have been a lot of changes since we reopened; we have some new faces and some who are missing.
We opened our Mount Pearl location on January 6th. If you’re a client of Toni’s, you can now find her managing our Mount Pearl location. If you’d like to book with Toni, message Sophie’s Pet Boutique - Mount Pearl or call them at 709-368-5439, and they’ll be more than happy to help you.
If you’re a client of Harley’s, you will also find her at our new location. We will miss Toni and Harley here in Paradise, but we are very excited to see them in our new space and we know that things will run smoothly in Toni’s capable hands.

Jenna has been with us for over a year, working under my (Jess) direct supervision. She has worked diligently during this time to learn as much as she could to grow her skills and is now taking new clients to build her clientele list.

We also welcomed Alyson to our team; she owns Ruff Life Spaw here in Paradise. After 2.5 years of working on her own, she decided it was time to switch things up and moved in with us. Alyson is also accepting new clients of all sizes.

For the last 8 months, my days off were spent working on the Mount Pearl location to get it ready for opening. Now that it’s open, I will be spending one day a week there to ensure that things run smoothly and to help where needed. I will not be grooming in Mount Pearl; my role will exclusively be as owner.

We look forward to another year with our amazing clients and we’re excited to see what 2025 has in store for us.
