📚 Anchors Aweigh for Our Final Page Sailors Book Club of 2024! 📚

Earlier this month, our DEIB book club, the Page Sailors, gathered for their final meeting of the year to discuss Sitting Pretty by Rebekah Taussig. This thought-provoking read offered heartfelt insights into the lived experiences of people with disabilities and sparked meaningful conversations about accessibility, inclusivity, and representation.

Chosen in honour of Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) in October, Sitting Pretty encouraged us to reflect on how we can create a more inclusive workplace and world.

As we close out another inspiring year of reading and learning together, we're reminded of the importance of listening to diverse voices and championing equity and belonging.

Thank you to all our Page Sailors for your curiosity, compassion, and commitment to growth. Here's to continuing the journey in 2025 with more stories that move us and conversations that inspire change!

We’re thrilled to celebrate the second group of graduates from our innovative All Aboard Residency Program! Supported by the successful techNL funding project, the All Aboard! Programs have drawn a diverse group of participants locally and positioned Genoa as a leader in talent development for the industry in Newfoundland.

Our All Aboard! Program has three levels:
⚓ All Aboard Exposure Week, a 30-hour (one week) introductory to the Shipbuilding design industry.
🚢 All Aboard Internship, a more intensive six-week session focused on production drawings using ShipConstructor.
🛳 All Aboard Residency, a fast-paced twelve-week session focused on 3D modelling in ShipConstructor that also included site visits to four Canadian shipyards, where they witnessed the shipbuilding operations in action!

Together, these programs provide hands-on, real-world learning, an inside look into shipbuilding, and guidance for launching a career in this dynamic industry.

Here’s to our graduates and trainers at the Genoa Academy, who are shaping the future of shipbuilding!

🚢 Wrapping Up an Unforgettable Journey! Back at our Newfoundland office, the Pathway to Ship Design participants brought their Vancouver experience full circle. A week after their return, they shared what they had learned in insightful presentations to the Genoa team. 🎤 From the stages of ship construction and icebreaker design to the unique value of visiting a shipyard as a designer, their presentations showcased their growth and a newfound appreciation for the shipbuilding industry. 🌟 The Pathway to Ship Design trip to Vancouver was an invaluable experience, bridging education and industry for these emerging designers. This initiative highlights Genoa’s commitment to shaping the next generation of shipbuilding professionals—one innovative program at a time. 🎳 Day 4 Evening: After an action-packed day at Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards, our Pathway to Ship Design crew wrapped things up with a lively team-building evening at King Pins Bowling. 🎉 The students joined our BC team for a fun-filled night of bowling, pool, and foosball. The air was filled with friendly competition, shared laughs, and plenty of high-fives as everyone celebrated the connections built during the week. 🤝 This evening was the perfect way to balance the week’s intense learning, leaving everyone with cherished memories of the trip. As the group heads back to Newfoundland, they carry not just new skills, but also unforgettable experiences and stronger bonds.

🚢 Day 4: Behind the Scenes at Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards! The highlight of the week? An immersive tour of Seaspan Shipyards led by our amazing Technical Manager, Val Laktyushin! 👷‍♂️ His deep industry expertise and passion made this experience truly unforgettable. Our Pathway to Ship Design crew explored every corner of the shipyard, including the shipyard's welding Centre of Excellence, material processing areas, and block assembly stations. From the initial material processing stages to sub-assembly, flat panel assembly, forming, block assembly, pre-outfitting, and more—they witnessed the intricate steps that bring a vessel to life. 🔧⚙️

🌟 Touring the OOSV and JSS1 vessels under construction was a standout moment (especially knowing the JSS1 would be set to launch in mere weeks!), but seeing the JSS2 in various stages of assembly hit home. It connected their Genoa work-term experiences to real-world shipbuilding applications, giving them a whole new appreciation for the scale and complexity of the industry.

A huge thank-you to Seaspan for welcoming us into their incredible yards and providing such an inspiring, hands-on learning opportunity! 👏

🚢 This fall, we kicked off the second Pathway to Ship Design for New Technologists program—an incredible post-grad residency funded by techNL. 🎓 Six talented grads and former co-op students from the College of the North Atlantic's Mechanical Engineering Technology program joined us to dive deeper into the world of ship design! 🌊 The program combines hands-on training in ShipConstructor, 3D modelling, and specialized shipbuilding skills with immersive learning experiences. And what better way to learn than with a five-day adventure across the country? 🇨🇦

🏞 Day 1: The group explored the stunning scenery and urban vibe of North Vancouver.

🛳 Day 2: They boarded the St. Roch—the legendary wooden icebreaker that made history by completing the Northwest Passage and circumnavigating North America. The visit sparked inspiration for Genoa’s work on the Canadian Coast Guard’s polar icebreaker project! 🌨

📚 From Arctic exploration and canoeing culture to diving exhibits and maritime history, the team soaked up knowledge at every turn.

🛶 And what’s a Vancouver trip without a ride on the False Creek Ferries? The team ended the day with a scenic ride, lunch, and shopping at Granville Island.

We're flashing back to Friday's launch of the Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS Protecteur at Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards. Genoa has been a key partner on the project since the very beginning and we were proud to share the accomplishment with a few valued members of our team who played important roles. It was an exciting day for all involved!
