Chicks are Coming Next Week!

Our first shipment of layers are coming Wednesday, March 12th!

We are expecting dual purpose brown egg layers. With their unbeatable combination of excellent egg production and robust delicious meat, they are perfect for the backyard flock.

All layers, hybrids and dual purpose birds are sexed as pullets to an 85% accuracy.

Preparing for your Chicks!

- Sanitize! - at least a week before, prepare your coop. Disinfect all surfaces, walls, waterers, feeders and equipment. We recommend VIRKON for this.

- Pre-Warm the area 24-48 hours before your chicks arrive. This gives you a chance to check for cold spots and drafts. Nighttime temps can be quite a bit lower, so this will give you a chance to check nighttime temps and ensure your heating equipment is functioning.

- use an absorbent bedding like wood shavings. Suggestion is for the shavings to be 2-4 inches deep. Do not use newspaper.

- ensure the water is colder than surrounding temperature of brooder. So do not put it directly under the heat lamp.

Feed and water should be offered 24/7 while the chicks are growing.

March checklist for Beekeepers in BC. as provided by the Ministry of Agriculture BC website.

New beekeepers should apply for registration of apiary location(s). Registration forms are available on the Ministry of Agriculture website.
• In warmer parts of the province, bees will be flying intermittently, bringing in pollen.
• When weather permits, take hives apart and clean floor boards. If there are no bees in the bottom brood chamber, remove, sort combs, clean, repair and paint where necessary.
• Check for eggs and brood to confirm a laying queen. Install entrance reducer. Stimulative feeding of syrup may begin or continue. Ensure sufficient pollen stores or provide pollen patties.
• Feed warm, thick syrup. Prepare sugar syrup by adding 3 parts sugar to two parts hot water (some prefer 2:1). If broods disease is detected and antibiotics are required
• When weather permits and bees have resumed flight, test for Varroa mites
• If tracheal mites are suspected, apply formic acid treatments.

Are you looking to raise broiler chickens, or add some laying hens or turkeys to your farm this year? We are an agent for Rochester Hatchery, so we can help! For orders of 25 or more, you can order online or call us 250-348-3243!

- Visit www.rochesterhatchery.com to set up a free account
- Make your chick selections (25 minimum) mix and match breeds if you want
- Request a hatch date
- Select 'pick up at local agent' from the drop box
- Choose 'Buckerfield's - Parksville' as your agent

Once you have completed your order, Rochester will confirm via email. Please keep in mind that your requested hatch date may differ depending on chick availability. Your pick-up and payment date will be scheduled for 2 days after your hatch date in our store. We will email you when the confirmation is received as a reminder!
