Surgery time!! Hello, my name is shadow, and I’m one of the newest intakes at Frankie’s World rat rescue. I’m wondering if you can spare a few dollars to help cover my surgery today? I am having a partial tail amputation for a necrotic wound that I arrived to the rescue with last week. I’m very excited to feel better. Once the dead part of my tail is gone! My brother turbo has a similar wound, but he’s lucky that his is much much smaller, so he might not need to have surgery, which would be amazing! Mine won’t heal on its own, though, and the dead tissue would just get infected and make me very very sick and caused me a lot of pain, so it needs to be removed ❤️🩹. Can’t wait to show you my new tail when I’m done!!!
Pituitary Tumors, likely the 2nd leading cause of death in rats after respiratory disease. Not curable, but life can be prolonged significantly. 2-6 mo might not seem like a lot to you or your vet, but when 6mo is 1/4 of their life expectancy, it MATTERS! That’s like us gaining 20–25 yrs of additional life!! So it’s absolutely worth treating, and ASAP, because if it’s delayed more than a few days, they will likely die. More common in females 18+months, but possible in males & young rats too. The most common type of PT is a prolactinoma, and bromocriptine is a prolactin antagonist. It helps slow/stop tumor growth by opposing its activity. Dexamethasone is a potent steroid, and helps decrease swelling/inflammation surrounding the tumor, which is especially important in the brain which is an enclosed space. You’ll see “classic” signs online, but often you’ll see the things mentioned in this video, and it’ll just be a general sense of “ they’re acting weird, and I can’t explain why”. They have trouble eating until the meds kick in, so feeding them soft foods, such as baby food, oatmeal, soft fruits, etc either through a syringe or off your finger is very important. Sometimes they’ll eat it off a spoon or plate, but often it needs to be put directly up to their mouth. Avoid giving more than a little drop at a time, or anything that could be an easy choking hazard, because part of the lack of coordination involves difficulty chewing/moving tongue/swallowing actions. Hold a water bottle up to them multiple x/day, or offer water through a small syringe. Hold them UPRIGHT while eating/drinking to avoid aspiration! A flat single level enclosure is important for safety, because if they try to climb they may fall and hurt themselves. Usually Dex leads to improvement within hours, followed by steady improvement over the subsequent days while the Bromocriptine builds up, until often no symptoms remain. They’ll seem totally normal…And can remain thi
