Pituitary Tumors, likely the 2nd leading cause of death in rats after respiratory disease. Not curable, but life can be prolonged significantly. 2-6 mo might not seem like a lot to you or your vet, but when 6mo is 1/4 of their life expectancy, it MATTERS! That’s like us gaining 20–25 yrs of additional life!! So it’s absolutely worth treating, and ASAP, because if it’s delayed more than a few days, they will likely die. More common in females 18+months, but possible in males & young rats too. The most common type of PT is a prolactinoma, and bromocriptine is a prolactin antagonist. It helps slow/stop tumor growth by opposing its activity. Dexamethasone is a potent steroid, and helps decrease swelling/inflammation surrounding the tumor, which is especially important in the brain which is an enclosed space. You’ll see “classic” signs online, but often you’ll see the things mentioned in this video, and it’ll just be a general sense of “ they’re acting weird, and I can’t explain why”. They have trouble eating until the meds kick in, so feeding them soft foods, such as baby food, oatmeal, soft fruits, etc either through a syringe or off your finger is very important. Sometimes they’ll eat it off a spoon or plate, but often it needs to be put directly up to their mouth. Avoid giving more than a little drop at a time, or anything that could be an easy choking hazard, because part of the lack of coordination involves difficulty chewing/moving tongue/swallowing actions. Hold a water bottle up to them multiple x/day, or offer water through a small syringe. Hold them UPRIGHT while eating/drinking to avoid aspiration! A flat single level enclosure is important for safety, because if they try to climb they may fall and hurt themselves. Usually Dex leads to improvement within hours, followed by steady improvement over the subsequent days while the Bromocriptine builds up, until often no symptoms remain. They’ll seem totally normal…And can remain thi
THIS VIDEO COULD SAVE YOUR RATS LIFE! Why? Because respiratory disease is the #1 CAUSE OF DEATH in rats, and IT SHOULDN’T BE! There’s a huge MYTH that it’s not often treatable, that “pneumonia is a death sentence”…we have COUNTLESS people reaching out to us, with stories of rats that died because their vets MISLED them and DIDNT treat properly. Vets often mean well, but they simply DO NOT have the knowledge or experience to give quality recommendations. I can’t stress this enough, DO NOT TRUST A VETERINARIAN when it comes to rats. I DONT CARE WHAT THEIR CREDENTIALS ARE, I don’t care that they’re an “exotics specialist”. These titles just give a false sense of trust. Some vets know what they’re doing, or will work with you to learn & figure things out, but 99% WILL NOT! We are not vets, but WE SAVE RATS LIVES, and THEY DONT! PLEASE reach out to us with ANY questions, ANY TIME!! We exist for THIS VERY PURPOSE, to share our knowledge and invaluable experience, to CHANGE THE FUTURE OF HEALTH FOR RATS! We are heartbroken every single day, seeing cases of rats that we know would have likely survived if they had been with us, or if their humans had asked us for advice instead of going to a vet first. Of course we need vets, but WE can teach you what to ask for and how to ADVOCATE for your Rats! We can teach you how to TEACH YOUR VET to be more competent in rat care. They need to be encouraged to actually look things up, ask colleagues, consult resources, TRY THINGS other than euthanasia! Those who do come to us, and suggest our treatment protocols to their vets, save their rats, and teach their vets in the process! PLEASE SPREAD THIS INFORMATION to EVERY RAT HUMAN POSSIBLE!! Watch the video over and over, learn to know the signs, learn that DEXAMETHASONE SAVES LIVES! The fact that almost nobody uses it for resp disease is simply unacceptable. Rats go from gasping, on oxygen, to NORMAL BREATHING, often within HOURS! Yes there are exceptions, but if
I need sponsors! My mom calls me a miracle, but I’m turning out to be quite expensive! As many of you know, I suffered a serious facial injury with 2 jaw fractures a couple months ago. After a miraculous recovery, I’m now left with Malocclusion of my teeth, that need to be trimmed at the vet every two weeks. Mamma M has a lot of experience with Malocclusion and trims 15 sets of teeth every week here at the rescue 😱, but because of my injuries and associated pain, I need to have it done under sedation to make it tolerable. Even with sedation sometimes I reacts in discomfort when my top teeth are touched 🥺. This has been costing Frankie’s World $50 every two weeks, so $100/month. I’m only 1.5yrs old, and plan to live a LONG life, so this will continue for quite a while. Mom typically budgets for $20/month per Rat for care costs, which won’t cut it in my case. I’m looking to find a handful of generous humans that can contribute ANY SMALL amount on a monthly basis to help Mariah pay for my vet bills. Seriously, every $ counts! Whether 1 person sponsors $100, or 100 people sponsor $1, it’s all the same in the end, so how about a few of you work together and contribute what you’d spend on your morning coffee one day a month, to allowing me to continue living a happy and comfortable life ☺️😊. I will be forever grateful, and so will Mamma M! She works SOOO hard to care for all of us, and SAVES the rescue SOOO much money by being able to do many things at the rescue that most others can’t, saving countless vet visits and many thousands of dollars. Sadly though, she can’t do this for me on her own, so we need our awesome vet Dr Jenn to help us out. If you have any questions about my story or situation, comment below, and the team will be happy to answer! They LOVE talking about me 😜😁🥹. Aloe and Vera also known as our Lumpy Ladies, are some of our palliative care rats with tumours that unfortunately can't, or aren't worth removing because they're cancerous and will keep coming back. They've enjoyed a long life and we're trying the best we can to give them as much enrichment in their free roam pen as we can with the time they have left. The girls have lots of dog hide toys that they can solve quicker than any dog ever has to find their favourite snacks! They still love cuddling together and getting attention from mom and we're cherishing every minute of it while we can ❤️

🥹 I have no words Scoobs. Resilient is an understatement. I waited a couple days to post this to not jynx it this time, as we’ve tried to take him off oxygen a couple times before but it didn’t last… but this time it’s real ❤️. He has moved from the incubator back to his cage, and he’s as happy and energetic as ever! From loosing his brother, to then almost dying, loosing 150g, fighting a respiratory virus for a month, then being on what I thought was a lifetime of supplemental oxygen from fibrotic damage from the virus…then a facial surgery WHILE ON OXYGEN!!!… to this. I fight so hard with and for these creatures because they are strong and have an incredible will to live and endure, and far too many give up on them and don’t believe they can recover. I know it’s not true, and Scoobs is the ultimate example of that. Panzer as well. I’m both proud of him for all he’s been through and always staying with the fight, and of myself for continuing to support and encourage him, and using all the knowledge and determination and creativity I have, to keep him alive. We did it Scoobs, we did it. It may not be forever, as he still does have some lasting lung damage and eventually may need oxygen again, but for now, we’re celebrating this MONUMENTAL win 🥇. #resillience #amazinganimals #scoobydoo #ratrescue #rescuerat #transformation #welcomehome #resillientanimals #amazing #beattheodds #ratsareawesome #ratsareamazing #nevergiveup #nakedrat #hairlessrat #ratadesnuda
Miracle Scoobs needs YOUR HELP! Can you donate just $2 to help fund his surgery?! 🙏 He has a suspected early Zymbals gland tumor, a VERY AGRESSIVE and deadly form of cancer. Being hairless, I noticed it early, and we’re hopeful our vet can remove it ALL!! His surgery is more risky because his lungs are compromised after his near death encounter with the respiratory virus that killed his brother Scraggles 💔, but he’s the most resilient and strong rat I know, so I know he’ll be ok. We’ve had A LOT OF SURGERIES and high expenses the last few months, and this week in particular with our rat room air conditioning unit breaking, so we can use any and all help we can get 🙏❤️. His surgery with pathology send out will be around $500. We have raised $100 so far. Can you help us reach our goal and help save Scoobs?! Etransfer or PayPal to [email protected], link in bio:)

WELCOME Skipper, Tack, and Jib! (Comment below if you know what these sailing terms mean 😉 ⛵️). These 3 brothers were surrendered by someone 2 weeks ago. She had been following us on social media for the last few years and had recently acquired these boys from her cousin. They hadn’t been taken care of in the best way, and she herself although having past rat experience, was allergic and her busy lifestyle didn’t allow for the proper care of them. They came to us with quite significant upper respiratory infections that seem like they’ve been present for quite some time unfortunately. Luckily they hadn’t progressed to pneumonia and after a few weeks of antibiotics (Enrofloxacin and Doxycycline) They are significantly better, though not totally symptom free yet. They are THE SWEETEST boys, so social, friendly, kind, and loving. Such big personalities and always want to play and interact. Tack is the rambunctious one of the group, always darting out when he hears me come in the room. Skipper is the snuggly one, really loving his massages. Jib is quiet and reserved, but not shy at all, liking to spend his time burrowing in blanket forts. These fellas would make THE PERFECT rat companions, and if we find the right adopter, they are up for adoption! The challenge is that they are likely close to 2 years old already, and they have respiratory infections that may likely need lifelong meds. For that reason, we are prepared to keep them as permanent sanctuary residents and would be looking for someone to sponsor each of them! However, if you or anyone you know is an experienced rat human and wanting to adopt amazingly sweet senior ratties with some health issues, these are your men!! Their names were itchy, scratchy, and bitey when they came, but we felt they deserved some more fun and loving names, so we went with a sailing theme since it’s summer and I’ve been working on cleaning up my sailboat to get it on the water after a couple years land bound! ❤
(Link below to donate! Every $ counts!) Meet Basil and Luna, 2 super sweet girls with LARGE mammary tumors who need surgery. Luna came back to the rescue last week after having been adopted by a very lovely human, who was having trouble getting Luna’s sister Stella’s teeth trimmed and was coming back to us so I could do that more easily for her. Obviously Luna was going to come along with her bonded sister. Sadly Stella passed away the day she returned to us 😞. She also had a pituitary tumor, it was tragic and we’re all devastated by the sudden loss. Luna still has a buddy, Poptart, who came with her as well, but she misses Stella. Luna had one mass removed from her armpit a couple months ago, but has since grown 3 more in her groin that are causing her trouble walking and will be harder to remove the bigger they get.
Basil has been with us for about 8-9 months now, her and sister Parsley were surrendered when their lovely human had to move back to his home country for an undetermined amount of time and he wanted to make sure they were well taken care of. She had a small mass on her side for the last few months, and we were hoping it would stay small and not require surgery as many of them do…. But unfortunately it started to grow rapidly and now needs to be removed before it gets too massive.
Basil has had her pre-op assessment and is very healthy and cleared for surgery, and Luna is having her assessment this week. We have a surgery slot booked for next Thursday, if Luna is cleared she will go first because hers is more urgent, and then Basil will have the next available date. date.
Please consider donating just a few dollars to these ladies, it doesn’t take much, if everyone who sees this does that, their surgeries will be covered no problem! EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS, truly 🙏. Thank you so much for the continued support of us and the ratties, we appreciate it more than you know ❤️🐁🐀.
