Surgery time!! Hello, my name is shadow, and I’m one of the newest intakes at Frankie’s World rat rescue. I’m wondering if you can spare a few dollars to help cover my surgery today? I am having a partial tail amputation for a necrotic wound that I arrived to the rescue with last week. I’m very excited to feel better. Once the dead part of my tail is gone! My brother turbo has a similar wound, but he’s lucky that his is much much smaller, so he might not need to have surgery, which would be amazing! Mine won’t heal on its own, though, and the dead tissue would just get infected and make me very very sick and caused me a lot of pain, so it needs to be removed ❤️🩹. Can’t wait to show you my new tail when I’m done!!!
Pituitary Tumors, likely the 2nd leading cause of death in rats after respiratory disease. Not curable, but life can be prolonged significantly. 2-6 mo might not seem like a lot to you or your vet, but when 6mo is 1/4 of their life expectancy, it MATTERS! That’s like us gaining 20–25 yrs of additional life!! So it’s absolutely worth treating, and ASAP, because if it’s delayed more than a few days, they will likely die. More common in females 18+months, but possible in males & young rats too. The most common type of PT is a prolactinoma, and bromocriptine is a prolactin antagonist. It helps slow/stop tumor growth by opposing its activity. Dexamethasone is a potent steroid, and helps decrease swelling/inflammation surrounding the tumor, which is especially important in the brain which is an enclosed space. You’ll see “classic” signs online, but often you’ll see the things mentioned in this video, and it’ll just be a general sense of “ they’re acting weird, and I can’t explain why”. They have trouble eating until the meds kick in, so feeding them soft foods, such as baby food, oatmeal, soft fruits, etc either through a syringe or off your finger is very important. Sometimes they’ll eat it off a spoon or plate, but often it needs to be put directly up to their mouth. Avoid giving more than a little drop at a time, or anything that could be an easy choking hazard, because part of the lack of coordination involves difficulty chewing/moving tongue/swallowing actions. Hold a water bottle up to them multiple x/day, or offer water through a small syringe. Hold them UPRIGHT while eating/drinking to avoid aspiration! A flat single level enclosure is important for safety, because if they try to climb they may fall and hurt themselves. Usually Dex leads to improvement within hours, followed by steady improvement over the subsequent days while the Bromocriptine builds up, until often no symptoms remain. They’ll seem totally normal…And can remain thi
THIS VIDEO COULD SAVE YOUR RATS LIFE! Why? Because respiratory disease is the #1 CAUSE OF DEATH in rats, and IT SHOULDN’T BE! There’s a huge MYTH that it’s not often treatable, that “pneumonia is a death sentence”…we have COUNTLESS people reaching out to us, with stories of rats that died because their vets MISLED them and DIDNT treat properly. Vets often mean well, but they simply DO NOT have the knowledge or experience to give quality recommendations. I can’t stress this enough, DO NOT TRUST A VETERINARIAN when it comes to rats. I DONT CARE WHAT THEIR CREDENTIALS ARE, I don’t care that they’re an “exotics specialist”. These titles just give a false sense of trust. Some vets know what they’re doing, or will work with you to learn & figure things out, but 99% WILL NOT! We are not vets, but WE SAVE RATS LIVES, and THEY DONT! PLEASE reach out to us with ANY questions, ANY TIME!! We exist for THIS VERY PURPOSE, to share our knowledge and invaluable experience, to CHANGE THE FUTURE OF HEALTH FOR RATS! We are heartbroken every single day, seeing cases of rats that we know would have likely survived if they had been with us, or if their humans had asked us for advice instead of going to a vet first. Of course we need vets, but WE can teach you what to ask for and how to ADVOCATE for your Rats! We can teach you how to TEACH YOUR VET to be more competent in rat care. They need to be encouraged to actually look things up, ask colleagues, consult resources, TRY THINGS other than euthanasia! Those who do come to us, and suggest our treatment protocols to their vets, save their rats, and teach their vets in the process! PLEASE SPREAD THIS INFORMATION to EVERY RAT HUMAN POSSIBLE!! Watch the video over and over, learn to know the signs, learn that DEXAMETHASONE SAVES LIVES! The fact that almost nobody uses it for resp disease is simply unacceptable. Rats go from gasping, on oxygen, to NORMAL BREATHING, often within HOURS! Yes there are exceptions, but if
I need sponsors! My mom calls me a miracle, but I’m turning out to be quite expensive! As many of you know, I suffered a serious facial injury with 2 jaw fractures a couple months ago. After a miraculous recovery, I’m now left with Malocclusion of my teeth, that need to be trimmed at the vet every two weeks. Mamma M has a lot of experience with Malocclusion and trims 15 sets of teeth every week here at the rescue 😱, but because of my injuries and associated pain, I need to have it done under sedation to make it tolerable. Even with sedation sometimes I reacts in discomfort when my top teeth are touched 🥺. This has been costing Frankie’s World $50 every two weeks, so $100/month. I’m only 1.5yrs old, and plan to live a LONG life, so this will continue for quite a while. Mom typically budgets for $20/month per Rat for care costs, which won’t cut it in my case. I’m looking to find a handful of generous humans that can contribute ANY SMALL amount on a monthly basis to help Mariah pay for my vet bills. Seriously, every $ counts! Whether 1 person sponsors $100, or 100 people sponsor $1, it’s all the same in the end, so how about a few of you work together and contribute what you’d spend on your morning coffee one day a month, to allowing me to continue living a happy and comfortable life ☺️😊. I will be forever grateful, and so will Mamma M! She works SOOO hard to care for all of us, and SAVES the rescue SOOO much money by being able to do many things at the rescue that most others can’t, saving countless vet visits and many thousands of dollars. Sadly though, she can’t do this for me on her own, so we need our awesome vet Dr Jenn to help us out. If you have any questions about my story or situation, comment below, and the team will be happy to answer! They LOVE talking about me 😜😁🥹.
