FLEAS! Lets not forget that fleas are also looking for a warm meal this time of year. These fleas were combed off a very itchy pet today and the pet was started flea prevention right away. Once in the home fleas can be very difficult to get rid of due to their life cycle. 90 % of the infestation is in the environment as eggs and larvae. That is why it is crucial that all pets in the home be treated for a minimum of 3 consecutive months once fleas are seen to break that life cycle. Did you know that pets can also become infected with tapeworms by ingesting infected fleas!? YUCK!

The temperature is dropping and ticks are looking for warm bodies! Ticks are active all year, especially spring and fall so make sure to keep up with your pets prevention throughout the cooler months. This Tick came off a pet after this mornings walk.
Tick tips
1. Tick prevention to kill ticks that find their way on to your pets
2. Tick check your pets after coming inside, lint rollers are a great help
3. Vaccines are available to prevent Lyme disease

Heads up Parry Sound and surrounding areas! We are starting to see more cases of Parvo Virus again! PLEASE vaccinate your puppies and dogs, this is a deadly virus.
Common symptoms of the virus include:
Lethargy.
Loss of appetite.
Vomiting.
Severe, often bloody, diarrhea.
Abdominal pain and bloating.

Doris was a first here for us. She has been struggling to lay eggs so we were able to assist her owner by obtaining a radiograph to better discus her treatment with her exotics vet. How many tortoise eggs can you see?? 👀

We have a Birthday in the clinic! Can anyone guess who’s it is?! 🤣 🥳 What a fun way to start the morning.

When we see a pet with an ear problem we almost always check an ear swab under the microscope. Ear mites are just one of the things we sometimes see. Here is a great video showing a lot of ear mites!

Just because we have had our first snowfall doesn't mean the ticks are gone! We found this guy today alive and full (And missing his touque!!)

Is there Heartworm disease in our area? Definitely!!. Here is the living slide on 1 drop of blood from our latest Heartworm dog. Too many to count microscopic worms swimming among the red blood cells, ready to be picked up by a mosquito.

Pictures tell a story! Yesterday a 9 month old puppy came in for vomiting. Radiographs of her abdomen were recommended. Ever wonder why we take 3 views? The first X Ray lying on her side shows a foreign body. Additional views show the real problem. The white barium we placed in her stomach DID NOT PASS the foreign body. Surgery was needed. This stuffed chew toy made noise, ( you can see the round battery on X Rays).What is amazing is that this puppy was seen to swallow this toy LAST OCTOBER, 2015!. She passed the toys' feathers, but the rest stayed inside until yesterday!!. She is doing well after her surgery and I think is looking a little guilty? So glad her owners let us perform X Rays, otherwise the toy would still be there!
