πŸŽ„πŸΎ Managing Your Pet's Stress and Anxiety Over the Holidays πŸΎπŸŽ„

The holiday season is full of joy, but for our furry friends, it can also be a time of stress and anxiety. From loud noises and bustling guests to changes in routine, Christmas can be overwhelming for pets.

Here are some tips to help keep your pets calm and happy this holiday season:

🏠 Create a Safe Space - Designate a quiet area for your pet to retreat to when things get too chaotic. A cozy bed, soft blankets, and familiar toys can make all the difference.

πŸ•“ Stick to Their Routine - Pets thrive on routine, so try to maintain their regular feeding, playtime, and walks. Consistency helps them feel secure amidst all the holiday excitement.

πŸ• Avoid Overstimulation - While it’s fun to have guests, try to limit the number of new people your pet meets at once. Introduce visitors slowly and make sure your pet has a quiet space to retreat if needed.

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Stay Active - Regular exercise can help your pet burn off excess energy and reduce stress. A good walk or play session can be a great way to keep them calm.

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Calming Products - Consider using calming collars, sprays, or diffusers that release pheromones known to help reduce anxiety. For pets with severe anxiety, speak to your vet about possible solutions, including medications.

🐾 Watch for Signs of Stress - Be on the lookout for signs of stress in your pet, such as excessive barking, drooling, pacing, or hiding. If your pet seems overly anxious, consult with your veterinarian for further advice. Remember, the holidays are for everyone to enjoy, including your pets! ❀️

With a little planning and some extra TLC, your furry companions can have a stress-free holiday season too. πŸŽ…πŸ±

🐾 Hey Blueberries 🐾

The holiday season is upon us!!

With this joyous season comes safety hazards for our pets, so we are dedicating this week’s to pet safety tips to ensure we all have a pawsitively safe Christmas…

πŸŽ„Decorations: Make sure that your Christmas tree is secured in case our canine or feline friends decide to climb it or knock it over! Some pets are tempted to play and chew on tinsel, lights and electrical cords, so keeping these things out of reach along with any chewable/breakable ornaments!

🎁 Gift Wrap: Be cautious with gift wrap and ribbons. Ingesting these materials can lead to serious health issues like linear foreign bodies, which is an emergency situation.

🌷 Holiday Plants: Many plants commonly found during Christmas, like poinsettias, holly and mistletoe can be toxic to pets. Keep them out of reach, or opt for pet safe alternatives.

🍽 Food hazards: Avoid sharing holiday foods with your pets. Some foods like chocolate, nuts and grapes can be harmful. Keep an eye on garbage cans to prevent any scavenging. Ensure that if guests are placing gifts under your tree they let you know if they contain food, such as a box of chocolates, that your pet could potentially get into when you’re not looking!

πŸ‘₯ Guests: Ensure your pets are properly introduced to guests and remind them to be mindful of open doors and gates so your pets don’t make a festive escape!

🎢 Noise and Stress: The holiday season can be noisy and overwhelming. Creating a quiet and safe space for your pets to retreat to will help provide the break they may need from all of the festivities.

Happy Holidays folks!! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call OR text the clinic at 613-264-2689

Happy Monday Blueberries!

With the impending drop in temperatures, we need to ensure we are taking appropriate measures to keep our pets safe and healthy…

Small dogs, senior pets, and short-haired breeds are especially vulnerable to the cold.

❄ Coats and Sweaters are a great option for short-haired breeds or dogs that are particularly sensitive to the cold!

❄ If the temperature dips too low, it’s best to keep your pet indoors. Cats, especially, are more vulnerable to the cold and should be kept inside during extreme winter weather.

❄ Icy sidewalks and roads can cause harm to your pet's paws. They can crack, become dry, or irritated by icy conditions or chemicals used to treat roads and sidewalks. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or paw balm to your dog’s paws to provide a protective barrier against salt and ice. Boots can also protect your pet's paws.

❄ After walks, wipe down your pet’s paws with a damp cloth to remove any salt or ice melt chemicals. This will prevent your pet from licking it off and potentially ingesting harmful substances.

❄ Steer clear of icy patches when walking your dog. The slippery surface can lead to falls and injury, so try to stick to cleared paths.

❄ Limit the amount of time they spend outside during extreme cold spells. Pets can suffer from frostbite or hypothermia if they’re exposed to cold temperatures for too long. If your pet is shivering, seems lethargic, or is reluctant to move, they may be too cold and need to come inside immediately. Ears, tails, and paws, are most susceptible to frostbite in extremely cold weather. Check these areas regularly for signs of redness, blisters, or pale skin.

❄ Keep your pet mentally and physically stimulated indoors. Use toys, puzzle feeders, and treat-dispensing balls to keep your pet engaged. Play fetch in a hallway or have a tug-of-war session with your dog. For cats, try interactive toys like laser pointers or feather wands to keep them active.

❄ Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water. Hydration is just as important in the colder months as in the summer.

🫐 Happy Friday Blueberries! 🫐

The temperature is starting to cool down folks, so lets talk about winter parasite prevention. Whilst it may seem like fleas and ticks are only a concern in the warmer months, in fact, they can be active year-round, even during the cold winters here!

In Perth and much of Ontario, winter temperatures can fluctuate. Mild periods or warmer days (above 0Β°C) provide an opportunity for fleas and ticks to remain active. If there's snow cover, the pests may also hide in warmer areas, such as under the snow or in wooded areas, waiting for the right conditions to emerge.

Whilst ticks and fleas are often associated with outdoor environments, they can also be brought inside by your pets. If you have pets that go outside, even for short periods, they can pick up ticks or fleas on their fur or in their bedding. Once inside, these pests can easily infest your home, making them harder to eradicate.

Fleas and ticks can survive the winter in a dormant state. Ticks may hide in leaf piles, under bark, or in tall grasses, whilst fleas can live in your home, particularly in carpets, bedding, or furniture. Once the temperature rises, they become active again and can start feeding on your pets.

Fleas reproduce rapidly. A single female flea can lay hundreds of eggs, leading to an infestation that can be hard to control. Fleas also cause itching, skin irritation, hair loss, and even more severe reactions like flea allergy dermatitis.

As we know ticks transmit Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. Whilst ticks are most active in spring and fall, they can still transmit diseases in winter months when active.

Don't hesitate to call OR text the clinic if you have any questions, or need to order more parasite prevention!

It's nearly Halloween folks, which means we have to watch that candy!!...

Firstly we would LOVE to see your pets in their β€˜scary’ costumes, please drop them in the comments below or email them to [email protected]

Whilst Halloween is a fun celebration it can be a dangerous one for our dogs! Chocolate contains methylxanthines, theobromine and caffeine which are highly toxic for dogs. When a dog ingests chocolate it can cause the below symptoms:

πŸŽƒ Vomiting
πŸŽƒ Diarrhea
πŸŽƒ Hyperactivity
πŸŽƒ Tremors
πŸŽƒ Seizures
πŸŽƒ Racing heart rate
πŸŽƒ Death, in severe cases.

If you suspect your dog has ingested chocolate you should call your vet as soon as possible, being able to identify what exactly your dog ate and how much it ate can be very helpful in determining the level of toxicity. The first step of treatment is to remove as much chocolate from the dog’s body as possible. We can do this by inducing vomiting or using absorbents such as activated charcoal to bind the chocolate and keep it from being absorbed by the GI tract. For many dogs removing the undigested chocolate will avoid any severe symptoms and just result in an upset stomach however in more severe cases hospitalization and intravenous fluids may be required!

If you have any questions surrounding chocolate toxicity, don’t hesitate and give the clinic a call on 613-264-2689!
