❄️🐾 Winter Weight Management for Cats and Dogs! 🐾❄️

During winter months pets, just like their humans tend to become more sedentary, which can lead to unwanted weight gain. They may struggle with staying active when the days are shorter and the weather is chilly! Whilst there is a tendency to lose some of that weight during the summer months they may not lose it all, such that there is a net gain year over year. This can lead to health issues such as joint pain, heart problems and diabetes.

1. Your pet needs daily exercise to stay fit. If your dog is used to outdoor walks, try to keep their routine consistent, even if it means bundling up and going for more frequent but shorter walks. For some pets, indoor activities like dog puzzles or climbing structures can mimic the physical challenge of walking outside. For cats, try setting up an enrichment area with climbing trees, scratching posts, or a few cat-friendly toys that encourage natural play; some cats may even like to play fetch!

2. Avoid feeding extra treats, including table scraps etc. Treats/extras should not exceed 10% of their daily calorie intake, or their diet as a whole will become unbalanced as well as contribute to weight gain. Making them work for their treats is a great idea. Things like treat balls, puzzles or hiding treats around the house can help burn those extra calories! Low calorie treats are also a great option, swap out high calorie treats for carrots, green beans, or small amounts of low fat meat.

3. Weighing your pet every 2-4 weeks will help to catch any weight gain early and allow for feeding adjustments. Metabolism may also slow down in the winter, along with the decrease in exercise, makes it so much easier to gain weight. So it’s very important to match the number of calories fed to the calories being used. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian for guidance on calorie calculations!

Excess weight can lead to several health problems for both cats and dogs. There was a study done years ago in dogs comparing ideal weight to slightly overweight littermates. The trim dogs lived almost 2 years longer than the slightly overweight littermates! So that little bit of extra winter weight may not be as benign as we’d like to think!

🐾 Happy Monday Blueberries 🐾

Most of you may have noticed we often have an extra member of staff in the exam room with your pet! Our Exam Room Assistants (ERAs) play a vital role in patient and client care here at Blueberry Creek.

Here’s some insight into their role…

⭐️ Preparing the Exam Room: Ensuring the exam room is clean, stocked, and ready for each appointment, including preparing any necessary tools or equipment.

⭐️ Assisting the Veterinarian and Technicians: Helping the veterinarian with examinations, procedures, and treatments. They may hold animals & help position them for exams.

⭐️ Client Interaction: Greeting clients and their pets, ensuring they are comfortable, and taking their history, such as concerns, symptoms, and medical background.

⭐️ Client Education: Offering guidance to pet owners on topics like medication instructions, post-care advice, general and preventative pet health care.

⭐️ Managing Documentation: Updating patient records, ensuring that medical histories, medical files, and treatments are accurately logged.

⭐️ Post-Visit Care: Helping pet owners schedule follow-up appointments or ensure they have everything needed for home care.

In essence, they ensure that both pets and their owners feel comfortable, while assisting the veterinary team in providing high quality healthcare in a caring and compassionate environment! 💙

🩺🐾 Technician Thursday - Surgical Assistant 🐾🩺

Our technicians play a critical role in animal healthcare, especially in the operating room!

When your pet requires surgery, the surgical team includes not only the surgeon but also skilled technicians who assist in various ways to ensure a smooth and safe procedure.

Here’s how our technicians support your pet during surgery:

🐶 Pre-Surgical Prep: Before the surgery begins, technicians, with the help of vet assistants, are responsible for preparing the operating room. This includes ensuring the right tools are ready, and making sure the surgical team has everything they need for a successful procedure.

🐱 Anesthesia Monitoring: Technicians are highly trained to monitor anesthesia throughout the surgery. They ensure that your pet remains safe under anesthesia, adjusting the levels of anesthesia as needed and keeping a close eye on vital signs like heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure.

🐶 Assisting the Surgeon: During the surgery, technicians are right by the surgeon’s side, handing them the appropriate instruments, assisting with suturing, and sometimes even helping to maintain surgical field sterility. Their steady hands and quick reflexes make them invaluable in the surgical room!

🐱 Patient Care After Surgery: Once the surgery is complete, technicians monitor your pet as they wake up from anesthesia. They keep a close watch on vital signs, ensure your pet is comfortable, and assist in pain management.

🐶 Post-Surgical Support and Education: After surgery, technicians help ensure your pet is recovering well. They then provide advice on post-op care, such as managing medications, preventing infection, and advising you on activity restrictions.

Technicians are highly trained professionals who work hard to keep your pets safe, comfortable, and cared for during surgical procedures. Their expertise makes a world of difference in your pet’s recovery and overall health!

We’re so grateful for the dedicated technicians who make surgeries smoother for both pets and their owners! 🙌🐾

Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), are often the first ones to respond when a crisis hits, and their job is to stabilize your pet, assess their condition, and provide life-saving interventions.

What does an RVT do in an emergency?

💉 Immediate Assessment and Triage - The first step in emergency care is triage. RVT’s assess your pet’s vital signs right away, checking their heart rate, breathing, temperature, and level of consciousness. This allows them to prioritize care based on the severity of the situation and start treating the most critical conditions immediately.

🔬 Advanced Diagnostics - When your pet is in distress, we don’t have time to waste. RVTs are trained to run diagnostic tests quickly, such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and blood work, to determine the cause of your pet’s symptoms. This allows the veterinary team to make an accurate diagnosis and start the right treatment right away.

⚡ Life-Saving Interventions - In emergencies, every second counts. RVTs administer emergency medications, fluids, oxygen therapy, and even perform CPR when necessary. Whether it's treating a trauma injury, poisoning, or respiratory distress, they are equipped to handle life-threatening situations until the veterinarian can provide further care.

🩺 Monitoring and Support - Once your pet is stable RVTs monitor vital signs and provide supportive care, ensuring your pet remains stable while undergoing treatment. They communicate with the veterinarian, updating them on progress and any changes in your pet’s condition.

Why Emergency Care Matters:

Pets don’t always show signs of illness right away, and emergencies can happen unexpectedly. Whether it’s a car accident, sudden vomiting, a poisoning incident, or difficulty breathing, an RVT is prepared to respond quickly and accurately to give your pet the best chance at recovery.

💡 Know the Signs:

Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
Severe vomiting or diarrhea
Sudden lethargy or collapse
Uncontrollable bleeding
Trauma or injury

🩺Welcome to Technician Thursday folks 🩺

At Blueberry Creek our Registered Veterinary Technicians are masters of many skills, so we would like to highlight their skills each week!

This week we would like to talk about ultrasound-guided cystocentesis!
Cystocentesis is a quick and minimally invasive procedure used to collect urine directly from your pet's bladder with a needle. By using ultrasound guidance, we can ensure that the needle is precisely placed, minimizing discomfort and maximizing accuracy.

Why might your pet need an ultrasound-guided cystocentesis?

✔️ Accurate Urine Samples: This method provides a clean, uncontaminated sample, which is crucial for diagnosing urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder stones, or other urinary conditions.

✔️ Precise Placement: The ultrasound allows us to visualize the bladder in real-time, ensuring the needle is correctly positioned for optimal results.

✔️ Diagnosis of Infection: It helps identify UTIs or detect abnormal substances like blood or crystals in the urine.

✔️ Monitoring Health: This procedure is also used to monitor ongoing conditions such as kidney disease, bladder issues, or overall urinary health.

How is it done? Using ultrasound, we’ll guide the needle into the bladder, collecting the urine sample quickly and safely. The procedure typically takes just a few minutes, and your pet will be monitored closely for their comfort and well-being.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call OR text us at 613-264-2689 💙

Happy Blueberries!!

Fleas and ticks can still pose a risk to your pets during the winter months!! Whilst it’s true that the cold weather slows ticks down, they can still thrive outdoors AND indoors. Which means our furry companions could still be at risk of flea and tick bites during winter walks or snuggling by the fire!

🐾 Fleas can infest your home, hiding in carpets, bedding, and furniture, even when it's cold outside.

🐾 Ticks can remain active during milder days, especially in wooded or grassy areas, and they can spread diseases like Lyme disease.

🐾 Continue using flea and tick preventatives year-round, as they offer essential protection.

🐾 Regularly check your pets after outdoor activities.

🐾 Keep your pet’s living space clean and vacuum frequently to prevent indoor flea infestations.

If you haven't already, check your pet’s parasite prevention stock at home, if you need more don’t hesitate to call OR text us at 613-264-2689 💙

🐾 Welcome to “Veterinary Machine of the Month” 🐾

Today we would like to highlight our ultrasound machine!!

At Blueberry Creek we use the latest ultrasound technology to take a closer look at what’s happening inside your pet's body.

Ultrasounds are a non-invasive, pain-free diagnostic tool that helps us identify and monitor various health conditions, including:

✔️ Organ Health: We can evaluate the size, shape, and function of organs like the liver, kidneys, and bladder.

✔️ Tumors & Cysts: Early detection of growths or abnormal masses to guide further treatment.

✔️ Heart Issues: Ultrasounds help us assess heart function and detect conditions like heart disease.

✔️ Pregnancy & Reproductive Health: Monitoring pregnancies and checking for any reproductive concerns.

✔️ Digestive Problems: We can spot issues like foreign objects or inflammation in the gastrointestinal system.

Ultrasounds provide valuable real-time images, allowing us to diagnose conditions earlier, plan effective treatments, and provide the best care possible for your furry companions!

Best of all? The process is quick, safe, and painless for your pet, they will just need to relax whilst we perform the ultrasound!

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact us at 613-264-2689 💙🐾
