It might be the most important question we ask during a Purebred of Interest feature because we steadfastly believe that there are no bad qualities in carefully bred purebred dogs, only poorly matched owners and dogs.

PWD owners, who should NOT own this breed? What quality could be a "deal breaker" for the owner who didn't do their homework, or, put another way, what qualities do you think a potential owner should have that will make a Portuguese Water Dog a good fit for them?

Factoid: The first brush with near-extinction for the Portuguese Water Dog came in the 1930s when the radio and other technological advances made the dogs redundant among fishermen who for centuries had relied on them to carry communications between boats, retrieve fish that had come loose from hauling lines, fetch floats, and guard boats. By the mid 1970s, there were just twenty-five Water Dogs left in the world, and twelve of them were in the United States.

Further trouble came in the mid 1970s, but not because of the Portuguese Revolution (also known as the Carnation Revolution) which overthrew the authoritarian regime of the Estado Novo. It was the death of Vasco Bensaude in 1975 that threw the breed into harm’s way. The wealthy shipping magnate who had taken such a deep interest in PWDs forty years before had entrusted the remaining eighteen dogs from his Algarbiorum Kennels to a noted PWD breeder in Portugal. For unfathomable reasons, and we hope we're wrong on this - the breeder put down every one of these dogs which effectively erased the line in its native country.

In 1972, sixteen breed admirers gathered in New Canaan, Connecticut to form the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America and create a breeding program, and it was through their efforts that a mere ten years later, the American population had grown to more than 650 dogs.

The breed is in good shape today!

People can be very confused when it comes to understanding what socialization of puppies is. Socialization is about dogs learning to interact with their environment in acceptable ways.

Northsky's Gift of the Moon-Boo, had a pretty good weekend at the Peterborough and District Obedience Club Trials.
Saturday he won 1st place in his Novice trial completing his CD Title. He also had the highest score of the day winning the High in Trial ribbon!

Sunday he took 1st place again in Novice A Obedience, and also took 1st and 3rd in his Rally trials.
