Our goal is to reduce barriers to ensure support reaches those individuals and families in our community who may be experiencing hardships beyond their control that impacts their furry friends. National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week takes place during the first full week of November in recognition of the shelters that provide care to animals across the world.
Peterborough Humane Society is an open admission, For Life, organization; and the largest shelter in Peterborough County. All animals in our care receive veterinary care, vaccinations, are microchipped, and are spayed/neutered prior to being adopted.
This National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week we would like to recognize the incredible staff, volunteers, supporters and donors that make this vital work possible. Together, we can all better animal wellness. Remember adopt, don't shop.💛

FIV in Cats 🐱
Turbo is one of our amazing cats available for adoption, who happens to be FIV positive. Jessica T, Animal Enrichment & Behaviour Coordinator at PHS breaks down some of the misconceptions around FIV.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is an autoimmune disorder, it reduces the ability of the cat's immune system to respond to other infections.
❌Cats with FIV have shorter life spans.
Cats with FIV can live just as long as non-infected cats as long as they are well-cared for. It’s important to keep FIV cats indoors to avoid viruses, bacteria or other diseases found outside.
❌FIV positive cats can't live with other cats.
The primary mode of transmission for FIV is through bite wounds from an infected cat. Households where all cats are fixed, remain indoors, and live peacefully pose little risk of FIV transmission.
❌FIV can be transmitted to humans.
No. FIV is specific to cats. Only cats can get FIV from other infected cats.
✔FIV positive cats are deserving of loving homes!
Just like any other cat, FIV positive cats make great companions and would love a furever home to call their own.
