Well, today was a sad day for the Kiwanis Ptbo Snack Bar as we closed up for the very last time. Yes, I said last time the snack bar is being torn down and not being replaced. We thank you all for visiting us when you came to the zoo. We will miss seeing all of you!!

It is with great sadness that the staff of Riverview Park and Zoo announce the passing of our Capybara, Pablo. He will be greatly missed by our community.

The Park and Zoo would like to extend their gratitude for the public’s continuous support and appreciation of Pablo.

Lost a wagon that our staff uses to take the garbage and recycling to the dumpsters. It was left at the dumpsters at the entrance to the water treatment plant. If you took it because you thought it was free please return it to the Kiwanis Ptbo Snack Bar

Who loves Capybara's? ... We definitely do! 💙

Capybara's are the largest rodents in the world and can even weigh as much as a human adult! They have many aquatic adaptions such as partially webbed feet and similar to a hippopotamus, they can keep their eyes, ears and nostrils above water when swimming. Capybara's can even hold their breath for up to 5 minutes!

Our Capybara, Pablo, is a favourite amongst visitors and likes to come out on especially warm days! ☀️

Anyone know the difference between a Barbary Sheep's horn and a Caribous antler? ... Horn's are made out of keratin, the same material our fingernails and hair is made out off while antlers are made out of bone! Also, horn's do not fall off yearly, unlike antlers. Instead, a Barbary Sheep's horn will continue to grow throughout their lifetime!

Here at the zoo, we have 3 Barbary Sheep named Glenda, Brenda and Dominic! 💙

Sniff sniff! 🦌

Ever wonder why our caribou sometimes don't have antlers when you come to visit? That's because their antlers fall of and regrow yearly! To help with the growth of their new antlers, caribou have a soft, velvety covering that contains blood vessels, skin and soft fur. This velvet allows nutrients and blood to flow into the newly forming bone underneath! Once the antlers are fully grown, caribou will scrape the velvet off using trees and rocks.

Happy from the collared peccaries here at the Riverview Park and Zoo! The peccaries are one of the newer additions to the RPZ family and these little guys find themselves right at home!

While they look like pigs, the collared peccary is not considered a pig but rather a relative of the pig. Our three peccaries are rescues that come to us all the way from Texas!

Did you know that when you purchase food and or beverages at the Kiwanis Ptbo Snack Bar you can round up your bill to the next closest dollar amount to be donated to the new train. Last year with your help we raised over $2500 for the new train initiative!!

Choo choo! 🚂 As we continue to raise money to replace our miniature train, the 2nd edition train puzzle is now available for $20 at the gift shop, open everyday from 10am to 3pm.

Our miniature train ride is an 1860 locomotive replica, first established in 1974. The train track is over 2 kilometers and the ride is approximately 10 minutes long.

Together we've already reached $250,000 toward the new train ride! 🚂

Sorry everyone the Kiwanis Ptbo Snack Bar will be closed on Sunday, May 28th as we are having repairs to our fry vent done. We will reopen on Monday, May 29th from 10 to 3 with all our frys and burgers and all your other favourite treats!

Gift Shop: 10:00am to 3:00pm
Snack Bar: 10:00am to 5:00pm
Splash Pad: 8:30am to 7:00pm

Our students are ready for a fun and safe summer at RPZ!

The Park and Zoo employs over 20 students each summer. These post-secondary students are hired as part of our train, education and guest services, horticulture, park and zoo maintenance, as well as animal care teams 🐾

If you see our students during your visit be sure to say hello!

Fun Run Fun Fact Friday: Meerkats are much smarter than they look. A study at St Andrews University, Scotland (2012) found meerkats in the wild use complex coordinated behaviour to learn new tasks, which rivals that of chimps, baboons, dolphins and even humans. They were able to solve foraging puzzles to access food with help from their group but also a bit of independent thought. Clever little meerkats!

This summer’s Riverview Park and Zoo Fun Run and Walk will support the refurbishment of the outdoor Meerkat enclosure and exhibit.

We have raised $5,000 so far towards our total $20,000 fundraising goal for the project. The hope is that the 2023 Fun Run and Walk will raise $5,000 or more, bringing our new balance for the project to over $10,000!

These upgrades will include a new screened structure, enhanced glass viewing areas, enrichment elements, and meerkat-friendly plantings and landscaping. Follow along to see updates on this project. - DP

Well everyone where did the summer go? We are thankful for all of you who came to the snack bar over the summer. After Monday we will be only open on weekends from 10 to 4 until Thanksgiving weekend. As we get later into the month we will have a limited menu as our goal is to have zero food waste at the end of the season.
