🛑 No Jumping Please! 🛑
This month, we’re focusing on teaching dogs how to greet people politely without jumping! One of the best ways to achieve this is with our “Sit Nice to Be Petted” game adding in motion.
🐾 Why do we teach it?
• Prepares your dog for greeting strangers while out on daily walks.
• Reinforces that sitting to be petted earns them attention, not jumping.
🐕 How do we do it?
1. Have a helper your dog knows, standing about 30’ apart from you.
2. Have your dog sit by your side.
3. When they look at you, say “Let’s go” and walk towards your helper together.
4. Before your dog even thinks about jumping, say “Yes” and reward!
5. Turn around and reset for another round – repeat 3 times.
By now, your dog will focus on you, realizing that not jumping gets them a reward! 🙌
6. On the fourth round, stop in front of your helper. If your dog stands calmly, give 1 treat; if they sit, give 5! If they jump, walk away.
7. Once your dog sits without being asked, reward them with several treats. While you feed them, have your helper quietly pet your dog.
8. Repeat this a few times so your dog learns to automatically sit when greeting people.
With practice, your dog will master polite greetings, keeping all four paws on the ground!

No Jumping!
Today we will be chatting about the most overlooked elements of teaching a dog not to jump on people.
Bring your questions, pull up a chair and hold a warm cup of beverage of your choice!
Teaching your dog not to jump up is a fundamental skill that can significantly impact their ability to greet people politely, both at home and in public. Many dogs naturally jump up when they’re excited, as they seek attention and connection. While it might seem harmless or even cute when they’re small, this behavior can become problematic or even unsafe as they grow.
Why Start with Yourself?
Dogs often learn patterns based on their most familiar interactions—starting with you. When you consistently reinforce calm behavior and discourage jumping, your dog will begin to associate all greetings with staying grounded. By focusing on teaching your dog not to jump on you, you’re setting the groundwork for them to extend this behavior to others. Dogs learn through repetition and association, so practicing with you ensures they understand the behavior is expected in all situations.
Key Strategies to Stop Jumping
1. Ignore the Jumping: One of the most effective ways to curb jumping is to withhold attention when your dog jumps up. This means turning away, not making eye contact, and waiting for your dog to settle before offering any affection or acknowledgment. Jumping often happens because dogs want attention, so ignoring the behaviour can be a strong message.
2. Reinforce Four Paws on the Ground: As soon as your dog has all four paws on the ground, immediately reward them with attention or a treat. Timing is essential here—your dog needs to associate keeping their paws on the ground with getting what they want: your attention.
3. Teach an Alternative Behavior: Giving your dog a job when greeting someone, like sitting or going to a designated spot, can redirect their energy away from jumping. You can teach them to sit as soon as someone approaches or have them wait calmly before they’re allowed to greet. This is where consistency really pays off.
Why This Helps with Others
When your dog understands that jumping doesn’t get the desired result, they’l
