When working with a nervous or hyper social dog who reacts (barks/ lunges/ etc) to people, dogs, cars or anything else it’s important to give lots of space between you and whatever they are reacting too. It’s normal for dogs to have big feelings about different stimuli and in different situations. The key is giving enough space that your dog feels comfortable, then building from there. Like most things in life it takes time and consistency, but it is so rewarding to see your dog make progress and to have that trust and clear communication between you and your dog. 💜🐾

Practicing a little “stay” session while we wait for our friends to arrive for small breed play group.
Doing a lot of movement close to your dog and rewarding them for not moving is a great way to make sure they understand what we are looking for when we teach Stay. We can add duration and distance once the cue becomes more solid. 💜🐾

If you have more then 1 dog at home it’s important to do training one on one with each dog so it’s easier for the dog to learn and focus, and easier for you to get the timing of your reward right. Once the behaviour that your focusing on becomes super solid you can add in distractions such as the other dog. 😻
Nakita has become more reactive, she has some big feelings about seeing other dogs if they are too close to us. I want to help her through this and to feel more comfortable and for her to know that she is safe, even when other dogs are around.
My plan today was to go to the soccer fields where there are often other dogs and people so we could practice desensitization and do some counter conditioning (watching the dogs and Nakita checking in with me at a safe distance. Nakita decides how far away she wants to be). Unfortunately there were no other people or dogs hanging out today so we switched up our plan and did some fun agility stuff using the bleachers.
Reactivity is something that a lot of dogs and their humans struggle with so you are not alone, it is possible to work through this issue. 💜🐾
