If we do NOT post an available litter that means we do not have pups available at this time. We breed once a year give or take what Mother Nature gifts us with.

Let's get real for a second.

The world often paints a picture that dogs who live together are best friends and do everything together.

This is just not true. Many many many multidog household utilize management in different situations to allow dogs personal space to enjoy things such as:

- feeding time
- chew time
- play time
- attention time

This. Is. Normal.

Just because someone utilizes management, doesn't mean their dogs don't enjoy each other's company or have fun together. It just means that there are certain activities that they prefer to do on their own.

And I will tell you firsthand that implementing safe space zones and time apart can be so beneficial to the relationship between two dogs.

Think about it-- do you enjoy doing every single activity that you do at home with your spouse, family, or sibling RIGHT there? I don't think so.

So let's normalize management between dogs who live together!!

Thank you responsible breeders.

There sadly isn't much of a voice for responsible breeders. They often get grouped into the category of backyard breeders or puppy mills, but they are so much more than that. Thank you responsible breeders. Thank you for not being part of the problem, but actually being part of the solution. I can guarantee you that if every breeder followed the guidelines of responsible breeders, "overpopulation" would not be a concern.

It pains me to have clients who come in and are so stressed and concerned about their dogs having one hair out of place. They worry we will judge them because they show and breed dogs and in the past they have been harrassed by the public. I usually just laugh and ensure them that a little dirt means they are loved and having a good time outside. Trust me, I have an English Setter and keeping him show quality groomed everyday would be torture to me and him. They are expected to always be perfect in the eye of the public, because if not a snood comment is likely to be made about their purebred dog. I, and even the clinic I work at, have been harrassed twice this week for supporting responsible breeders. I can't imagine the harrassment some breeders face, I know a few that try to keep the fact that they breed hidden from the public because they are scared of what the public will think.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good mixed breed dog. I work with tons of them everyday and care for each and every one of them the same. Each day I come home and worry about every mixed breed dog I treated that day the same as every purebred dog. I support shelters everyday at work and there are many situations where a rescue dog may be the best fit for you family.

However, there is nothing quite like a dog from a responsible breeder. That dog comes to you from a loving breeder who invested so much time, emotion, funds and research into each puppy that it would shock you. They spend their lives conserving a breed and making it better. That breeder can tell you everything about their personalities, what their traits and quirks will be, and what they were purposefully bred to do. They care about the placement of each puppy, often placing them into the homes themselves based on purpose and personality of each puppy, rather than letting the new owners pick out which one looked cutest online. These puppies go into homes fully vaccinated, with all required health clearances needed. They go into homes already house trained and crate trained to ensure easy transition for the new homes. These responsible breeders keep track of the puppies until they grow old and pass. They want to know about each and every health concern that they have throughout life so that they may alter their breeding program to avoid health concerns in the future. These breeders even make you sign a contract saying that if you can't keep the dog, no matter the age, you will return it to them so that the dog does not end up in a shelter. The list goes on and on.

The next time you meet a RESPONSIBLE breeder, thank them, ask them about their breed, and buy them a drink (trust me they need it 😉).

Our pup homes are invited to join our private family group where we share information and fun.
It is up to the individual family how involved they want to be in this group, however most who are ‘regulars’ find it a great resource/family. We are engaged with our homes as much as they want us to be, we prefer to stay in touch and be a lifetime support for you and one of our pups.

Presently we are doing a Secret SantaPaws for anyone who’s wanted to participate and have their pup exchange gifts with other pups. We are fortunate to have members of our amazing MGR family who organize this and other events for our families and their pups. We encourage it and partake in as many things as we can with everyone.

We are a family at MGR.

Another question… do our dogs live with us? The puppies? How are they raised?

We rear the pups in our home and all of our dogs live with us in our home as they are considered family members.
They receive round the clock care until they head off with you to their new families/homes. Every effort is made to ensure they receive neuro stimulus very early on in their lives so handled daily of course. They are given sleep, living and play areas appropriate to their age/stage of development. Safe, warm, clean and secure. Lots of new things to see and learn as they develop as well. You could refer to Puppy Culture as a reference, we combine a number of rearing frameworks that have the same basis.

We complete Health Clearances laid out by the OFA for the Golden Retriever breed.

Our dogs meet these clearance standards as recommended for the breed. We also utilize DNA clearances through PawPrint Genetics to date, to clear for all available genetic diseases/conditions. As newer tests become available we do our best to continue to add those through their database.

The OFA created the CHIC Program by partnering with participating parent clubs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds.

We’ll post here to answer multiple requests to answer some questions of us:

We are preservation hobby breeders, we breed infrequently and to preserve the Golden Breed to its written standard. Please have a look at the attached link as we find the American club does a better job illustrating and explaining the Golden Retriever.

Looks like we have a girl who’s come in season earlier than expected. One we will hopefully get bred. What does that mean… we will hopefully have some pups available to go to homes in April. If I’ve been in touch with you and you want a pup for this timeframe please stay in touch (and be patient it’s an art and a science this dog breeding). Send all the positives and a little luck for a February litter arrival.

Goldens are affected so much so by these habits that many veterinarians still push (its old school and much of it taught in their education)… using modified spays and neuters are the way to go and if not delaying until well after maturity for the health benefit of the dog.
If you love them you’ll do the best by them.

Keep them safe

Keep them safe

As the holidays near, we are seeing a lot of festive home decorations as we patrol the neighborhoods and visit with pet owners in need of our services.

While these decors are all lovely and seasonal (and some of the baked goods smell delicious) - please don’t forget that many of these plants, foods and decorations, are unsafe, or even quite dangerous for pets.

These hazards range from chocolate and bread, to tinsel and tree fertilizer, all the way to mistletoe and poinsettias!

Our good friends/colleagues at MSPCA-Angell have put together this great list of Holiday Hazards, in an effort to keep your pets safe and your holidays without incident. It is a worth-read as you prepare your homes for the holiday season.

Please also consider free-roaming cats and wildlife, when decorating and planting outdoors. Animals are curious by nature, which can place them in unknowingly precarious positions. Please report any animals to us that appear sick or injured.

In the event that your pet has ingested something unsafe, or even if you suspect that your pet has gotten into something harmful, please do not hesitate to call your veterinarian, or one of the outstanding emergency veterinary hospitals nearest to our community. We have provided some of these important phone numbers and addresses, just in case – but our hope is that no one needs them.

Perhaps you can print this page and keep it nearby as we further enter and coast through the holiday season.

Our mission, at Dedham Animal Control, is to keep animals safe, and keep our community informed and connected to helpful and vital resources.

Ever wonder why we don’t agree to early altering? This is some of the why.

Ever wonder why we don’t agree to early altering?
This is some of the why.

“These two boys are from the same parents, boy on the left was paediatric neutered and the other has stayed intact. As you can see, the development the right pup has compared to the left is undeniable, from his skull width, to his chest and shoulders.
This is the development pups will lose out on when desexing before full maturity.”
