October is RVT Month and we have the pleasure of working with some of the best in the business! It takes very special humans to be able to comfort and care for sick pets in the small animal clinic one day and then be able to do Fresh Checks and Calf Start the next. Our RVTs shine in all aspects of their roles. Please join us in celebrating these amazing RVTs!

CALF START PROGRAM - THEN & NOW

When we rolled out the Calf Start program, we had high hopes that we would be able to provide a service to our producers that would be cost effective and time saving for them and would pay off with improvements in the heifer calves making their way into the dairy herds. The following is a comparison of data from our herds that have been on the program for more than two years. It is a high level look at how these herds did in their first year compared to their most current year. We are thrilled with the results.

The following is the average data collected from 14 herds who have previously been, or are currently on the calf start program.

Percent of calves with a Total Protein ranked “Good or Excellent”:
-75% Improvement ⬆️

Average Total Protein:
-Increased from an average of 5.7g/dL to 6.1g/dL ⬆️

Average Daily Gain:
-Increased from an average of 1.83 lbs/day to 1.96 lbs/day ⬆️

Percent of calves doubling their birth weights by weaning:
-60% Improvement ⬆️

Percent of mortalities:
-37% less mortality ⬇️

Congratulations to our RVTs who administer the program. Jessica, Amanda and Jennifer, you are making a difference to these calves and these farms.

Livestock Veterinary Services is delighted to welcome Dr. Emilie Belage to the team.

Dr. Emilie Belage is originally from Calgary and has a Masters in Epidemiology from the University of Guelph. Her thesis was on milking management, barriers to the adoption of pre-milking practices and its relationship with udder health and SCC. The project was part of the first National Dairy Study done in 2015 that helped benchmark production, health and welfare of Canadian dairy herds. Following her Masters, she pursued her DVM at Michigan State University and graduated in 2021. After graduation, Emilie returned to Canada and worked at a large animal practice in Brooks, AB, before joining LVS. Emilie has a passion for cow-calf medicine, surgery and bull fertility and enjoys working with cattle producers. She is looking forward to meeting and working with the clients of LVS.

In her spare time, Emilie enjoys hiking with her dog DaVinci, playing women’s hockey and baking bread.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Emilie when you see her on your farms in the coming months.
