Something to think about... so don’t look at me like I’m crazy!! Jk lol
🚨 BREAKING NEWS!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Organs move.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You read that right!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can’t see or feel an organ to evaluate its function and mobility, so how do we know when an organ has lost its function and mobility?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As osteopaths, we check the spinal segments. The organs have neurological pathways communicating to the spine their individual function. A kidney, liver or diaphragm in dysfunction would translate to loss of mobility to spinal segments in a group, and each spinal segment has been assigned an organ to represent.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An organ is capable of moving a spinal segment length during every stride, and inspiration/expiration of the diaphragm.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🛑 Consider the kidney for example - It moves on the psoas of the horse, the smallest slips or trauma that causes a pain cascade, muscle contraction in the hind end, spells trouble for the function of the kidney. The loss of mobility in the kidney in turn, affects everybody's processes associated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We can further discuss how a pull back can affect the stomach and diaphragm, and then then the whole horse's systems by the force of the setback. The horse sets back, sending the stomach with force against the diaphragm. The inspiration/expiration of the horse and any compromise of mobility in that organ will affect breathing, pH of the body, digestion, mastication and the neurology of the sympathetic/ parasympathetic pathways communicating with the spine.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just like humans, our horses are complex systems that interact with each other. Trauma no matter how small can have a greater impact on the whole body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When looking to gain that competitive edge, thinking about going deeper than the symptom of what we see and what we feel is often necessary to get to the root cause.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mobility is the health and vitality of the horse. Mobility is #1!
