Our general policies (as of April 5th, 2022)

1. We are a Canadian non profit, volunteer-run organization and we have no paid staff.

Ziggy's Rescue is registered non-profit society
committed to help save Canadian dogs and puppies by working with various rescues in central Canada, helping them place unwanted dogs from more isolated communities All our dogs are placed in foster homes on Vancouver Island. We don’t have a shelter or kennels. We only rehome and rescue Canadian dogs.

2. Our adoption fee is $800, this included the f

irst round of vaccinations and spay or neuter. Exceptions may apply for senior dogs. The adoption fee is subject to change.

3. Money collected through adoption fees goes immediately back into the rescue, including dog food, medical care, transportation, etc.

4. We often don’t know many details about the background of our dogs. The information we do know about the dogs will be included with their Facebook profile and/or on our website

5. With very few exceptions, it is our policy not to adopt any dog into a home without a fully fenced yard. A fenced yard is extra protection for the safety of our dogs.

6. With very few exceptions, it is our policy not to adopt any dog into a home with children under 5 years of age. Our decision will depend on the dog’s age and history, as well as the applicant’s experience.

7. With very few exceptions, it is our policy not to adopt any dog to tenants. We know this may frustrate and upset many people, but we never know when a landlord may sell the property (for example). The available rentals allowing dogs on Vancouver Island are extremely limited. We need to ensure a stable home for the dogs we place.

8. Our application process consists of:
- Filling out an application online, which we then review

- An initial phone interview with one of our volunteers
- A home visit (in person or through Zoom, depending on your location) where we check the security of your fencing, as well as any areas of the home where the dog would have access to.
- Your references (listed on your application) will be contacted
- After successfully completing the above steps, a meet and greet with a dog will be set up. For adult dogs, at least one meet and greet is required, prior to making a final decision.

9. There are often multiple applications for the same dog. Even if your application is successful, there is no guarantee you will automatically adopt the dog you have applied for. We find the best matching home for each dog.

10. If an adopter is not able to keep the dog at any point in the dog’s lifetime, our contract states the dog must be returned to the Ziggy’s Rescue. No adopter is allowed to give away, sell or transfer ownership of the dog.

11. All the above terms are with 1 goal in mind: keeping our rescue dogs safe, happy, healthy and setting them up for success for the rest of their lives. We are all volunteers and rescue work can be extremely emotionally draining. If anyone has any issues with the above terms, it may be best to reach out to a different rescue, rather than arguing with our volunteers.

This is a message to all our loyal followers. It is a very sad time for Ziggy’s Rescue. Ziggy’s Rescue has been forced to close its doors.
I am sure many suspected it was coming. Due to some major personal,health issues, I cannot physically run the rescue any longer. Additionally with adoptions at an all time low and expenses at an unprecedented high, and fundraising completely lacking, it is just not able to support itself. This has been an amazing adventure, and Ziggy’s is proud of the accomplishment of saving over 400 dogs in just 4 years!
We never would have made it happen without the incredible support we have received from volunteers, donors, fosters, adopters, local vet clinics and the local Port Alberni Bosleys.
I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all of our supporters over the years.
I personally will never fully leave behind the rescue world as it is my passion to see dogs lives saved. I will contribute in a different capacity to assist other rescuers with my knowledge and help in whatever capacity I am able as I manage my personal health issues.

100% this is us

Tired is an understatement.
Heart broken is another.

We’ve had to make some incredibly tough calls this week and we are still facing. To say we are lost for words would be an accurate statement.

We are on an intake hold and will not be posting any courtesy posts either at this time as we have SO many incredible dogs in care that aren’t getting a chance to even be looked at.

We will be working at finding all our dogs furever homes and working on the ones we said we’d take.
Our vet bills have sky rocketed again to over $20,000 and we are feeling the fatigue.

While we thought May long was gunna be a good one instead we are racking our brains how to surpass these vet bills and still be on top.

If you leave them on our doorsteps we will have to hand them to another rescue. It’s found you.. now YOU have to step up because our doors are closed until further notice.

To open our doors we need ADOPTIONS.
To open our doors we need FUNDS.

Every time rescue is asked to take an owner surrender- we have to somehow make room on our little raft for that dog. When an owner says stuff like “I don’t have time to give them the best life” or “I have to move” or “they have too much anxiety” it really falls flat because that means if we bring them on the raft, another dog out there in the freezing water gets to die.

Every day in rescue we adjudicate life and death by gate keeping who can get on the boat.

Rescues and shelters are the tiny rescue boats.

The ship is our community at large.

The iceberg is comprised of puppy mills, careless owners, backyard breeders, and a$$hats who won’t spay/neuter.
