Another successful trip to the Pacific Northwest Flower and Garden Show. We were checking out the floor plan the night before the show opened and a kind security guard gave each of us a worker’s pass. It allowed us to wander freely throughout most of the exhibits. Instead of shoulder to shoulder crowds there was almost no one in sight. What an absolute treat!
Spring flowers here I come!

Now is the time to force some flowering branches like Forsythia, fruit trees (especially peach), magnolia, current, etc. In less than a week they'll be blooming and you‘d never know it was -8°C outside.

Heading to Seedy Saturday tomorrow at Echo Centre from 10 AM until 2 PM. There will be small bouquets combined with bunny tail grass and other assorted dried material. Also a small sampling of dahlia tubers but orders are welcome. Hang in there - gardening seaside just around the corner. Oh yeah, I’ll have an assortment of high-quality seed starting trays and humidity domes too.

Taking a break now to visit a few botanical gardens. The Azores, an archipelago about 2000 km southeast of Nova Scotia is my latest adventure. Located on the mid Atlantic Ridge and in the Gulf Stream. The weather is warm and plants grow as if they’re growing in a greenhouse. It’s quite humid here and my hair shows it!! The following photos are from Terre Nostre Botanical Park on Sao Miguel Island. The rest are remnants of volcanic activity on the islands.

All remaining dahlia tubers are now on sale (local pick up/self serve). Shipping not available. There’s still a good selection to choose from. Did you know that dahlias are very deer resistant? Packing up this afternoon to go to the tuber sale in Royston on Saturday. When you think it might be nice to have a roof rack you know you have way too many dahlia tubers, ya think??

The fan is fixed! Bring on the heat! Nights are still cold, but those daytime temperatures are sneaking up. So nice to have a knowledgable handyman close by (a.k.a. #1 son, Cory).

See you on Saturday. I’ll be there with information and a sampling of dahlia tubers. Yes, you can start dahlias early. Just work with Mother Nature and utilize the increasing daylight spring provides. Move tubers into a warm spot now to start the ‘eyeing up’ process, put them in pots in March and then move them to a greenhouse when the first leaves emerge. Then when it warms up enough in May plant them out into the garden. You’ll be rewarded with early blooms.

‘Tis the season to take dahlia cuttings. It’s a bit early but they like being up against the warm chimney, so why not. Pictured is Kelgai Ann (one photo taken in the heat of summer, the other in the waning sunlight of autumn).

Waterlily dahlias are a distinguished group of the dahlia family. They project an aura of elegance and grace.
As the name suggests, it is the shape of a water lily. This means a somewhat flat back and when viewed from the side it tends to have a low gentle arc. Water lily dahlias can have up to 7 rows of petals, however smaller waterlilies tend to have fewer rows than this.

Heading to Naesgaard's Farm & Market this morning with the last of these seasonal beauties. Time to dig up all the dahlia tubers and store for next year.
