Switching to a balanced raw food diet for dogs with raw meaty bones can help promote oral health, or keep your dog’s mouth clean. Raw dog foods contain enzymes which are naturally occurring that can help protect animal’s teeth and gums. These enzymes, combined with a lack of synthetic filler ingredients, sugars, or starches work to help prevent tooth decay or other oral diseases. As well, even pre-ground raw food diets are less likely to stick to teeth than processed kibble and canned food. The food is more likely to slip off the teeth preventing tartar and plaque build up.

Including raw meaty bones in your dog’s food can also help keep your dog’s teeth in top condition. Chewing the raw meaty bones actually provides a better abrasive action then kibble to scrape away build up on dog’s teeth without harming tooth enamel.

A raw diet is biologically appropriate for your dog. It provides your dog with the type of food their body is adapted for. It is free from chemical additives and high amounts of carbohydrates.

Unlike “light” kibble, it is designed to help your dog achieve, and remain at, their ideal healthy weight without cutting vital nutrients from their diet. In fact, dogs on a raw diet receive more proteins, vitamins, and minerals than those eating a processed kibble diet.

Dogs use fat as a source of energy. If they are receiving more fat and and not expending energy, their body will store the fat. Protein gives your dogs metabolism energy, providing the body with the appropriate nutrition while also repairing muscle and resulting in a lean body.

Whereas raw feeding is the best diet dog food option for overweight dogs (and for all other dogs, for that matter), it won’t work miracles. You’ll need to feed your dog the right amount for their size and activity level.

Plus, you’ll need to pick the right raw diet — good-quality raw food contains all the nutrients your dog needs and is low in calories.

Remember to be patient, weight loss can take time to be noticed depending on the size of your dog.
