This dog was abandoned at our front door.

He and so many others have found themselves in our care and our shelters are at capacity.

In light of a recent surge in abandoned and surrendered pets, our shelters have reached a critical capacity, and we are faced with the challenge of finding happy homes for all of them. To address this, we are doing an “Empty the Shelters” campaign where we are waiving the adoption fee to ensure that each and every animal in our care has the chance to find a loving home. We wish circumstances were different but the reality is that more and more animals are coming through our doors each day, and we are running out of space.

Each animal here has its own story, filled with hope and a desire for companionship. By removing the barrier of our adoption fee for a short time, we hope to encourage more families to consider adopting to give these animals the chance they deserve to live happy, fulfilling lives. Trust us, shelter animals have such a special love to give.

We are calling on our supporters, if you can’t adopt an animal yourself, we hope you’ll share our posts with your network to get the word out that we have a ton of amazing animals looking for homes. Until September 1st, the adoption fee is $0 (a license fee will apply - dogs is $25 and $15 for cats). Every adoption is a step toward a brighter future for these pets and helps alleviate the strain on our shelters. Every animal that finds a wonderful home makes space for another one that needs our help.

Visit toronto.ca/adoptapet to see ALL the animals available for this campaign or call Toronto Animal Services at 416-338-PAWS (7297).

** If you are currently struggling with pet care and considering abandoning your animal, please call us so we can discuss alternative options with you. We can help keep families together. **

UPDATE 9/6/2024: ADOPTED! Thank you to all of you who shared Harley’s story after 6 months in a shelter she owes her freedom to all of you for sharing her story.

PROJECT OVERLOOKED – CALEDON ANIMAL SHELTER – HAS NOW SPENT HALF HER LIFE IN A SHELTER: Project Overlooked is a social media initiative where we will showcase homeless dogs sitting in our local shelters that have been overlooked for adoptions for months. More information about our campaign can be found here: https://bit.ly/ProjectOverlooked as a community of animal lovers we need to help decongest our local shelters, and come together and help our local dogs sitting in local shelters in dire need of a family.

We need to be the change that these dogs need to get adopted and into loving homes.
Our ask of you?
Please share each dog in need with your network. The only participation we are asking is that you share each dog we showcase in Project Overlooked so they can get the exposure they need to find their adoptive homes. That share button? Can be the difference in a dog’s life.

Harley is a 1 year old girl Border Collie and Lab mix who has now spent half her life in a shelter.
Harley was dumped and was hiding in a local forested area and during that time, several pictures of her were shared online and resident very concerned for her safety. She was absolutely petrified and was on the run and eluded capture for weeks. Animal Control had a very challenging time securing her as a result of her fear and the fact that she was in survival mode, but finally, they did it! Once she arrived to the shelter she remained very scared and was very apprehensive at first, however, day by day, the shelter staff worked to help her decompress and make her feel safe, and today? She is the sweetest of gals. Harley is an incredibly playful pup after proper introductions to new people. She has an affinity with women and loves the ladies but can be apprehensive of men initially. But rest assured, Harley is easily bribed with treats, and very food motivated!

During her 6 month stay Harley has met some dogs at the shelter and loved them, others seemed to annoy her, but she lets them know. Although Harley has made incredible strides at the shelter, she now after so much time there has found herself really stressed and she needs a new venue before the shelter takes a more severe toll.

Overall, Harley is very affectionate, loves attention and enjoys romping in the shelters backyard while playing with rope toys! She also loves her time in the front office lounging with staff (as per the picture she is happy to greet you).

Harley has met some dogs at the shelter and she may do well in a home with another dog who has the same energy, but she does like to have her toys all to herself. Would be best that if you have a dog that they meet at the shelter to ensure compatibility.

Harley would be best suited in a dog experienced home with children 16+years and with a fully fenced backyard. It is unknown how she does with cats. Harley is no city slicker and would benefit from the suburbs. Harley has waited such a long time and we would really love to see this sweet girl find a family of her own..

So, our mission today? Is to share Harley and find her a family.
Are you up for the challenge?
Let’s be the change that Harley needs to begin their next chapter in her life in an adoptive home.

Harley is at at Caledon Animal Shelter.
Their phone number is 905-584-2272 x4698 and their address is: 12889 Coleraine Drive in Caledon. Their full bio with application can be found here:

WORDS OF WISDOM - THE ANNIVERSARY EDITION: On August 29th 2012, TEAM Dog Rescue was born. And as we approach our 12 year Anniversary we are reflecting on the changing landscape of dog rescues and the desperate need for fosters and adopters. Much has happened in 12 years and you have seen us grow and evolve into a registered charity in 2015, and specifically over the last several years our complete focus to help our local shelters. What we have also seen in the last 12 years has been a change in the rescue landscape.

Our local shelters are busting at the seams with unwanted dogs. Once upon a time we were only contacted when the dog wasn’t doing well in a shelter environment or required emergency veterinary care they couldn’t provide.
In 2024?
We can select any dog from a shelter to welcome into our foster program with ease, and shelters would be grateful for the transfer, why? Because the shelters are full. We mean it. It sounds like an embellishment perhaps, but its not, the shelters? Are. Full. As a result rescues, are also full. Some so full, they have closed intakes, or worse, as of this summer alone, 3 rescues shut their doors, why? Because they no longer feel they are being impactful, not enough donations, not enough fosters, and definitely not enough adopters.

The fight to help local dogs is very difficult.
Repeatedly, week after week, dog are being left tied up to shelter front doors in an act of abandonment and desperation.
Owner surrenders have quadrupled in numbers this year in comparison to the past.
Dogs are being dumped outdoors repeatedly to fend for themselves.
And not a day goes by when a dog is not abandoned in the GTA.
Dogs, are suffering in Ontario
Dogs in our own shelters are overlooked and are being put down for space. Dogs are also put down because they cannot handle the stress of being in a stressful shelter environment and deteriorate over days. Weeks. MONTHS. That takes a huge toll on them psychologically & emotionally. We see this far too often. Not to mention, the dogs that are up in our northern regions and reservations and Manitoba who face life and death. Or the dogs in rural shelters or in other province who face death daily because of overcrowding, and not always by humane methods (gassing, heartsticking, shotgun).
So please, we are begging on behalf of our Canadian dogs, please don't overlook them.
Yes, many are senior and medical.
But not all.
And all are adoptable.

For our 12 year Anniversary we are asking for two things:

1. Adopters need to change their mindset.

We understand passion for breeds but one should equally have passion for all dogs. There are many mixed breed dogs who are perfect and not getting adoption interest because they weren’t born a Golden Retriever or Cockapoo.

We have both in our rescue and can attest to how popular they are come adoption time, but the other dogs who don’t look like them suffer and wait needlessly when they are equally as amazing in temperament.
We need to look at the dog, not just the breed, to determine the appropriate fit.

2. Please foster a dog.

Please, regardless of how inconvenient, regardless of how heartbreaking it would be, the province is in crisis. And as a result of the shortage of foster homes, dogs will die. Please open your homes and give the gift of compassion to a dog in dire need of having nowhere to go and at risk of dying. Show your spouse, your children, the act of kindness that will save a dogs life.

As a rescue and Canadian charity, we act only as a vessel to save the dog, its YOU, the foster, who does the saving by opening your home, because without you?

Dogs die.

Foster a dog today: https://teamdogrescue.ca/you-can-help/adopt/adoption-application/

That’s the best anniversary gift we can ask for, is for your help.

Thank you

About Me and A DOG’s LIFE

Ever since I can remember I wanted to get a dog. Well the closest I got, as kid, was getting a guinea pig. My sisters and I would pretend she was a dog so we designed a leash for her to take her for walks around the neighbourhood. Well that leash would readily slip off and we would spend hours chasing her up and down our street.

Fast forward to adulthood, despite a fantasy of becoming a Vet, I became a psychiatrist, for humans. My fascination with dogs, especially the relationship dynamics in packs, but also how they learn to trust and their attachment to humans, continued to grow.

And, finally I got my first dog, and second and third..... I’m sure you can imagine how that story unfolded. WOW, what a wonderful part of my life.

Now I have 3 rescues; a street dog from Thailand, who I named Lotus; Shanti, a beauty from Ontario, who arrived at the Northumberland Humane Society with her 1 week old puppies when I was onsite, volunteering one day. It was love at first site, again😍.
