Deep in the Gazette photo archive is a battered old Kodak film box. It contains several rare —and extremely fragile—glass negatives taken by Rudolph Tauskey. They date to the early 1920s.

Using a sophisticated scanner, our creative production team has struck crisp digital images from the delicate glass plates. This ensures that these Tauskey treasures, most of which haven't been seen by Gazette readers for 80 or 90 years, will be part of our sport's historical record far into the future.

The image we share here is from a glass negative Tauskey made of Collie Int. Ch. Bellhaven Laund Logic, out of Florence B. Ilch's famous Bellhaven kennel at Red Bank, New Jersey. We date it circa 1922, the year Mrs. Ilch imported Laund Logic from England, where he was whelped in 1917. He would become an influential sire in the breed.

Our thoughts are with the Toronto Police Service and their K9 Unit during this difficult time. Rest peacefully Bingo and thank you for your service 🕊️

Dozens of officers gathered downtown on Thursday morning for a procession to honour a Toronto police dog who was shot and killed in the line of duty earlier this week.

Way to go Reign and The Collies of Heather Circle!

We love seeing more Collies do such noble work that they are indeed qualified for. Temperament and intuition are important pillars in our breeding program so that we can provide service programs with suitable individuals.

Congratulations to Reigns breeders and family on a job well done!

COURTHOUSE COLLIE
It was a long day for Reign at the US Courthouse in Los Angeles where he assisted the Assistant US Attorney by providing comfort and support to two young girls who were required to testify. The case isn't over yet so Reign will be back early tomorrow morning to do more of what he does best.

👃 the nose knows!

Ever noticed those slits at the sides of a dog's nose? Why do dogs have them?

Once again, nature proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale, if we exhale out our mouths.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dog's nostrils doesn't get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but let's use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: If our eyes were our nose, what we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.

Just wow.

Congratulations Libby! CH Ennismoor’s Liberty Belle took Select Bitch, Best of Breed (3pt Major) and a Group 2 handled by under judges Thomas Alexander and Judi Shurb at the Barrie Kennel & Obedience club July 31st! 🏆

Thrilled to announce it is now Ennismoor Rum Runner at Glasshouse NS! 🏆 in 4 out of 6 runs over the last two events, Rooney completed his 150pt CKC Novice Sprinter title and left with an additional 84pts towards his 500pt Sprinter title 🤩

Very proud to have such versatility in my program. It’s important to me that a herding breed keep its functional working movement instead of breeding for the front end “flash” that is becoming too common. Our dogs will now take a well deserved break for a few weekends until their Herding Instinct testing in August!

Thank you to Amanda, Sarah and Darlene Allison for your help and good company today! Big thank you to the volunteers at and Simcoe Performance Dogs for another great event 🥰

All that glitters is sometimes gold! 🏅 Ennismoor Rum Runner at Glasshouse “Rooney” entered his first CKC Sprinter Run hosted by Red Barn Event Centre taking home 3 qualifying scores and 119 points towards his 150pt Novice Sprinter title. One more run should finish this boy 🤩

When the coat blows you can catch him in the fast lane 😎 💨 🏁

What a fantastic past weekend for our dogs at the Kingston & District Kennel Club in Odessa! 🏆 💫

‘Libby’ CH Ennismoor’s Liberty Belle took BOB on Friday under judge Barbara Heal and Select Bitch today under judge Doug Gaudin for a total of 2 pts this weekend towards her GCH.

‘Rooney’ Ennismoor Rum Runner at Glasshouse took a first in the 12-18m dog (only us), Winners Dog and BOS for his 1st point towards his CH under Doug Gaudin today. I’m particularly proud of this one as Rooney was so patient in his stack and moved out beautifully - he’s getting it now! No pictures of him today as we opted for a professional shot with the judge to celebrate!

Rooney (by Am GCH Can CH Braeton Ennismoor Soul of a Sailor HIC) and Libby (by CH Omega Split Decision) are both bred by Darlene Allison and out of one of her top producing dams Ennismoor’s Rich Enchantment (who is getting close to her ROM).

Down in the states, my homebred boy ‘Swain’ Glasshouse Admiral of the Fleet (newly minted UKC CH) took a first in the champion class and BOB over an experienced GCH and a Group 3rd with his new mom Jenni Lough Watson of Greatdogs Know (thank you to judge Antonio Raposo). Swain is pictured here with his young friend Matthew, and Jenni. Swain is only 7 months old!

One more show to go and I think the coats will be blown for the season - and onto some performance work! Now to finish loading that hay…the work is never done!

A little late but special none the less! 🌟

Earlier this month CH Ennismoor’s Liberty Belle took to the ring again to start working on her Grand Champion. Under judge Sylvia Barkey “Libby” was Select Bitch for 2 pts towards her GCH. Of course as soon as she was entered in the show, she started blowing coat! But she’s always beautiful in our eyes 🤍💙

Libby will be six this year and was bred by Darlene Allison of Ennismoor Collies & Shelties.
