The first tick of the year! We have had a very mild winter, which means ectoparasites that normally go dormant in cold weather are up and about (and they’re hungry!)
This big gal was found inside the ear of one of our patients while she was in clinic for other concerns. Ticks can be very sneaky and difficult to find (especially on our fluffy fur babies!) and love to spend time around the head and neck. The best way to stop these nasty guys from harming our pets is by having them on a tick preventative- this will get the medicine into the tick and kill it before it can potentially release the lyme disease spirochete into your pet!
Fun fact: ticks are an arachnid, which means theyre related to spiders and scorpions! (Gross!)

It's cold out there! Here are some recommendations on how best to keep your fur baby safe and warm during these chilly days! 🐾
-Small dogs lose more body heat more quickly than big dogs, so they need to be outside for no more than 5 minutes at a time, and they should be monitored. If they are holding their paws up in the air, they are too cold and need to brought inside. If they did not get a chance to urinate or defecate, let them warm up and take them out again with more encouragement to “do their business”.
- Dog booties are helpful in cold weather, but some dogs will not tolerate them.
- Large dogs may have trouble with cold weather too, so if you are going on a longer walk, it should be no more than 15 minutes if the temperature is minus 10 degrees or below.
- Dog coats help to a degree, but they do not keep them as warm as a person is with a full ski jacket on.
- Beware of salt on sidewalks used to melt ice—this can be very irritating for a dog—if you notice the dog holding a paw up it may be due to the salt.

- Try and keep cats indoors in the really cold weather (-10 degrees or below).
- Outdoor cats will often seek heat when they are outside—many cats will climb into to car and onto the block heater to get some warmth—if your car is going to be started in the cold weather, always bang on the front of the car to startle any cats warming up on the block heat. By making them aware they will typically jump down and out of the car.
