It’s nice and warm outside! Unfortunately this means that ticks are active again. This map shows the areas that are higher risk for encountering ticks that can transmit Lyme disease to pets and people. If your pet isn’t already on a tick prevention medication, you may want to contact your veterinarian to discuss the best option for them.

September 28, 2023 is the 17th World Rabies Day

- The World Health Organization has set a goal of zero human dog-mediated rabies deaths by 2030
- Rabies is a viral disease which occurs in more than 150 countries and territories
- Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost 100% fatal
- Rabies causes tens of thousands of deaths every year, 40% of whom are children
- Domestic dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans
- Wild animals that commonly carry rabies include bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes
- Rabies can be prevented through vaccination of dogs and cats, and prevention of dog and cat bites
- In Ontario, dogs and cats over 3 months of age must be vaccinated for rabies and kept up-to-date for their entire life
- After potential exposure to a rabid animal, people can seek post-exposure prophylaxis, which consists of immediate, thorough wound washing with soap and water for 15 minutes, a series of rabies vaccinations and, if indicated, administration of rabies immunoglobulin or monoclonal antibodies, which can be life-saving
