Building confidence in a nervous dog
Do you have a dog that’s reactive on walks? Here are some tips and things to think about…
Dog Trainer Tales - Funny Stories
I’ve been a dog trainer a long time now and I’ve got plenty of funny stories to share….
Teaching a dog how to walk politely on leash is only more pleasant for everyone, but is also safer for you, your dog, and anyone else you encounter.
Our girls like to have fun! Please note before you read further - This is a post about dogs from the same household, if dogs that know and like each other. This is NOT about going to a dog park! Play is great for dogs to engage in, but it should be reciprocal play, meaning that one dog isn’t always on the offensive. It’s also the human who’s in charge to end the play session if it’s becoming too rambunctious or you suspect that it escalate into something unpleasant.
Be proactive when training your dog!
Threshold training is very important when it comes to impulse control and it’s nice to have a dog with good manners 😊
Venus is getting lots of guided exposure to increase her confidence around different distractions. We are at Ballistic K9 doing group training. Our own group training will be starting later this month.
Venus and I have been going for some group training classes at Ballistic K9 to provide more socialization for her. Venus has been an extremely nervous dog, especially around people, and I have been providing guided exposure to help her with this. I really appreciate Vedran of Ballistic K9 being supportive to another dog trainer so that Venus can experience a variety of distractions including more appropriate exposure to people different environments.

Puppies grow up quickly! Look at how different these young pups are compared to a GSD that is 7 weeks older. It’s so important to set your young pups up for success through training, establishing healthy routines, and proper guided socialization when they are especially impressionable. It doesn’t mean you can’t do it later, it’s just a lot easier when you give them a good start. That’s why we call our program for young puppies, The Puppy Good Start Program 😊
We get a real cross section when it comes to the dogs we train! Here are just a few faces of our recent and current clients!

Teach your dog to switch sides on command
Our little Venus is 1 year old today!
A short video from last night’s summer group training class. This is ‘random heeling’ - everyone walks randomly around each other, so it’s much less structured, with the exception that the dogs must continue to heel beside their owners. You will notice some doing the ‘switch command’ - passing the dog behind them to the other side. We teach this so that you can create distract between dogs, people, and anything else you don’t want your dog to be close to.
Practicing down stays - even going out of sight!
Who has a shy dog? I do, and she’s a lot better, but random people rushing her to say HI and pet her, DOES NOT help. You should never approach or touch a dog that doesn’t belong to you without getting PERMISSION FIRST!
