A little about Bernie the BUG (a Boston Terrier X Pug) 🩵
In just four sessions his owner can already see improvement, and is hopeful for more enjoyable walks around the community 👌🏼
In the beginning, Bernie barked at so many different stimuli. He even barked to get his owner to react. Enter, Paw in Hand. Together we helped bring some reliable, predictable routines to his life so that he could be less reactive. I am hopeful for continued improvement over the upcoming months, so he can join our Wednesday night group dog field trips, too!
Our Custom Dog Training sessions start at $330 and may include one or a combination of the following:
▫️ Coaching sessions where we coach you to train your dog.
▫️ Training sessions where we work with your dog to a level where you can be coached to take over.
▫️ Private training walks to help solidify new good behaviour
▫️ Ongoing support by phone, text, video or email.

Here are just some highlights of dogs.
Chilling out on a walk while out and about around other dogs and people.
Sometimes it can be hard when you have to negotiate outings on your own when you have a dog that can be reactive. Having the support of other people, and a trainer on hand to keep an eye on the environment while giving you tips, can make you feel less alone 💚

🚨 WILDLIFE ALERT 🚨
With bear season here, and squirrels around yearly, I wanted to let you know that it is possible for you to help your dog react better around wildlife!
Sure, you can teach your dog to respond to commands such as ‘come’ or ‘look at you’. But if you can catch them IN the act (the second they see their prey of choice), and provide them with some alternative stimulating, high value game or reward, then with many repetitions, they will learn to look at you in response to seeing the prey. It takes a lot of work, but it is possible!
Ivy can look at the squirrel, and admire it from a safe and controlled distance, but then we chased rolling cheeseballs 🧀👏🏻
It’s a habit that has taken many repetitions, but instead of correcting your dogs behaviour, provide an alternative! 🐶
Picking up your dog and WHY you should train for this in advance 👇️
🐶If your dog is already nervous or stressed, and you need to pick them up, they might not be trusting. This can add to their stress and it may make hard to convince them again in the future.
🌲Take the time to train in advance whether for emergency situations, or part of your life, such as getting in and out of boats, airplanes, or small dogs that need the safety of your arms but resist being “scooped up” against their will.
🩺 Then there are the stories of injured dogs that need to be carried, possibly even with a sling or stretcher. We hope this never happens to you, but when you plan ahead and practice the basics, the added stress of needing to be carried out will not be present.

Congratulations, Luna 💕
Luna’s people decided on one-on-one lessons because they knew they had a super smart, sensitive puppy on their hands! Raising a puppy takes a lot of forethought, especially when it comes planning ➡️ planning on how you prevent your puppy from being inadvertently reinforced for doing undesirable behaviors! 🦴 and that’s not even including the time it takes to train skills when they’re young. There is so much good going for this stunning girl. A great start by all 👏🏻

What a cute little fungi… fun girl, actually. Her owners are tag teaming her training to meet her needs in these important early weeks!
Keep up the great work
👉🏻Just a reminder that our Group Puppy Training Classes will be taking a pause through the summer months (June, July and August). We will still be offering Private Puppy training, which allows you book your training sessions to fit in with your busy summer schedule!
Last week we said goodbye to Trixie as she crossed over rainbow bridge, slurping ice cream under the shade of a dogwood tree 💔
When I think back, 17.5 years ago when we drove down to meet her, the first thing that struck me was that she was not 12 inches tall as described. Not even at to the tips of her ears! I never thought I’d own a dog that small, but I learned so much from her. Most importantly that size doesn’t matter. Trixie was a big dog in terrier spirit. Even when she lost her sight a few years ago, she didn’t stop wagging! 😊
There is a big empty spot in our lives now - see you again little rat!
RIP Trixie - say hi to Opal for us!
Arrrrooooooo! ❤️

I am sure a few of you can relate to this one... 😂

This may look like we're relaxing in the backyard, soaking in the sunshine ☀️
But Maisie is actually learning two very important puppy lessons
1️⃣ Wait
2️⃣ Leave it
These are great impulse control skills. But let’s face it, Maisie is also a fairly calm puppy so it wasn’t too hard for her to learn, or me to teach 🐶

This is your reminder that if you have a dog that LOVES to dig… it’s OKAY to let them 💕
Ivy loves to dig so I take her to places occasionally where she can fulfil her heart desire. Just look at how happy she is ☺️☺️
Let's Chat about Puppy Socialization 🐶
My quick trainer notes would be...
1️⃣ Be careful not to let your puppy have a bad experience when they are young. Only let them play with well matched puppies OR appropriate calm adult dogs.
2️⃣ Adolescent dogs are typically not good role models for puppies.
3️⃣ Just because your puppy is already social, doesn't mean they should meet every dog they see. This can easily turn to frustration in the future.
This advice also applies to dog trainers as well.
YES, I would LOVE to take photos of ALL my puppies (both in Group Classes or Private Lessons), but in group training sessions, I also need to ensure 100% of my attention is on making sure each individual puppy has a good experience! 💚

Maisie is a big just THE cutest 💕
She was adopted from in Whistler, and now lives in Powell River. Her family signed her up for Private Puppy lessons so they could maintain her manners in a variety of environments! With the help of her family, and extended family to care for her, she is making very positive strides 👏🏻👏🏻 Teamwork makes the dream work! 💚
Trainer Insight 👇🏻
I often get owners asking me to help them teach their puppy how to go downstairs. One session (after a couple of minutes) and she had it ALL figured out. Good thing, too. She was getting heavy to carry! 🤣

What's better than a double puppy graduation?
A double puppy SIBLING graduation! 💕🎓️
Lily and Dolly are from the same litter and have been adopted into related families. However, that’s where their similarities ends! They look quite different and have very different levels of energy, too! Luckily, both of them are making great progress in puppy foundations, manners, and skills. And yes, they are as sweet as they look.

New to You Rescue Profile 🐶🐶
Zeus and Haney are eight and nine years old and are a bonded pair rescued from the 💕
Adopting mature dogs with a limited known history takes understanding and patient owners. Taking the time to train the dogs individually, as well as together takes a lot of dedication and willingness to take things slowly at the dogs’ level. The next step for all parties, is to get the dogs out around more situations and a predictable environment. Including ones with no off leash dogs so that we can continue to make progress of being calm, thoughtful and responsive around other dogs.
We are so excited to see their progress already

This is one lucky pup 🐶
Dakota’s family has been spending a lot of time working with him, and it shows. They’ve been socializing, teaching manners, training, providing mental AND physical stimulation, and teaching him that he can get what he wants, if he CAN calm down. This is not easy for a dog that’s bred to work – as off switches can be sticky!
A combination of private lessons and puppy class have helped round out the education for this smart and handsome guy! Way to go (humans!) and Dakota.
Puppy Classes are a great place to start 💚

PSA: Always check your dogs surroundings if your dog is going to be off leash… this is the perfect example of WHY 🎣 I can’t stress the importance of teaching your dog an emergency STOP 🛑 command or cue. Let’s talk about frustration in dog training 💬 We all experience it, and it’s important to note that a little bit can be a good thing if you have a plan to increase skills at your dog’s level. If it’s too frustrating, things can backfire. Insert, Dixie. Dixie is super social with other dogs but does not have the skills and impulse control for polite greetings so holding her back on the leash, makes her look like a curly tornado. On the flipside, holding a dog back from something she wants can be a motivator to take learning to the next level. Dixie is over two years old and can’t jump into the back seat of her owner’s vehicle. Frustration worked in our favour and we got her to do it a few times in a row! A few more practice sessions of this, and fingers crossed, her owner won’t have to lift her in anymore. Frustrations in dog training can happen... let’s come up with a solution to turn them into new skills 💚🐾 www.pawinhand.com #happydogs #dogtrainingtips #doganxiety #fearfreepets #positivereinforcement

Excitable! Happy! Impulsive! Social! Many traits can be seen as desirable or undesirable depending on the situation… look at the smiles on the faces of Brigitta (Brigitta von Trapp) and her owner! We are working on ways of engaging her enthusiasm through training games 🎾🦴😃#mixedbreed #positivereinforcement
When a small dog is worried or stressed, people often don’t “listen” to their body language to help them feel safe. After a while, such dogs learn to fend for themselves and act out using the theory, “the best defence is a good offence” manner. How can you help your small dog when they are stressed? 😣 ▪️Create distance ▪️Remove them from the situation ▪️Pick them up before they escalate into aggressive body language. However, sometimes small dogs also don’t like to be picked up against their will — teaching them to jump willingly into your arms or lap can be helpful as well. Remember, what to do in which situation all depends… there is no “one sized fits all”approach! 💚 #dogtrainer #dogtraining #smalldog #dogbehaviortraining #dogsofinstagram #fearfreepets
Dog Training Profile 🐕 Millie is a wheaten terrier/poodle cross or “Whoodle”. I showed her owner how to do hand target behaviour, and he went into a sequence of things they were working on. I love it when owners take initiative and find their own way of doing things. Have fun and remember, done is better than perfect! Having challenges getting your dog to come when they’re called? 🐕 Calo is a mix breed with your typical independent husky, part ‘quick-to-act’ collie, some sweet retriever and possibly a teeny bit of wolf – all of which contribute to his wild sense of adventure! Coming when called was a challenge for Calo, and staying close in the first place was part of the new plan. What’s next for these two? POV: You're training for the Sunshine Coast Marathon Shuffle on April 30th, and you experience hail, thunderstorms, lightning, and extreme wind - even Ivy thinks we should turn back! 😳 What is the Sunshine Coast Marathon Shuffle, you ask? For those who are unfamiliar with this event, it means I will need to run, hike, or ’shuffle’ myself a total of 29 KM along one of the most beautiful sections of this 180 KM trail, in a quick 8-hour time frame. Wish me luck! #dogtrainer #powellriver #sunshinecoasttrail
Dog Training Profile 🐾 Odin the Great Dane is a one year old playful “house horse” as his owner refers to him 😂Giant breeds mature at a much slower rate than small dogs so this guy is just starting to trickle into the teenage phase. A good time to be sure you have a plan for boundary-setting, continued impulse control, and progression of training skills using positive reinforcement, all types… Don’t limited it to just food rewards! 🥓 Play praise and access to life rewards are all apart of the sweet deal in this dogs life! 🎾 Follow us for more dog training tips 👇🏼 https://instagram.com/pawinhanddogtraining?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= #greatdane #doglife #happydog #adventuredog #dogtraining #puppytraining #positivereinforcement
Active, curious, and smart - puppies are constantly trying to figure out what works in the world. Benjamin had discovered that threads from furniture and carpets could be OH so fun! But if there's an option of a cardboard box to shred (with bonus treats inside!) a puppy would likely choose that instead. The best strategy for teaching - make it easy to do the right thing! 🐶 #puppytraining #dogtrainingtip #australianshepherd
Lewis is an energetic Australian Shepherd. His energy on leash gets transferred into leaping and lunging and barking… Both of his owners have put in a lot of work, and are learning to channel his energy so that Lewis can be more polite on leash. Today his lessons were successful and ended in a fun play session with Ivy! 🐾💚🐾 There is nothing more wonderful than to watch, two well matched dogs play together! Words or verbal cues need to be salient in the environment and have relevance to your dog for them to respond. Talking to people on the trail and making noise to let bears know of your presence are irrelevant. A loud “COME” cue is immediately responded to because it has been conditioned to always mean something positive. Something worth repeating every time and not missing out on! High value rewards every time gets a recall every time! 🧀🥓🌭🍗🍔🥩

Hi! I’m Maren, owner and head trainer at Paw in Hand.
I often hear murmurs of people referring to me as a dog whisperer, but I prefer the term dog listener!
Ever since I was a child I was always surrounded by dogs and could be found training our family boxer and the neighbours’ dogs too!
For more than two decades I have been committed to using force free, science-based training methods to reinforce manners, life skills and desirable behaviour in dogs. I help the human end of the leash learn how to be a better partner too.
Qualifications, Experience, Education, Ethics and Certification matter. Find the details here.
My toolbox of training techniques and understanding of canine behaviour is extensive. Each situation with each dog and client is different and requires an individual approach for best results. I apply the most effective training techniques to your specific situation.
Our promise to you and your dog is to always use humane, ethical training methods and never use shock, pain, fear, physical force, or compulsion based methods and to begin behavior change programs with the least invasive and least aversive training protocols. We have travelled far on our journey … and can help you and your dog on a successful journey together!
