🎄🐾 Elfelfa’s Microchip Mission! 🐾🎄

Today, Elfelfa is shining a spotlight on the importance of microchipping your pets! 🐾✨ Microchips are tiny, but they can make a huge difference when it comes to keeping your furry friends safe.

A microchip is a small device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted under your pet's skin. It carries a unique ID number that links to your contact information in a pet recovery database. If your pet ever gets lost, a quick scan at a shelter or vet clinic can help reunite you with them faster. ❤️

Dewie is proudly showing off that she’s microchipped—she’s always ready to set a great example! Elfelfa, on the other hand, is busy pretending to scan every pet in sight (he’s a little too enthusiastic!).

📅 Microchip and nail trim Clinic 📅
We’re hosting a microchip and nail trim clinic this weekend!
🗓️ December 14th & 15th
⏰ 10 AM to 4 PM
📞 Call the shelter to make an appointment for your pets and give them the gift of extra security this holiday season!

Microchipping is a quick, affordable, and safe way to protect your pets. Make it part of your pet’s care plan to give you peace of mind and keep them safe!

Reminder: Dewie is our beloved shelter mascot and is not available for adoption. She’s here to stay, spreading joy and setting a paw-sitive example for pet care!

With Christmas fast approaching we thought it would be a good idea to make a post on how to pick the perfect chew toys for your dog! 🎁🎄

The main thing to be aware of is the material the toy is made from. Toys made from vinyl or rubber plastics can easily tear apart, making them a risk for choking or gastrointestinal obstruction. Hard plastic toys are also a no-no as this material can easily risk cracking or shattering your dog's teeth. A good way to tell if the toy is too hard for your pet's teeth is to press your fingernail down onto the toy. If your nail doesn't leave an indentation, then it's likely too hard.

Unfortunately, there is no type of safe bone for your dogs. Nylon bones and animal bones both can cause choking, intestinal obstruction, broken teeth or other gastrointestinal injuries.

Easily digestible rawhides, hooves, pig ears, and antlers are still risky for the above-mentioned complications.

So, what is a safe chew toy⁉️

Soft, natural rubber toys are an excellent option both for puppies and hard chewers. All toys should be given under supervision, and they should always be replaced if you see the toy is ripped, has pieces missing or has holes in them.

Don't forget that toys should be cleaned regularly to prevent bacteria build-up. Handwashing using a pet-friendly laundry or dish detergent or a solution made of one-part water and one-part white vinegar work perfectly. Don't forget to rinse them well after washing!

Our staff pick for tough rubber chews is the Zogoflex brand. These chews come in various shapes and sizes and hold up well for those heavy-duty chewers! These chews can be found on our online store. Go to the link below to register for free or sign in if your already registered. Simply search "Zogo" to see all the available options! 🐾

If you’ve been to the clinic over the past couple of months you likely had the pleasure of meeting the newest addition to our team, Monica.

We are so proud to work with such a selfless and kindhearted individual, who’s love for animals is obvious! Monica responded to the PrinceAlbert Spca desperate need for cat and dog food. She put together a fundraiser in just one day (in 9 hours to be exact) and raised $790 to buy this van load of food 🤯. Our clinic has no claim in any of this amazing act of generosity…it was all Monica! 🫶😻

Please consider donating to the PA SPCA if at all possible. Every little bit helps them to help all those animals in need!

❄️Looks like winter is here to stay. Here are a few tips to ensure your canine companion stays happy and healthy during the cold winter months:

1) 🐾Protect their paws from cold, frostbite, and from salt and other chemicals used to melt ice and snow. Booties are great, if your dog will keep them on long enough! If not, ensure to limit their time outside on the cold days. Using pet friendly ice melts are a must if you use these products around your home. If your dog does come in contact with ice melt that you don’t know is pet friendly or not, wipe their paws off right away with a damp towel to prevent chemical burns or ingestion from licking their paws.

2) 🏠Outdoor dogs must have proper protection from the elements. Windchill with wet and heavy snow is dangerous for all dogs - no matter the breed, haircoat, or age. An insulated doghouse which is elevated from the ground will provide protection from the wind and prevent moisture build-up inside of the doghouse. Bedding that can be changed every couple of weeks will provide extra warmth while laying down. Using burlap or canvas as a door over the opening of the doghouse will protect your dog from the wind and keep the house warmer.

3) 🍽Calorie changes. Outdoor dogs need more calories during the winter months to help them keep warm. Indoor dogs typically need the opposite. If your indoor dog is generally less active in the winter then reducing their calories will help prevent any unwanted weight gain. Preventing weight gain during the winter is a healthier option for your dog rather than relying on them to loose that weight in the summer months.

4) 🫗All outdoor pets must always have access to fresh water. If using heated water bowls, ensure to check daily that they are working properly.

Our furry friends here at the SPCA are in need of your help! We are currently low on dry cat and kitten food and are asking for donations to ensure every hungry belly gets a meal. 🐱❤️

If you can contribute, please consider donating:
✔️ Dry cat food
✔️ Dry kitten food
✔️ Monetary donations through paypal on our website or e-transfers to [email protected]

Every little bit helps us care for these lovable cats and kittens while they wait for their forever homes. 🏠

Note: We try to stay away from Special kitty dry food as it tends to upset the stomachs of our kitties.

These kitties are not available for adoption at this time though we have 31 available kitties up on our website!

November is Pet Diabetes Month, so let’s talk about it!

Diabetes mellitus is a disease of the pancreas, resulting in a failure to regulate blood sugar. Type I diabetes mellitus, also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, is the most common type of diabetes in dogs. Whereas Type II diabetes mellitus is the most common type of diabetes in cats. Obesity is a predisposing factor in type II diabetes. A cat only three pounds over its ideal weight is at high risk of developing type II diabetes mellitus!

The most common signs of diabetes include increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, and increased appetite.

Diabetes mellitus is diagnosed by a combination of the history of symptoms as mentioned above, a high level of glucose in the blood, and the presence of glucose in the urine.

Treatment of Diabetes mellitus in dogs consists of daily insulin injections. In cats’ treatment typically is by daily insulin injections although there are now oral treatments available for cats, but this is not a suitable treatment option for all diabetic cats. Well-balanced nutrition in both dogs and cats is also important to properly manage the disease.

When diabetes mellitus is properly regulated, and if treatment and monitoring are consistent, most pets will have a good quality of life with few symptoms.
