The Cowtown Litter is three weeks old today!
They are growing and changing so quickly! They have now started to toddle around, are starting to play wrestle with each other and are showing more interest in their surroundings every day. We are doing their Puppy Culture exercises daily! They will be introduced to solid foods this week and will also be introduced to the litter box as we attempt to litter train them!

It do be like that though!
When breeding dogs conscientiously and responsibly, you spend hours and hours planning, looking after puppies, training dogs, training in dog sports, traveling to health testing, paying for health testing and going back and forth to the vet. Not to mention the hours you spend helping people who maybe haven't had a puppy for a long time or this might be their first puppy! It's a labor of love done for the love of these incredible animals we are lucky enough to call family.

We did the puppies ENS (early neurological stimulation) outside today because it is a beauty of a day outside today! Longhorn decided to take a little nap on the damp towel after his ENS session.
What is ENS?
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) exercises, which are conducted once daily from the third to the 16th days, a period believed to be a time of rapid neurological growth and development. Even though puppies are very immature during this time frame, they are sensitive and respond to ENS.

The US Military developed this method designed to improve the performance of future military working dogs, according to the Breeding Better Dogs program developed by Dr. Carmen Battaglia, esteemed breeder, judge, seminar presenter, and AKC board member.

ENS requires handling the puppies one at a time while performing a series of five exercises. Listed in order of preference, the handler starts with one pup and stimulates it using each of the five exercises. The handler completes the series from beginning to end before starting with the next pup. These exercises are done with each puppy once per day.
When performed correctly, ENS is believed to impact the neurological system by kicking it into action earlier than would be normally expected, the result being an increased capacity that later will help to make the difference in its performance, according to Breeding Better Dogs. ENS is time sensitive and must be performed from the third to the 16th days of a puppy’s life.

The exercises are not a substitution for daily handling and stroking of young puppies.

Five benefits have been observed in canines that were exposed to ENS, including improved cardio vascular performance (heart rate); stronger heart beats; stronger adrenal glands; more tolerance to stress; and greater resistance to disease.

In tests of learning, ENS stimulated pups were more active and exploratory than their non- stimulated littermates, according to Breeding Better Dogs.

Here is Gretchens ultrasound from yesterday! It’s super interesting to see the puppies on the ultrasound. We were able to see heartbeats and their legs moving and spines. So cool!
We counted approximately six puppies, but this is just a rough estimate as counting puppies on ultrasounds isn’t always accurate.
We are still accepting families for the waitlist. Check out www.continentalmeadows.com for details!

Time to reveal our coat color genetic results!
Beckett is a blue phantom and Gretchen is a blue parti. The phantom gene and the parti gene are recessive, which means a puppy has to inherit two copies of the gene to express phantom or parti coloring.
In our genetics results we can see that Beckett carries one copy for parti and that Gretchen carries one copy for phantom. So based on this we know it is possible for Beckett and Gretchen to produce both parti and phantom color patterns!
So for this litter we will be expecting to see puppies of black, blue, silver in solid, abstract, parti and phantom. It's not a guarantee that all color possibilities will be represented in this litter but this gives us an idea of what we might see when the time comes!

Great news!
Beckett and Gretchen's Embark DNA tests came back! We were expecting clear results on genetic disease as their parents are all clear, and no surprise Beckett and Gretchen were also both clear of genetic disease.
This means that for the particular sets of genetic diseases we are able to test for, they are clear which means none of their offspring will be affected by those diseases.
Unfortunately there are no genetic screening available for everything as there is still so much not known about what causes certain diseases and conditions and the genetics surrounding certain diseases and conditions can be very complicated. We believe strongly in testing for everything currently available to us so we can make better breeding decisions.
In addition to the screening for genetic disease we also color tested them both. We have been much awaiting our color testing results! We will share with you the exciting results of our color testing tomorrow!

I feel like this is a very important post to share and I encourage you to read it, I have re-posted it from Crystal Creek Standard Poodles. I always do my best to be transparent with our breeding program and this doesn't come without risk. It's not only other breeder's being cruel to other breeders for being honest and transparent, it's also pet owners and dog enthusiasts in general that do this. There is no perfect dog, things don't always work out the way you planned them and there are so many things that can't be predicted. As a breeder I talk a lot about potential problems buyers may face with their dogs. I talk about problems I have encountered or faced with my own dogs. I always want to be available for questions about our dogs, even the difficult ones and answer them to the best of my ability. Don't punish breeder's for being honest about their dogs by shaming them publicly or spreading rumors. All it does is fuel that breeder's perceived need to be secretive about their breeding program which doesn't help the breeder, it doesn't help the owner and it doesn't help dogs.
www.continentalmeadows.com

I have taken a lot of pride in being honest with the public when health issues crop up in breedings.

Puppies are not made on an assembly line, they don’t always come out perfect. Temperaments aren’t always perfect, health is not always perfect.

But when breeders are transparent about issues they have produced & that knowledge is used as a weapon against us, it makes it hard to want to stay transparent.

Regardless if you are another breeder, dog fancier, or a simple pet owner- make sure you are not shaming a breeder for being honest about our program’s downfalls.

“When you punish a breeder for transparency you fuel the monster of secrecy”

Quote Authored by myself, as seen shared by American Dog Fancier.

Beckett got to do another training seminar with his friend Steve from K9 Intel. Beckett and I have been working with Steve for two years! Steve is a IGP trainer from Edmonton Alberta. IGP is a sport originally created for the German Shepherd Dog to show off the skills of the German Shepherd in tracking, obedience and protection work. IGP is actually open to any breed of dog to compete but German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois have been bred for generations specifically to enhance the traits that make them excel at the sport.
Beckett and I do this for fun. Beckett isn't well suited to protection work, to Beckett he is playing a really fun game with his friend Steve. But because Beckett enjoys it, we keep going back and training if nothing else, so Beckett and Steve can visit. What Beckett is doing here is barking at Steve to demand his toy back. This is the beginnings of how to train what they call in the sport a "bark and hold" where the dog barks at the "bad guy" (the helper), to hold them in place until the handler arrives. This is NOT aggression on Beckett's part at all, Beckett is simply saying to Steve "Hey! Give me my toy so we can play!"
More pictures of the fun we had at this training seminar coming soon!
