Prince George Veterinary Hospital We are an AAHA Accredited companion animal hospital. We stress the importance of an annual physical examination because of the shorter lifespan of our pets.

Age is not a disease!

While there are conditions that correlate with age, it does not mean these older animals are automatically unhealthy or unfit for anesthesia. We do everything we can to ensure safe procedures are performed. This can include: pre-anesthetic bloodwork, radiographs, cardiac workup, abdominal ultrasounds, send out testing, etc.

If you are concerned about the risk of anesthesia, please talk to your Veterinarian.

A non-anesthetic dental cleaning is exactly what it sounds like.

The pet is restrained and using different tools a non-veterinary professional removes the visible tartar on the pet’s teeth. If an ultrasonic scaler is used without water (to avoid the pet breathing in the water) there is a significant chance of damaging the nerves and health of the tooth due to the heat buildup.

Why does my veterinarian recommend against using these services? Aren’t clean teeth good?

Unfortunately, our pets are not as compliant as their people counterparts. A dog (and definitely not a cat!) will not willingly open their mouth, hold still and spit out any tartar or cleaners used. The pet is likely to experience pain and stress associated with the procedure. The risk of damage and pain are not worth the “look” of clean teeth. As they are unable to fully clean tartar from below the gumline (where significant disease can hide) the pet is likely to experience continued progression of hidden tooth decay and bad breath.

With Dental Health Month coming up we're going to start talking about oral health in your pet and how you can help them.

If you look at your pet's teeth can you see a build up of tartar? The typically brown to yellow layer of hardened plaque that builds up over time. Can you see gingivitis? Red and inflamed gums.

Senior Pet Health Month

Swimming! This low impact exercise can be great for older dogs (and cats but most won't enjoy it!). Unless you have an indoor pool, you will have to wait for springtime before taking your pup out for a swim.

Senior Pet Health Month
How do I get pills into my pet? If your pet is food motivated you can hide the pill in wet food or a pill pocket (special treat designed to hide pills). Some pets can easily find the medication hidden in food. In those cases you can pill them directly by opening their mouth and putting the pill far back, then closing their mouth and encouraging them to swallow. Treats offered directly after the pill can encourage them to swallow quickly to eat the treat. In some cases long term medication can be compounded into easy to administer formulations (liquids, chews, etc.).
