Did you know that some cats with diabetes mellitus can go into remission and no longer require insulin? They can sometimes be managed on diet alone. That’s pretty amazing for just food to do!

If your pet has had a recent episode of vomiting or diarrhea you may have heard us recommend a bland diet with small frequent meals.

Most times we will be talking about a gastrointestinal diet. We carry a few different types: Gastro Moderate Calorie which is suitable for most pets, Gastrointestinal which has more calories and is suited to young animals or those with high metabolism, Gastro Low Fat which has less fat in it for animals with a sensitivity.

If it is a long term diet there are also treats made with the same intention of being easily digestible.

They told me to help my dog (or cat) lose weight, where do I even start?

A change in diet type, amount and schedule of feeding are the 3 most important factors in weight loss for your pet. Exercise is another important factor but it comes after nutrition. Check if you are feeding your pet to their lean weight (not their actual weight) and that their diet is appropriate for weight loss. Every diet will be slightly different in its nutritional content. A low calorie food can help with weight loss so they can eat enough to feel full (and get the right nutrients) without over-eating calories. We carry a variety of diets related to weight loss so there are many options!

In any dental procedure there is a potential of teeth needing extraction. The determination is made by the surgeon doing the dental procedure and they will consider the oral exam (done with dental probe to measure gumline depth and check for mobility), and radiographs (taken by our RVTs) together.

Some of these teeth you can easily see the level of disease that was present, there is a fair amount of tartar and deterioration visible to the naked eye after extraction. In the third photo there are some teeth that came out in one piece and others that needed to be split into each root piece to be removed.

Have you checked your pets mouth recently? The best way to prevent extractions is to do dental care at home (hopefully brushing teeth) and do routine dental cleanings before the level of periodontal disease is significantly advanced. Otherwise we recommend doing a dental procedure to alleviate any pain from diseased teeth and then maintain their new pearly whites at home long term.

Do you know how large tooth roots can be? Like an iceberg most of a tooth is hidden below the surface.

We use clear dental models to showcase both dog and cat dental anatomy. We also have a canine skull to show a real life example of what the jaw bone and teeth look like without any soft tissue.

There is a large variation in tooth size and shape.
