Every once in awhile we have a person who comes in who is simply petrified of horses! Susan was one of those few. We watched her face as her team was left with only one horse left to choose from, a hanoverian thoroughbred (a tall black horse) named Kokanee. Her eyes widened. Kari immediately read the body language and asked if she was ok.

“NO!” She sputtered! “I’m afraid of a dog, a cat, a hamster! Kari I’m afraid of a fly! I can’t do this!”. Kari facilitated the situation and it was decided that we would go get a horse that is a little smaller for her. In cam Jordy, our much smaller curly horse.

Even still, Susan kept her distance, only brushing with her arm fully extended to it’s greatest length. As the program went on, Susan kept the brush with her, almost as a safety blanket as she cautiously moved throughout the arena.

Susan and her partner were both planners and analytical thinkers. Once they got to the point they could get to an obstacle they would begin to plan. And plan. And plan some more. To the point where Jordy the horse was beginning to fall asleep. With that que we were able to step in and facilitate the situation. The group FINALLY decided they needed to take action. So they woke Jordy up, moved him to the obstacle and quickly proceeded to go right back to planning. What did Jordy do? He laid down. Right in the middle of the obstacle! The team laughed and laughed and when asked what Jordy was saying they said “That we need to make a bloody decision and take some action!!!”

Then something amazing happened. As Jordy laid down on the ground, Susan planted herself right beside him. It was stunning, overcoming her fear had made her feel strong and powerful and her teammate wept for her, knowing truly how much it meant to Susan in her life.

It is truly amazing, when we trust in the teaching of these majestic creatures, there is nothing they can’t teach us.

The growth and learning moments that we see in this program are absolutely amazing. We see so many special moments happen in our programs. Horses are truly a the best teachers.

After over 16 years of running these programs, there are still some moments that stick out.

A young girl named Priscilla. She came to our program so cut up on her arms and legs and with the attitude that she was tough and nothing was going to change that. Priscilla thought this program was stupid but little did she know; this program was going to be a turning point in her life.

About the 2nd or 3rd program, she started really connecting with a horse named, Pepper. He was one of the most special horses in his personality and we were so blessed that he came into our lives. He was a champion in cattle penning in Canada and his grandpa was #1 champion in Canada. Pepper wrecked his knee and could no longer compete but he still had so much purpose left. We only got to have him in our lives for 1 1/2 years but to this day we still believe that he actually came for Priscilla and not us per se. Usually in our programs we like to change up the teachers, the horses but this was not the case for Priscilla. From the moment she started to work with Pepper, her life began to change.

Pepper would noticeably use his muzzle on her and she would laugh and laugh. She absolutely loved it! Usually when a horse would do this, we would step in and help they kids to understand how to show a horse you need space. However, this was not the case for Priscilla. It was a different situation and we knew we needed to let it happen. From that moment on, they had a really strong connection.

On one of her visit to the programs she wrote in her journal, “How am I ever going to make it in this life without you, Kari, Carolyn and Pepper. You are all so important to me in my life and how I feel about myself.”

At the end of the program, Pepper hugged her like no other. He wrapped her up, literally bear hugged her. Nose to his stomach with Priscilla in his hug. It was something I had never seen before. I had to force back the tears because I knew it was her moment and I did not want to take anything away from that.

In all my years working, I have never seen another bear hug like I did that day. This program changed her forever. Even in her journal she had wrote “My word I picked today was (focus) because I am deciding what I want to do after treatment. I will admit I’m scared to leave you all have been positive for me. Thank you.” To see the way we are helping people overcome obstacles and find themselves is so rewarding

Ultra Equine - Horses Enhancing Lives is a proven, fun, educational Equine Assisted Learning program.

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a learner-based educational experience with horses. More specially, EAL is an effective approach to human development that encourages individual and team growth. Participants participate in objectively driven exercises where they find themselves learning valuable life skills in a fun and safe environment.

EAL empowers individuals to build the skills to change their lives. EAL has been proven to be effective, powerful, positive, creative as well as educational. This program is one of a kind - The Academy of Equine Assisted Learning's program emphasizes it's BuildingBlock TM curriculum of facilitating life skills exercises through positively reinforced interaction with horses. Exercises are developed to encourage self confidence through validated, hands-on experiences.

Our EAL programs have proven to be beneficial for individuals struggling with PTSD, anxiety, depression, autism, drug and/or alcohol dependency, emotional and behavioural disorders as well as trauma. Honestly, almost anyone can benefit from EAL.

We also work with organizations, therapists and clinicians as a team within a therapeutic plan to help people with self discovery, mindfulness, and skill development. EAL greatly benefits individuals who are rebuilding their lives after trauma.

Our programs are custom designed to maximize safety, learning potential, focuses on developing individual skills, all while working together as a group. These exercises are fun, interactive, and challenging.

Participants are taught how to change their perspective on social interaction while learning essential skills in the following areas: SAFETY, LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, and EMPATHY.

Teams work together to develop relationships, accept responsibility, learn accountability, overcome barriers to find change, while gaining courage to be creative and innovative.

Participants will also learn to recognize the value of mutual respect, trust and personal integrity all while having FUN!
