Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to thank every single person that has continued to reach out and check in to see if I'm back grooming.

Unfortunately, I have had to come to terms with the fact that for the foreseeable future I will not be returning to pet grooming and AJs Pet Spaw will be closed. I owe it to many of you holding out to give you final notice that I will not be returning.

I am very anxious and honestly heartbroken posting this as I've sat in limbo the past few months holding out hope I'd be able to return. I truly loved grooming, it was hardwork, but rewarding seeing your beautiful pets when I was finished. I miss all of the dogs terribly, for my own health and well-being going forward, I had to make this difficult decision.

A few clients have asked if I'm able to show them how I groom their dogs, and initially, I thought this would be possible. Unfortunately, though I'm still unable to complete a basic groom on my own dogs at this point, so I won't be able to. That and also, as much as grooming dogs seems simple to many and I can just "show you how," it is a skilled trade. I use extremely expensive, high-end tools, shampoos, and products. Some of the techniques I use to groom are learned over time, and from years of practice and patience, and my own personal skills in assessing how an animal is responding to their grooms. It cannot just be taught in one session.

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your support over the years. I feel so blessed to have gotten to know you all and your furry friends.

If anyone has found a groomer that is taking new clients and is good, if you're willing, please also share their name on this post! I also, unfortunately, know no other groomers that were like myself, or currently accepting clients.

If you'd like to continue supporting me going forward, please like and follow my homestead's page, Baker's Acres & Farmyard (I will share the link below). Unfortunately, being self-employed up until this point, I've made no income while in "limbo", leaving me financially struggling. It's tricky for me to find suitable employment around my children's and home life schedule, and I'm unable to do the repetitive work I used to with my hands. As you all know, my passion in life is caring for my animals. I am desperately trying to make an income from our little homestead and farm animals. I am setting up a small mobile petting zoo for parties and will be in attendance at the rodeo this year (if anyone would like to book a birthday party, or have my animals at an event going forward please contact me)! I would love to also open up our homestead to visitors in the near future for visits. I will be selling eggs, pasture-raised quail, small livestock, and products created on our farm. I'll be using that page to advertise what I have available once I get organized.

I'd also be willing to do pet sitting or care if anyone needs someone to drop in for home visits this summer!

Still, in order to continue moving forward with all of this or find other suitable employment, I need to close the grooming chapter of my life.

Thank you all again, you'll never know just how much I appreciate every single one of you! Give all your floofs a cuddle from me, and tell them I miss them.

Hey everyone,

This is my final update for a little while, some clients will receive a text and email also sharing this information. I'm sorry it's not a better update. To focus on my recovery I need to remove the added stress of pending grooming appointments and reduce trying to push myself to recover when it isn't as simple as I initially anticipated.

As some of you are aware I am currently facing a medical injury that is preventing me from operating in my much-loved grooming salon for the foreseeable future. All scheduled appointments going forward will be canceled due to not being able to predict when and if the salon will be back up and running. I am hoping with time, and medical care I will be able to return to grooming but I am unsure at this time when that will be.

Canceling all of the appointments is a decision I have not taken lightly. I am immensely grateful to have such amazing and loyal client committed to giving their pets the best care and trusting me to provide that all this time. However, I want to allow everyone to be able to find alternative arrangements while I am not operational. Also, if I do return, I feel I would not be returning at the capacity I did previously and that would mean schedule changes. I want to express my apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you and your pets.

I do not know any other groomers like myself I can recommend as I've never used them. There are some smaller groomers like myself if you do Google search that run home-based operations, or there are salons in Lethbridge. If you'd like to know about your dog's personal grooming preferences and quirks for any other groomers please let me know and I'd be happy to let you know.

If after this medical issue is resolved I can return to grooming, I will reach out to all of my regular clients before opening up to the general public. Until then, please know I am sending you and especially all your furry friends my thoughts and well wishes, I genuinely miss them all during this time.

Hello Everyone,

This is not the update I hoped to give but I am still unable to groom at the moment. My recovery is longer than I anticipated. I just need to give my wrist longer to rest in hopes it's just a temporary problem if not more tests can be done once I get to the 6-week point which is, unfortunately, another 3 weeks away. I'm unsure if this will be a long-term issue that may alter my ability to groom going forward.

Thank you for the messages of support and those of you who have been amazing at checking in 💗, I apologize if I'm not quick at responding. I'm very anxious about rescheduling appointments and giving new dates when I really I'm still unsure of what's going on myself and if I'll be able to return to full capacity right away, especially since I was almost fully booked until May before my injury.

The other option I have is to see if I'm able to bring in a groomer to work with me/train, but that will also take time to do if I decide to try, so please bear with me as I figure out the best plan as I try to recover.

So sorry for all the inconvenience for all those I am having to cancel. I appreciate each and every one of you and your lovely pets, I'm finding it very difficult being in limbo too.

Amazing clients & fur friends,

Unfortunately, at the end of last week I injured my wrist, I had hoped that it would improve over the weekend with rest, support, and medication, but sadly, it hasn't as quickly as I hoped.

Due to the nature of the injury I have no choice but to take time off grooming to allow it heal, If I stubbornly tried to groom right now I will put myself at risk for prolonged pain, or long term issues. I'm not sure if the "healing" time will be a matter of days or weeks at this moment.

I have turned off online booking for now, and will not be scheduling new appointments until I am back working and fit in the dogs I'm going to have to cancel in the coming days (weeks if need be).

I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. I completely understand if you need to find other accommodations for your pets grooming needs during this time frame.

For those with upcoming appointments, I will be reaching out. Believe me, I'm personally extremely frustrated by the unknown time frames of my recovery myself, and I hope for a sooner rather than later outcome.

Square, the scheduling program I use is currently experiencing a Nationwide outage so you will be unable to access my online schedule if you're currently trying to book. Hopefully it will be back up and running soon.

I feel for all the stores that use that system for payments, it appears it started failing at 1pm today!

I'm back in grooming this week and still catching up with messages and requests from when I was away last week. If I don't get back quickly I apologize, but I'm getting back to people in order of message received in between physically grooming.

I am still booked almost 8 weeks out, and have no wiggle/squish room at all in August for grooms unless I get a cancellation, I can still fit in nail trims though. I think 6 to 8 weeks will continue to be the wait time for appointments going forward. Please make sure to keep this in mind when booking your pets next appointment. It's not very often I get a photo of the cats that visit the Spaw as they are in and out so quickly (cats tend to only have about a 30-45 minute window of tolerance).

However, when the celebrity namesake "Catalie Portman" came in today for a brush out and nail trim, I had to sneak a photo mid groom 😻

Hello wonderful Furry friend Owners,

AJs Pet Spaw will be closed this summer from July 24th until July 31st, then August 28th until September 5th.

Effective July 1st, AJs Pet Spaw will also no longer be open on Saturdays. For now I need that extra time with my family and working on our property. I apologize to those clients this will impact. I will look at re-evaluating opening Saturday again at the end of fall.

The schedule is almost fully booked until September. I believe I only have one or two more spots in August, So please make sure you are booking your next appointment in advance. I have no extra time at the moment to "squeeze in" dogs unless I recieve a cancellation.

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to apologize to anyone that has contacted me in the last week or two I'm very behind with texts and calls as I've been physically grooming from 9am until 6-7pm most days and June is a little crazy with the end of school for the summer nearing for my 3 kids, so my evenings are also busy. I've been feeling a little burnout but I promise I will delegate some time this evening and tomorrow afternoon to get back to everyone!

I love this little lady! She was so terrified to walk in the door on her first visit, to now closing her eyes and enjoying her blueberry facials during her bath. She gives me kisses as I trim around her legs and toes and tries to scoot in as close as she can to me for cuddles the entire time I groom her.

I am so lucky to have so many wonderful dogs and amazing owners visit this salon ❤️

Good Evening!

For convenience and to try to reduce the need for tracking e-transfers, AJs Pet Spaw is now able to accept debit & credit card payments. The terminal is portable, so I'm able to bring it out with me at pick up time.

Cash will also continue to be accepted and preferred ☺️.

I am looking at bringing in a small amount of accessories such as collars, leashes, harnesses, home grooming supplies and pet toys which can be purchased alongside the grooming appointments in the near future, so having access to this terminal will help get that up and running soon!

🚨🚨🚨Warning: High amounts of SUCKING/BITING LICE in our area🚨🚨🚨

Hello everyone!

Just sounding the alarm on these pesty little creatures. I have had 3 different dogs from the Raymond area come in with sucking/bite lice this past month. Unfortunately, they are very small but can become a problem quickly as they easily pass between dogs especially in places like grooming salons, doggy day care and multi pet homes. They are more prevalent from farms but these dogs are in town residents. I have also noticed cases posted in Medicine Hat on a K9 first aid page, so I fear there maybe a high amount of them in Southern Alberta right now.

Please observe your pets if they seem overly itchy, uncomfortable, unlike themselves, or displaying signs of an unhealthy coat. Running a flea comb though your pets coats close to their skin will bring out these lice, or looking closely near there skin. The ones I have found have been around the neck/head/front legs of the dogs.

The advantage of using my salon is that I do not have dogs from multiple homes in my salon at the same time, so I am able to try and reduce the cross contamination between pets as much as possible. My combs and brushes are cleaned between pets and grooming blades are ultrasonically cleaned weekly and disinfected between grooms. The table is cleaned between each dog as is the tub and floor, However these tiny creatures can still cling in the smallest places and it's why they are often picked up in salons.

A discussion with your vet about the treatment/prevention of lice is always the best option. There are also over the counter options to treat lice at pet stores, or natural options.

If you own a dog or cat in the Raymond area, please take a moment to check over their coats and get them treatment, or better yet preventative treatment if you're able!

*Just to clarify these lice were NOT picked up from my salon, they came in from an external source. I have yet to have an owner come back with a concern of anything being picked up from my salon the whole time I've groomed, but I could never 100% guarantee it wouldn't happen due to the nature of the work. I can only promise I will do all I can to prevent it happening*

*Please ignore premium shampoo add on, I've decided to continue to include it in the groom price. The basic shampoo just doesn't leave the pets coats in a condition I'm happy to send them home in. So, again premium shampoos and conditioners are included in the regular groom price and I'll pick the best type for your pet at the time of their groom.

Jet (my protective border collie & reason I ask you all to please wait outside the gate when dropping off & picking up your dogs) would like to thank you all for continuing to be such amazing supportive clients during an extremely turbulent year. Grooming has always been more than just "work" for me as I really enjoy the company of all the pets I groom (Even the ones who don't enjoy my company as much 🤣). Your pets helped me through some difficult times, and I'm so grateful to know each and everyone one of them. I am excited to be able to start the year knowing I still get to see all their cute faces in 2023!

A little about Amy the Groomer!

I have had experience caring for animals of all kinds from a very young age. Anyone that knows me will attest that I enjoy the company of every single furry, fuzzy and feathered friend I meet. I spend the majority of my free time hanging out with my own animals which include dogs, cats, bearded dragons, chickens, ducks, a parrot, three monkeys (a.k.a my children) and many more...

I am a certified Animal Behaviourist, through Animal Behaviour College and have previously worked with many animals as a Veterinary Assistant.

I decided to pursue a career in pet grooming as it gives me the opportunity to continue to work with animals around my home life schedule. The best of both worlds for me!

Having my previous training and work experience really helps me read and understand the dogs/cats body language as I groom. I use positive reinforcement techniques, groom at the pace the pets are most comfortable with and give them breaks when they are needed.
