Slaughter checks play a crucial role in optimizing swine herd health. By examining animals post-slaughter, producers gain direct insights into the effectiveness of their health management strategies.

This process identifies prevalent health issues and aids in tailoring preventive measures. Insights from these evaluations are critical for enhancing overall herd well-being and operational efficiency.

Implementing regular slaughter checks ensures informed decision-making, ultimately leading to improved productivity and sustainability in swine production.

Early-life piglet scours, or neonatal diarrhea, significantly impacts swine production by affecting the health and growth of piglets. Addressing its root causesβ€”microbial infections, gut microbiota disruption, and environmental stressorsβ€”is essential for improving piglet welfare and farm productivity.

First step in controlling the disease is prevention by vaccinating the sows pre-farrow with commercial or autogenous vaccines or on-farm feedback strategies. This ensures optimal maternal antibodies in the colostrum. This should be followed by ensuring adequate colostrum intake by the piglets to boost their immunity.
A stringent cleaning and disinfection protocol and a good temperature and ventilation control will also reduce scouring events. Internal biosecurity between litters and targeted nutritional interventions, e.g. providing starch products and/or electrolytes, will limit the effects of the disease on farm.

Implementing these health and management strategies helps to reduce the incidence of scour, enhance piglet survival rates, and support healthier growth patterns. Early and proactive intervention is critical to managing this prevalent issue in the swine industry.

PRRS continues to be a cause of concern for the health and productivity of swine herds across Eastern Canada. Our group has tried and tested several strategies to prevent, control and eradicate this costly disease.

Prevention in some cases is possible with good biosecurity measures and a quarantine testing program. However, the PRRS virus is known to travel via aerosol and enter barns even if they have high biosecurity standards. Being quick to detect infection and to control the disease can limit losses.

Commonly used strategies for control and eradication include herd closure, controlled exposure to the virus, adapted management interventions and regular testing to follow-up on the infection dynamics in the barn.

Area-regional control programs exist and help us understand more about the epidemiology and dynamics in certain regions and help us set-up protocols to eradicate certain zones. With a control program and collaboration between veterinarians and producers, disease outbreaks can be successfully eradicated.

Benchmarking is crucial for optimizing production efficiency. Owners and managers can identify areas for improvement by assessing and comparing key performance indicators. This process ensures that operations in the sow, nursery, and finisher stages are streamlined and effective.

By focusing on performance gaps, managers can develop strategies to enhance productivity and health in swine herds. The goal is to minimize inefficiencies and enhance output without compromising the welfare of the animals, leading to a more sustainable and profitable operation.

Tools like PigFlow, PigKnows, and ProHog TrueAg support these efforts by providing real-time data tracking. Such resources empower managers to make informed decisions, ultimately optimizing performance.
