Did you know horses should have forage available 24 hrs a day to maintain gut health?

With the transition into winter going from pasture to hay, horse owners tend to make the change for their horses feeding in meals.

Meals can be useful in managing how much your horse is eating however horses should never go more than 4 hours in between feedings. Horses that get fed in meals more than 4 hours apart are prone to developing gastric ulcers. Ulcers can sometimes be difficult to identify as most show symptoms through their behaviour displaying discomfort around their girth line and flanks and even showing aggression.
Feeding smaller portion’s multiple times a day or using slow feeding hay nets are some effective ways to ensure your horse is getting the nutrients he/she needs while avoiding long periods of their stomachs being empty.

Through the moody forest we journey together 🌲🌙

This moody mare has been a challenge for me since day one. We have had many arguments, temper tantrums and just plain refusals. She’s stubborn but intelligent, accident prone yet strong. I tossed a saddle on her one day and went for it because I had to put her on the back burner while working on all my client horses. She confidently carried me though heavily treed crown land, hauled me safely through unknown territory in the dark, into steep creek beds and over piles of fallen logs all as a 3 year old with next to no training. With everything she is still the first to greet me at the gate every time!

As a weanling, Hazel tore open nearly her whole shoulder on pasture.
As a 2 year old she tried to make friends with a porcupine, 14 quills later I don’t believe she will do it again.
At 3 she cut a flap of muscle off her haunches.
She’s now 4 and has been on and off lame for the last 8 months for an unknown reason.

I’d love to hear about some of your most difficult but irreplaceable horses!

I believe the reason god made animals unable to speak is to teach us that actions speak louder than words ever could.

Most horses that come to me have some form of trust issue. The ability to communicate with another species without speech is a talent that cannot be taught from a book or a lesson, but from experience.

Did you know that many male horses need regular sheath cleaning 1 - 2 times a year?

Male horses naturally secrete Sm**ma as a form of lubricant. When retracted, the Sm**ma is contained within the sheath. Therefore, the inside of the sheath will also be coated in Sm**ma. Over time, the accumulation can produce what’s called a “bean” and cause pain and obstruct the flow of urine.

• How do I know when my horse needs his sheath cleaned?

Some horses show their discomfort by scratching their tails, trying to scratch their sheath on whatever is convenient, not dropping to urinate or straining to urinate.

Let’s not forget about the mares! Though mares don’t produce Sm**ma between their teats, they do accumulate dirt, sweat and dead skin cells. Mares can also show their discomfort with scratching and can often cause self trauma trying to scratch their utter.

Skye Spirit Horsemanship offers sheath and utter cleaning services in the Red Deer and Red Deer County area. Will travel for multiple horses.
