We had an interesting case the other day, this gentle giant was missing an upper incisor.

With a missing incisor, this horses ability to eat grass will be affected, but with regular maintenance he will be able to effectively eat and keep weight on!

Another reason why it’s 𝐒𝐎 important to get your horses teeth checked regularly.

This poor guy has given his rider no trouble at all, even with teeth so sharp they’ve been causing ulcerations on the inside of his cheeks.

Situations like this can cause anything from behavioural issues to ulceration in the mouth as seen below 👇

We have been treating a number of ponies and miniature breeds recently, so thought we would share an interesting case each week in August
Did you know that because of the size of their heads and comparatively large size of their teeth, ponies and miniature breeds are prone to a number of dental conditions, such as overcrowding and tooth root infections?
Check out this skull from a young miniature pony with some of the outer bone removed, showing the size of the teeth compared to the size of the head.

This big guy was having some trouble to the right that was atypical from his normal self.

Thinking something was up in his mouth, his incredible owners called Layne to come and see if there was something she could do.

Low and behold a wolf tooth was present and was causing a ton of pain when touched by the bit.

We are pleased to hear that after removal this great horse is back to training and competing!

𝘖𝘏 𝘉𝘖𝘠! Was this guy ever excited to get his teeth done.

Along with a wave in the incisors, this gelding has a 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙮 tooth.

This is an extra tooth that may or may not cause problems depending on its placement in the mouth! Another great reason to get your horses to the dentist regularly.
