Spending Remembrance Day with Bruno, working on his “Stay” command on day one of his Board and train.
A solid stay command is essential to your dogs safety, and it practices great impulse control.
Start really close to your dog and have them stay and release them after a short moment then reward. You will now start to build up distance and duration, only increasing the difficulty when your dog successfully holds the stay until released a minimum of 9/10 times.
Thanks for reading, have a great weekend. 😊✌🏻

The place cue, is one of my favourite cues to teach a dog of any age.
Start by luring them into the chosen “Place” and click or say yes when all four paws are in place and reward immediately.
Now begin to fade the luring motion into a hand signal, and pair it with the word “Place” then click and reward each time.
Now ask your dog to “Place” then give them your release cue “Break” or what ever word you use. Then reward heavily for holding the position until released.
Now you can begin adding the three Ds listed below.
Duration - the amount of time your dog can hold the place cue. Build this up slowly ensuring your dog can be successful.
Distance- the distance you can be away from your dog while they still hold the position.
Distractions- slowly adding in distractions (People, other dogs, birds etc) while the dog remains in position.

A reliable “Heel” is a skill that takes takes time to master, so best to get started early! This is my 3 month old boxer puppy Lincoln! 💚
🐾 Begin teaching this cue by putting a few treats or kibble in your closed hand, present it to your dog and encourage them to follow your hand as you move, occasionally giving them one. This is referred to as luring.
🐾 Now lure your dog around and to the side of you in a circular motion, then into a sit. When they get into the “heel position” reward them with a few treats from your hand.
🐾 Next you will begin to add movement by takin a couple steps luring the dog to follow you, and then into a sit when you stop moving. Now add the cue word “heel” and repeat this step a few times.
🐾 Next you will begin go fade the luring motion and rely on the cue “heel”. Keep adding distance until your dog can reliably walk in a heel for a reasonable portion of your walks. When you get good at this, you can use it to keep your dog focused on you in distracting environments. Keep in mind each dog is different, and the time they are able to preform this will vary.
🐾 Lastly you will begin practicing this in an environment with more distraction. But always work within your dogs capabilities and give them breaks. It is unreasonable to expect a dog to walk in a perfect heel the entire walk.

A muzzle is a great tool! But when you reach the point where you are comfortable enough removing it.. That's an amazing day!
I've had three sessions with Liam the merema x and we are making HUGE progress. Managing a dog with a bite history can be tricky and cause massive anxiety for owners.
If you are struggling to manage your fearful/ aggressive/ reactive dog, keep in mind you need to take it slow and work within your dog's capability. Enlist the help of a professional who you trust, that understands your dog's history and the goals you have for them.
Thanks for reading have a great Sunday! 🐾✌️

I love working with all breeds!! But when I have a client with a boxer it is an extra special day!!
Always remember to give your dog a break to sniff and explore when training heel or lose leash walking.
It is unrealistic to expect a dog to walk in a perfect heel for long periods of time. Especially in the beginning
Start slow and keep it fun! 🐾🐕🐕🦺

The touch cue!! Teach your dog to gently touch their nose to your hand.
This trick is useful for a variety of reasons. For example teaching a mouthy, nipping puppy that “touch” gently is the more rewarding choice, could be a great way to redirect the problem.
Another example, your dog is digging in the garden. You give the “touch” cue and present your hand, the dog stops digging to come “touch”
This can also be very effective in strengthening your dogs recall or giving reactive dogs an alternative behaviour to barking at passing dogs, bikes or people.
Here is how to get started ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Step 1. Present your flat hand. Many dogs will immediately come sniff your hand/ investigate what you are doing. When their nose touches your hand, mark the behaviour with a click or yes, then reward with a treat from the opposite hand.
Step 2. After repeating step 1 a few times you can now present your and say the cue word “touch” when your dog touches your hand, reward and praise heavily and repeat!!
Step 3. Once your dog is understanding the cue word you can begin to increase the difficulty by adding distance, and low level distractions. ( do this slowly to ensure you are successful)
Step 4. Now that your dog has learned this cue and practiced it in a variety of situations. You can begin adding it in into your daily life whenever you see the need …or just for fun!!
I hope you found this fun and helpful. If you want to learn more about teaching this cue comment or DM for more. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Does your dog crowd the door or need to learn personal space? Teaching your dog to back up on cue can not only prevent that, but it is a great exercise for healthy hips and knees!!
As with all behaviours begin by rewarding the small steps towards success, improve it to a level you are happy with, then begin incorporating it into your daily life.
I hope you found this helpful, thanks for watching and have a great #maylongweekend 🐾🎾✌️

Will your dog come back to you when called?
Recall around distractions can be very difficult for some dogs. This means you need to make this cue extremely rewarding and be sure you do not make it to difficult to early. Add distractions slowly, only increasing the difficulty when you are successful a minimum of 9/10 attempts. 🥇🐾
A long line will help you train recall safely and set your dog up for success! 🐕🦺🐾
Note: Avoid having your dog in a “Stay” when training recall. This is unrealistic for real life and can encourage your dog to break the “Stay” position in anticipation of being recalled.

Can your dog leave something alone when you tell them?
The “leave it” cue is essential for any pet dog. It will help you ensure your dog doesn’t eat something off the side walk or counter, use an inappropriate item as a toy or leave the spilled bottle of medication on the kitchen floor that sounded suspiciously like kibble!! 🐾🐶

How long can your dog hold a “stay” for? ✋🏻
A solid stay or wait cue is essential to maintain control of your dog and keep them safe. It is also great for building impulse control ( checkout my last reel for some ways to exercise impulse control)
Start really close to your dog and have them stay and release them after a short moment then reward. You will now start to build up distance and duration, only increasing the difficulty when your dog successfully holds the stay until released a minimum of 9/10 times.

The importance of teaching your dog impulse control, can not be over stated! This is a life saving skill and makes life as a dog owner much less stressful.
If your dog understands the release cue (ex. Sit or down until you release them) These are three exercises you should practice with your dog everyday.
1. Wait until released at all door ways! This avoids a dog running out the door into traffic or to go see another dog across the road. Ask them to wait then calmly release them when you are ready.
2. Have them wait while you place a toy somewhere. Have them hold the position until released. Always release the dog before they decide to break the position on their own, if they do break the position, reset and shorten the duration.
3. Wait until released at all meal times! This seems simple but is extremely useful in building impulse control . This teaches your dog that waiting calmly for your release cue is the quickest way to get what they want.
Thanks for listening, have a great Easter 🐣 🐰

When you reach the point in your training process where you are ready to faze out food rewards and you have a relatively playful dog you can use a toy your dog finds high value. (Tennis balls or tug toys work great ) begin to use it as the reward system in your training, but be sure it only comes out when YOU are engaging with your dog. Allowing free access to the toy devalues it over time and it will no longer be a useful training tool. Some other powerful life rewards could be freedom to run off leash, access to an area or to meet a person. Just always be sure not to replace food rewards with life rewards to early in training to avoid backslides. 🐾🎾 🦴
