The Little Nose that Knows

The Little Nose that Knows The Little Nose that Knows specializes in Scent Detection training for pets and sport competition. Primary focus is SDDA (Sporting Detection Dog Assoc).

The Little Nose is focuses on training scent detection to ANY dog, we promote the sport as a game the old, young, shy or rambunctious dog can play. It makes a great game for cold winter days and we also promote the sport competition, primarily SDDA (Sporting Detection Dog Association) guidelines with expansion into UKC, SDS, C-WAGS. And we are learning and growing all the time, no type of sport de

tection is off limits. In partnership with other hobbyist dog sport lovers we also offer Rally Obedience (Rally O), drop in practices, seminars and host trials. We are adding to our educational repertoire all the time, so you never know what we will have for you next! We strive to promote a positive atmosphere for all dogs and handlers/owners who cross our path. We hope to amplify interest in dog sports in the community. My education in Scent Detection is by no means complete, I believe every instance offers something new and we are always growing. Some of my training includes: Andrew Ramsey Nosework method, mentoring workshops with multiple SDDA judges, and am in the process of completing Gold Level Fenzi dog NW training. Every year I choose to participate in educational opportunities so I always have something new to offer my students. Above all, we have fun at Little Nose and our smiles show it. :)

Another appreciation post? HECK YES!

The Little Nose that Knows is pleased to have the ongoing, unwavering support of the fabulous and fierce Sam, of Canine Coaching. We are fortunate to have Sam's support for every trial, behind the scenes she and I work on the paper work and pre-planning details together, as well as I am lucky to call her my personal assistant at most trials - this woman keeps me on track! I can trust her to pick up where I left off in an instant, to act as another set of eyes on site and to jump in and handle any task in an instant. Canine Coaching also donates prize items regularly to our events ensuring we have toys and cookies galore on hand.

Sam has been helping at our trials and co-hosting with me since 2016, as well as now hosting her own events. We ate always avid supporters of their events too. Check out their fall class schedule just posted and sure to fill fast!

LIttle Nose is grateful and thankful for every volunteer, helper, and supporter we have for our events, and today, we shout out to Sam and Canine Coaching for all they do for and with us ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’œ

Little Nose Trial Sponsor Shout Out!
This sponsor is also a near and dear friend, who has been on the scent journey with us since our early days.

Alberta Dogsport Supplies is an annual sponsor of our events donating scent kits, straws, oils, vials and vessels of all kinds! We frequently order these items from them as well for ourselves and our students and thanks to them being local we can often save on shipping by meeting up for pick up.

Make sure to contact them for all your scent detection supplies, you won't be sorry! And check out their page to see the wide variety of supplies they carry. Our personal favorites are camo tins, they blend in so well you might just need your scent detection partner to help you find the vessel you hid!

Ever noticed those slits at the sides of a dogโ€™s nose? Why do dogs have them?

Once again, nature proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dogโ€™s nostrils doesnโ€™t get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but letโ€™s use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: What we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.
