𝟱 𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗞𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘 𝗗𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗩𝗘 🥵

1. Ensure access to plenty of shade and water.

2. Check the pavement before you walk your dog. If it's too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for your dog.

3. Limit outdoor exercise.

4. Be especially careful with short-nosed dogs. They can't pant as efficiently, which means they can't cool down as efficiently.

5. Watch for signs of heat stroke - excessive panting or drooling, rapid heart rate, or red gums. If your suspect your pup has heat stroke, get them inside right away and offer plenty of cool water. consider covering them with cool towels or running a cool bath for them.

𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗦!!!

𝟭. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱. Even if it's a crappy recall, reward it anyways, and then your dog will be more likely to come a little quicker the next time. Also take note of the context of this recall (environment, level of distraction), and practice a bit more in an easier context next time.

𝟮. 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 (𝗙𝗶𝗱𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲! 𝗙𝗶𝗱𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲! 𝗙𝗶𝗱𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲! 𝗙𝗶𝗱𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄!) All you are doing is teaching your dog that he doesn't need to come until he hears his name 50 times!! Once again, take note of the context and make it a little easier next time. Build the recall cue up gradually to more distracting situations.

𝟯. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁. Practice your recall so that Fido will come to you 9/10 times! That way Fido come actually means Fido come. So if you are at the dog park and your dog is in the middle of the best play of his life, don't call him unless you are 99% sure he will come. Otherwise you just devalue the meaning of the your recall cue.

𝟰. 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀. Unless you want to always have that bag of treats on you to shake and get your dogs attention, don't fall into this trap. Instead make your recall cue just as effective as the sound of that treat bag crinkling. Think about why that works every time. Your dog knows every single time they hear that bag, a treat actually follows. So what if every single time they heard "Fido come" a treat also followed. It would be just as effective!!!
