We asked Dr Jessica to tell us about a memorable interesting case she has had. Lucky for us she even had pictures!

“ about 6 years ago I responded to a call with a horse with a stick in its leg. I asked them to haul it into clinic and they responded “ the stick is too big and won’t fit in trailer”. It was -30 outside and when I got there the horse had stuck a board through its leg and had the board behind its other front leg and couldn’t move. With the assistance of a chain saw we trimmed the board so we could pull it out. We got the horse to the barn where we cleaned it, placed a drain and sutured it. It was a happy ending as the horse made a full recovery and went back to work later that spring “ ~Dr Jess

Meet the staff update! (Which is long over due) We were very happy to welcome Dr. Wu back to our team early last year after she spent some time completing further education in Veterinary Acupuncture!

Dr. Jessica Wu grew up in Taiwan and completed her DVM degree at the National Taiwan University in 2018 and came to Canada in 2019. Her love for animals started at a very young age, growing up she owned different kinds of pets including dogs and cats. In addition to conventional medicine, she has a passion for integrative/alternative treatments and has completed training programs in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in both Taiwan and the US. She enjoys communicating and understandinging the needs of each pet and family, and figuring out a care plan that suites them. Jessica and her husband Ray currently own 4 dogs and 6 horses. Besides being a small animal vet, she also enjoys riding her horses and training in Dressage.

We hate running late just as much as you, please help us out by ensuring you let us know if you need to cancel or make changes to your appointment. Our staff will be able to help you reschedule if you need to add additional animals. With the sever shortage of veterinarians in Alberta we try our best to have all our patients seen in a timely manner this means our schedule is full and we cannot always accommodate changes to your appointments without causing the rest of the appointments for the day to be late.

08/02/2022

Dr Jessica will have limited availability to see patients up in Grande Prairie at Evergreen Park next week on Monday and Tuesday (Aug 8 and 9). Let us know if you want to be added to list. Will be scheduling and calling everyone on Thursday :)

Regular dental care is key to keeping our equine friends performing at their best! Be sure to watch carefully for signs your horse might need a dental check up.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. While horses don’t "exactly" qualify as pets, this is still a good opportunity to talk about the importance of oral health for our equine friends.

Equine dentistry is not just about “floating” teeth. Dentistry is a veterinary discipline that, besides treating the mouth and teeth, also includes the associated structures of the head – for instance the sinuses – and the effect of dental diseases on the health of the rest of the body. That is why all horses should have a veterinarian perform an oral and dental examination at least annually (or more frequently based on the needs of the individual horse.)

Remember: just because your horse is not showing any obvious symptoms of dental disease, it does not automatically mean that all is well with your animal's oral health. Horses simply adapt to their discomfort and most horses with dental problems will show no noticeable signs at all, until the disease is a serious source of pain and infection that can affect the animal’s overall health.

Contact your horse doctor today to discuss a dental examination for your equine friend, and prevent more painful and costly problems later!

Happy first day of Fall! 🍂🍁🌧💨

This time of the year is ideal to prepare your horse and your property for the arrival of winter. Your veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season: be sure to discuss vaccination and dewormers, but also use this opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise program for your horse, and at what temperature turnout sheets and blankets might be a good idea. Your horse doctor can help you and your equine friend ease into the colder season without a hitch!
