Another foundations class graduated!
We had some fun in class today, adding some jumps, obstacles and climbs before arriving at scent!
The options are endless for how you can have your dog find scent and reward, get creative! As long as the game ends with odor and a payout there really is no wrong way when teaching odor pays.
Foundations is all about a fun learning process always.
Thanks Roo, Smokey, and Luna for an awesome set of Foundations!
Reinforce, reward, repeat.
Something we discuss in our foundations and search class is the importance of rewarding that odor. You cannot over reward it. Whether it be a seasoned dog or a beginner make that odor count for more than 1 cookie!
Here, my beginner dog Monte found his odor cone, then worked the cone until he sources the strongest point (where the qtip is) and then tells me he found it. Then he gets rewarded SEVEN times for returning to the odor. Whether it be containers, interiors or exteriors he gets ample rewards for finding and returning to odor in practice.
Laying the foundation that odor pays in a multitude of cookies is what I believe is the most important starting piece of nosework. In fact my high level dogs still get ample rewards at odor in practicing drills.
